Our family had recently met Cal as he was in the room with our father at St. Clare’s. We rested easy at night knowing Cal was taking care and looking out for Dad. He would make sure to buzz the nurses if Dad needed help. He was great company to Dad and they had good conversation. When we went there in the morning Cal would let us know how Dad’s night was. Cal said our family was part of his support system, however, in our eyes he was ours. We are very saddened by Cal’s passing. Prayers to his family and friends. Rest in Peace Cal.

Good teachers teach. Great teachers inspire. And, you sir, were nothing less than great.
From meeting you when I started school at 4 to the time I left at 17, you inspired my love of reading and learning and a never ending quest for knowledge. , And I thank you for everything you did for me and my classmates/friends. You were indeed the very best of the best. You will be missed immeasurably.
RIP Mr. Smith (Cal) – it is well deserved.

A great teacher who made high school a better place for so many people. RIP Mr. Smith ( Cal ) .

I was fortunate enough to accompany Mr Smith and a group of students on a student exchange trip to Saskatchewan as a chaperone. During the week we were gone it was amazing to see him connect to those students and see how much he genuinely cared about them.
He was a dedicated teacher and a good man who will be fondly remembered.

My sincere condolences to Mr. Smith’s family and friends. I was very sad to hear the news of his passing. I have wonderful and fond memories of him at St. Hilda’s and Jacques Fontaine High School. As a teacher, he was encouraging, helpful and challenged us to do our best. He made English class so much fun with his approach to listening to music, drama or just reading a book and making the characters come alive. His care and kindness went beyond the classroom. I am grateful to the kindness he showed me and my family. He has left a wonderful legacy.

Another sheep of our St. Mark’s Saturday Family has left us. Cal was always there for a joke, laugh and smile. We will miss him for sure but Cal is reunited with Bob, the love of his life. I hope that God himself will grant you both your one wish, I pray with all my heart that a higher power than those here will give you both united blessing. ????????

I was shocked and saddened to hear of Mr. Smith’s passing. He was such a fabulous teacher who genuinely cared about all of his students. Although I hadn’t seen him in many years, we did reconnect through social media a number of years ago and it seems his caring ways and involvement in the community certainly didn’t end when he retired from teaching. RIP Mr. Smith. My sincere condolences to all of his family and friends.

Gonna miss you buddy, but we’ll see you again for sure. I’ll bring the beer, you bring the Vienna Sausages!

I am so shocked and sad to hear of Mr. Smith’s passing. He was a wonderful man and a tremendous teacher both inside and outside the classroom. Not only was he an amazing writer, he was also kind, devoted and funny. He had a special way of connecting with his students. I was lucky enough to experience all of that over and over again as we travelled around the Burin Peninsula and around the province for public speaking competitions and Drama Festivals when I was a student at Jacques Fontaine. He had a big impact on my life. He gave me the tools I needed to pursue my current career path. I will never forget him and he will always have a special place in my heart. Sincere condolences to Mr. Smith’s family and friends…Sherry Banfield

Although decades have passed since we sat in Mr. Smith’s classes, that feeling we had when he greeted us back then has not faded from our collective memories, whether it was in his classroom, in the halls, or on drama festival trips. The warm and comforting environment Mr. Smith created for us remains forever glowing in our hearts in extremely valuable ways. Students tend to hold on to the best memories of our childhood and Mr. Smith was most certainly a big part of our best memories. RIP, Sir.
