Cecil William Keats Roebothan

July 4, 1930 to March 10, 2019

Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather and great grandfather on Sunday March 10th, 2019 at the age of 88 years.  Predeceased by his parents Ina (Keats) and Ernest Roebothan and sister Lorna (Heber)Walters.  Leaving to mourn his loving wife of 66 years, Annie (Hatcher); sons: Glen (Barbara), Dean (Ann) and Wayne (Michaela); grandchildren: Katie (Trevor), Julia (Blago), Stephen (Lesley), Mark (Aimee), Vanessa (Mike) and Paul; five great-grandchildren; sisters: Winnie (Gilbert Wells – deceased) Roebothan and June (Walter) Butler; brother-in-law Canon Reuben (Ruth) Hatcher.  Born and raised in Joe Batt’s Arm, he was an avid salmon fisherman, rabbit hunter and all-around outdoors man. But his true passion was spending time with family and friends. He was a proud Newfoundlander who enjoyed travelling the province, reading and telling stories about rural and outport Newfoundland and Labrador.  He dedicated his professional life to advance education for the benefit of all children for generations to come and was a strong advocate for the province’s non-denominational education system.

To quote a close friend “Cec was one of our most thoughtful and highly respected educational leaders.  Through his career, he believed in the importance of providing equal opportunity for all our children, whether they lived in the smallest community of the Province or the largest.  He left an indelible mark, touching and enriching the lives of so many people.   I was truly honoured to have worked closely with him and shall always miss his wisdom and his fellowship.”

Resting at Carnell’s funeral Home 329 Freshwater Road on Tuesday March 12th, from 2:00 to 9:00.  Funeral service to take place on Wednesday March 13th, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. from St. Augustine’s Anglican Church, Westerland Road. Inurnment to follow at the Columbarium at the Anglican Cemetery, Kenmount Road.

Dear Grandma Annie, Glenn, Dean, Wayne and families: Rob and I read today with great sadness of Mr. Roebothan’s death. Meeting him first as a teenager in a home where all were welcome, I then came to know him as a Deputy Minister of knowledge and integrity, and finally as a treasured neighbour and grandfather on Glasgow Place. I last spoke with him while walking around Kent’s Pond. He seemed ageless. I will always picture his tall, rangy form striding over the landscape he loved. Our love to all, Janet Miller Pitt, Robert Pitt and family.
