November 7, 2018

Obituary

With love, pride, and deep sadness, we announce the loss of our beloved mother, Joan I. Higgins, who died November 7, 2018 following a rich and happy life. Joan passed away peacefully, surrounded by her three children, at Agnes Pratt Nursing Home in St. John’s.

Joan is predeceased by her husband, Brian E. Higgins; her parents, Anthony R. Evans and Emmie E. (Brushett); her brother Robert L. Evans and sister-in-law Madeline M. (O’Mara); and her special friend, Frank B. Rossiter. Leaving to mourn are Joan’s children James Higgins (Lisa), Brian Higgins, and Kathryn Richards; her grandchildren Robert Richards, Lauryn Richards and Samantha Higgins; and great grandchild Iris Richards. Joan will also be remembered by her nephew A. Robert Evans (Linda), extended family on both sides of the Higgins and Evans families, and a warm circle of many, many friends and acquaintances over the years.

Joan was born to Newfoundland parents in St. John, NB and grew up a proud Newfoundlander in St. John’s from early childhood. Joan studied nursing at the General Hospital and became a Registered Nurse during the war. She served the nursing community in many capacities over her thirty plus year career, from the operating room to administration. When she retired, Joan was an administrative supervisor at the former Grace General Hospital.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to the dedicated medical and nursing staff at Agnes Pratt and, in particular, the AP Stella Burry Place team, for their unwavering, thoughtful and attentive care.

Visitation will take place at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, Saturday, November 10, 2018, from 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM. A funeral mass will be held at St. Pius X Church, Smithville Crescent, on Tuesday, November 13, 2018 at 9:30 AM. The family will hold private interment at a later date. Flowers gratefully accepted; or, donations may be made in Joan’s memory to The Agnes Pratt Home Foundation.

Kathy, Jim and Lisa, Brian and families,
I was saddened to learn of your lovely mother’s passing. Please know you’re in my thoughts and prayers at this sad time.
Blessings to you all,
Lisa

On behalf of the General Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Association, we wish to express to the family of Mrs. Higgins our sincere sympathy at her recent passing. I interviewed her on her career in nursing and it was evident that she was committed to her patients and loved what she did. She will be remembered in the roll call at our annual Alumni dinner and her name will be recorded in the Memorial Book for deceased graduates. Sincerely, Jeanette Walsh, for Robert Meadus, President, General Hospital School of Nursing

Jim and family, I am so sorry for your loss. She was a wonderful woman and loved you dearly. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

I did not know Joan but she and my father, Max Evans, were first cousins, their fathers being brothers. Joan is the last surviving member of the Evans family in her and preceeding generations. There must be great satisfaction in a life lived long and well. I extend my condolences to her family. Flo Evans (St. John’s NL)

To The Higgins Family;

I’m so sorry to hear of your mothers passing. I met Mrs. Higgins about 25 years ago while doing her manicure. In that period of time, I grew quite fond of her. I enjoyed her stories of her nursing career and most of all her family! Although a private woman, she was a proud mother. Mrs. Higgins was such a thoughtful lady, more often than not during our home visits, she would send me off with a treat! Could have been a box of biscuits or a piece of fruit but always in a paper bag!

It saddens me greatly that I wasn’t able to attend visitation today , but please know my condolences are with you all! Mrs. Higgins will be greatly missed.

Thinking of you,
Pamela Day

I’m so sad to hear of Mrs. Higgins passing . She was a wonderful customer of ours at Shoppers Drug Mart in Churchill Sq for years . She always dressed lovely and had a smile for us in the cosmetic dept. I met her a few years after I left Shoppers for a career in Real Estate and we shared a cup of tea and a chat together for over an hour! It was lovely and one of the special memories I have of her.
God bless you all , she loved her family and spoke about you many times over the years . We became friends through retail !! She always asked about my mom and son as I always received updates about her family .
She left a mark in the heart of this lady always .
RIP Mrs. Higgins , fly high with the angels .

Heartfelt sympathies to Joans family. We talked on the phone several times Kathy. I really had a soft spot for her. She will be missed by all of us at the home! Melissa (pca)
