Donna Elaine Brenton

August 26, 1956 to January 28, 2020

Obituary

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Donna Elaine Brenton, on January 28, 2020 at the age of 63.  Left with loving memories are her husband, Paul Greene, her sister and brother-in- law Kathleen Brenton and Randy Martin; her brothers and sisters-in- law David and Anne; Gary and Barbara Ann; Kevin and Bernice; Robert and Violet; Gerry and Leona; and sister-in-law Patricia Greene. Also leaving to mourn are her eleven nieces and nephews; their spouses and children; plus a large circle of loving friends.

Donna was well known in the sports community in St. John’s.  She was an all-star basketball player for Memorial University and the city league of St. John’s.  Her contribution to basketball in this province was recognized in 2015 when she was inducted to the NL Basketball Hall of Fame.  Donna was also recognized as one of the premier Women’s Golfers in Newfoundland.  She won many tournaments in her 30 plus years as a member of Bally Haly and she was the proud winner of the Club Championship in 2001.  Donna also proudly represented Newfoundland on the Provincial Ladies Amateur Team at the National Ladies Amateur Tournament in 1998. Donna was an avid curler, and played many sports throughout her life. Donna was also known as a great contributor to Bally Haly in her volunteer efforts in many club tournaments, especially for her role in the annual Women’s Invitational Golf Tournament.

Perhaps the greatest contribution to sport in Newfoundland and Labrador comes as a result of her 30 years as Physical Education Teacher at Prince of Wales Collegiate.  Donna aspired to develop a love of sport in all of her students and to encourage them to be the best athlete they could be. She coached and mentored many elite athletes in her time, but she was equally as proud of those students who grew to love an active and healthy lifestyle from their classes with her.

Donna will always be remembered for her gentle spirit, her kindness to and encouragement of others, and her love of family and friends. If there is a golf course in heaven, be expecting her and expect her to teach you a thing or two.

The family would like to thank Dr. Patti Power and the team of doctors and oncology staff; especially Cathy Cahill, oncology nurse, for always being there when needed.

Family will receive visitors at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, on Thursday, January 30 from 11 a.m. – 9 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held from St. Teresa’s Parish on Friday, January 31 at 9:30 a.m.

Flowers gratefully accepted or donations may be made in Donna’s memory to the “In This Together” campaign at the H. Bliss Murphy Centre.

In life we loved you dearly,

In death we love you still,

In our hearts you build a place,

No one will ever fill.

The Family of Donna Brenton

After being away this winter just hearing of Donna’s passing. I met Donna through golf playing in a tournament at Bally Haly. Being a novice golfer, I ended up in the final group with Donna. I was nervous and Donna knew. She encouraged me, helped me and I will never forget her kindness. A decent, beautiful human. Godspeed Donna and my sincere condolences.

Paul, Kathleen and family,
My condolences on Donna’s recent death. I have so many memories of D from back in the 70’s and 80’s. I can see her huffing along the BB court as a Dewey’s Tiger. She had been a very forgiving room-mate to K . M . and my antics on Rennies Mill Rd., a patient cosmetologist when I needed one and a wonderful role model on the possibilities of moderation.
Paul, D became so much more through the love and constancy of your partnership and I enjoyed being there in the early days to witness the joy you shared.
Kathleen, D was so proud of you and obviously loved you beyond measure.
The world will be a lesser place without D who was the consummate teacher leading as much from what she did not say as by what she did.
May she be golfing and grinning in her after life. Jo

“Sweep! Sweep! Don’t dust it – sweep it!
God bless.

Dear Kathleen, Michelle and are so sorry to learn of your sister’s passing. May your pleasant memories help carry you in your time of grief. Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. Sincerely, Ken & Michelle

Paul and Family,

I am so saddened to hear the news of Donna’s passing. I taught with Donna for one year at PWC which helped shape the teacher I am today. Getting the chance to work with someone as passionate, hard working and as dedicated as Donna was truly a privilege. She was one of a kind and will be dearly missed.

My sympathies, Barbra Ann at the loss of your sister -in-law. I have very fond memories of you in Marystown.

I am sorry to hear of your dear sister’s passing, Kathleen. May she rest in the loving arms of God our Father.

The Brenton Family :
The lady was my gym teacher in high school, I was deeply saddened when I heard of her passing. Even though I wasn’t particularly found of gym class, she introduced me to how fun and rewarding physical activity could be. She always played to my strengths and adapted everything to what I felt comfortable with. As someone with a physical disability, my stamina has been greatly important to me and I can remember every winter I asked to do weekly laps around the gym with her where i had to wheel around in an attempt to :chase her”. Every week it got easier and easier, until one day I could push myself all around the University and do other physical tasks with ease. Her encouragement and charismatic demeanor was something that I have never forgotten and have added greatly to the level of independence that I continually strive for. Cavalier and P-DUBS for life. Rest Peacefully
Love to you and yours <3

Paul and family,
Surprised and saddened to learn of Mrs. Brenton’s passing. I feel so blessed to have been a student of hers in the mid ’90s at PWC. She struck that incredible and often impossible balance of commanding respect while also being a supportive friend, as well as being highly competitive while also empowering movement at any level among her students. In later years I competed against her on the curling ice. She would always insist that I call her by her first name then, but I never would. We would share a chuckle over that each time our paths crossed….

