Obituary

Elizabeth Blythe (Betty Whalen)

Born December 5, 1942, Lanarkshire, Scotland

Died September 15, 2017, St. John’s, Newfoundland

It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our Mother, Grandmother, Sister and Aunt.  Elizabeth passed away at St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital in St. John’s with peace and grace after a 13 week fight that she could not win. Our mother passed with her hand in her daughter Cathy’s and all of her love in our hearts.

Elizabeth was a special woman who loved deeply the children in her life. This love extended beyond her own children and grandchildren to her nieces and nephews and their children. Elizabeth was passionate about many things, especially her love for animals.

Predeceased by her baby sister Heather Whalen and her parents Barbara (McCormack) and Roy Whalen.

Left to mourn with fond and loving memories are her children Gordon Martin, Cathy Martin and her fiancée Howie Trussetter and Heather Blythe. Cherished grandmother of Kristopher Pertoci (Katie Higgins), Nicholas Pertoci (Courtney Fowlow), Alexander Martin (Nicole Link),  Victoria Martin and their mother Heather Martin. Loving Sister to Anna Maynard (Peter Lathwell), Roy Whalen (Yvonne Whalen). Special Aunt to Ken, Keith and  Shawn Maynard, Nikki and Shannon Whalen as well as their children and grandchildren.  Other family members  Margaret Martin, Diane Martin and Herb Long. Special friend to Trish Currie, Pauline Law and Nancy Dalzel.

Much gratitude to Dr. Cox, Dr. Phair, Dr. Mercer, Dr. Genge and the medical staff at 7 West, who took special care of our mom over the last 9 weeks. We will never forget your love and compassion.

Flowers gratefully accepted or donations made to SPCA, NL Lung Assoc., and the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

On behalf of Uncle Gar & Aunt Marjorie Cooper’s family, we send condolence. The road ahead will be tough but your precious memories will help lessen the pain. Know that we are thinking of you all at this difficult time.

To Betty’s family: So sorry to hear of Betty’s passing. Your tribute to her is very touching and would make her very proud. She was a great friend when we were growing up in Deer Lake where we shared lots of fun and laughter. I’m so glad I got to spend some time with her last Fall when I was in St. John’s. Rest in peace, old Friend. Hugs!!!. Daphne (Campbell) Bartlett

sorry for loss of your sister Aunt Anna . love you lots of hugs

To the family, so sorry to hear of Betty’s passing, we lived on the same street when she lived in Deer Lake, it is so sad to lose a loved one.

Thoughts and prayers to the family.

Thinking we may be related.

God Bless.

So very sorry for your loss Cathy, Howie, Kris, Nick and family and friends. I recall your mom/grandmas kindness when we first met her about 24 years ago. It is great that she was able to end her journey in Newfoundland where she (and ultimately you) wanted to return to. Thoughts and prayers to all of you.
