Obituary

Passed away peacefully at St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital on November 5, 2020 at the age of 94.  Predeceased by her parents William and Mary Halliday, husbands Robert Clarke and Captain Jack Wood, brothers John (Florence), Paul, and William (Madonna), sister Doris Clarke (Victor), sister-in-law Marie, brother-in-law Charlie Masterton.  Left with fond and loving memories are her son John Clarke (Elaine), grandson Andrew Clarke (Jennifer) in Halifax, great-grandsons James and Ben Clarke in Halifax, stepdaughter Helen Wood in Mississauga, stepsons Andrew Wood (Christina) in Toronto and William Wood in Chicopee, MA, sister-in-law Ella Masterton in Dundee, Scotland, brother Clifton Halliday, sister-in-law Ruth Halliday.  Betty will also be remembered by a large circle of nieces, nephews and friends, St. David’s Church Quilter’s Guild, the Arts and Culture Library Knitting Group, and her ladies’ swimming circle.  The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at St. Clare’s 7 East for their care and attention.  Following Betty’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a private family interment will be held on Saturday, November 14th at 2:00 p.m. at Mount Pleasant Cemetery. Donation’s may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

“If there are no flower gardens in heaven, there will be plenty of them there now.”

We have Many fond memories of Betty as we were longtime customers of Halliday”s Store. Always a smile .

To the Halliday family, I am so sad to hear of Bettys passing. My heartfelt condolences go out to you all at this time.

Sad to hear of Betty’s passing, but so glad that she died so peacefully and with her much loved family.
Thank you, John and Elaine, for your faithful care of her, and for the love that you wrapped her in, as she did you., I wonder if she finished the green socks she was knitting ! I expect she and Marjorie are catching up even now on the last few months ….and busy organizing a knitting group in heaven.
May you be comforted. by a sense of her kind presence still near you, and by the confidence that she is safe with God.

I am so sorry to hear of Betty’s passing., my condolences go out to John, Elaine and family. I will miss greatly our phone calls, she was on my list of people to call and check on and I was on her list. I enjoyed hearing her stories of growing up on Nagles Hill and of her memories of the Hodders. She was my last connection to her connection with my family. I will miss her wit, we had some great laughs.. May she rest in peace, she will always be in my heart.

We have known Betty since the store on Plymouth Road. days. She was a lovely person and always made our order (especially the ones forTopsail) were boxed. She deserved her retirement and the active life she enjoyed. From all our family we send our condolences to all Betty’s family.

So sorry to hear of Aunt Bet’s passing. Have nice memories of knitting at Nanny Halliday’s with her and Aunt Doss. Guess they are both gonna break out the needles, have a cuppa tea and catch up. It was just last year I saw Aunt Bet at the Quidi Vidi Plantation when she was doing a chat about Knitting. Condolences to Johnny, Elaine, Andrew and Family.

I went swimming with her for several years and feel so honoured to have known her. She had a great sense of humour, a great conversationalist and was a wonderful lady..

John, I have so many happy memories of growing up on Nagle’s Hill and think your mother must have had the patience of a saint when I remember some of the antics that we got up to. May you find peace in knowing so many people had great memories of your loved one, she was a very wise, stern but humorous woman , a great business woman, I remember as a child going into Hallidays market and buying sausages , liver , chicken , and whatever Dad would send us for , the store had everything from a needle to an anchor, lots of laughter was there as well. She is in heaven with all the angels now , God bless her.