We are so sad and sorry to hear of Donna’s passing. Such a kind and gentle lady. Our condolences to Paul and her dear sister Kathleen.

Paul and family, Very sorry to hear of Donna’s passing. Cherish the wonderful memories at this most difficult time.

Have had many a conversation with Donna over the years at BH. A beautiful person who has passed way to early. My condolences to you Paul and all her family and friends.. RIP Donna

I had the pleasure of working with Donna in the area of Physical Education for 9 years. Her motto was simple when it came to students in PE… “our job is to leave them pink and smiling”! And that she did… they left her classes with a good bit of activity… and a boat load of love and caring from her… and that would make anyone smile.

Always supportive for anyone on staff who needed help… and for me… an amazing friend. You left a beautiful mark on all of us… you will be missed.

To the Brenton and Green families. So sorry to hear of the passing of Elaine. Condolences to the entire family..

Mrs. Brenton was one of the best coaches I ever had at PWC. She was everything an educator should be: kind, patient, & encouraging. She had high standards and taught us what hard work was. She showed us a lot more than how to win on the court. Her lessons have helped guide so many of us as we’ve grown into our lives and careers. She will be warmly remembered by so many. My sincerest condolences to her family and friends.

Mrs. Brenton was one of My favourite teachers. She took me under her wing, saw I had talent in sports, helped build my confidence and supported me to become the best person I could be. She helped me break out of my shell and achieve things as a female at a time when women were not able to always make it in certain professions. She helped give me the confidence to go for it. I speak of her often now even 30 years later. About how one person can change the course of your life. Her legacy lives on in people like me, in that extra word, in that extra moment of time, in that pat on the back for a well done. I pass on some part of her spirit to my own trainees and in that I know she will always be alive. My deepest condolences to her family. You shared her with so many and I thank you for that. God bless Mrs. Brenton.

Our heartfelt sympathy to all the family. Our thoughts are with you all at this difficult time. RIP Donna.

I was deeply saddened to hear of Donna’s passing. When I joined Bally Haly, Donna was one of the first to guide me along. She was always there to support, encourage, and have fun. I am so grateful to have experienced her kindness, positive attitude, and love of life. Rest In Peace

Well, this is sad news I wasn’t expecting today. What can I say about a coach, teacher and beautiful person who took a chance on the shy, tall kid and helped her build skill and confidence? It was great to also have conversations over the years as teaching peers. So much appreciation for hours spent in the gym, life lessons taught and learned, and for the road trip to Doyles, NL on a yellow school bus for Grade 12 Provincials. ‘Miss Brenton’, you are in all our hearts.

I was a student at PWC from 1986 to 89. I played volleyball and basketball under the guidance of Miss Brenton all 3 years. . She was a super coach and tireless volunteer who always found something positive to say. In 1988 we travelled to the Codroy Valley for 3A basketball. Provincials. This was back in the day when parents weren’t involved. We all depended on the coach for everything…. It is one of my fondest high school memories . I often talk of those glory days.
She gave me a love for sport I have carried with me throughout my life. I have passed this love on to my 3 children who all are involved in sport and the local and provincial level..
Thank you Miss Brenton, Rest In Peace.

To Donna’s Family
I remember her fondly as my phys Ed teacher at PWC.I graduated in 1985 she was young and so inspiring.I always enjoyed my time with her.I am so sorry for your loss . My thoughts are with you st this time. Rest in peace, Donna.

My condolences go out to to Donna’s husband and family. I was saddened to hear of her passing. I had the good fortune to work with Donna for eight years at PWC. She was a Cavalier through and through and as a senior member of staff, she always had a perspective worth hearing and heeding. A dedicated physical education teacher and a passionate golfer, Donna will probably be best remembered by those who worked with her as a great colleague.

Ms. Brenton was my Phys. Ed teacher at PWC. As someone who is neither competitive nor athletic, I always dreaded gym class. That is, until I had Ms. Brenton as a teacher. She was gentle and encouraging, and made a constant effort to ensure that class was enjoyable and fun, even for those who normally hated sports. I always appreciated the fact that she made even the least athletic among us feel valued in her gym.

My deepest condolences, Patricia (and the entire family), on the loss of your sister-in-law, and a truly gifted educator.

So sorry to here of Elaine’s passing, we went to high school together, always a. Athlete. Condolences to her husband and all the Breton family. RIP Elaine
