It is with heavy hearts we announce the peaceful passing of Elizabeth Young at the age of 83. She was born in Central Newfoundland but grew up in Stephenville where she loved to ride the horses on the U.S. base.

Elizabeth excelled in school. She attended the Education Program at Memorial University in St. John’s and then taught in Grand Falls-Windsor. Subsequently, she attended Nursing School at the General Hospital where she met the love of her life and soulmate, Dr. Robert Young. Education was extremely important to her and she always wanted to attend University which she did late in life, graduating with an Arts Degree from Memorial University.

Robert and Elizabeth married in 1957 and had three children – Wayne (wife Cindy Lu Edwards, grandchildren Ian Simms and Kirk Simms [wife Janelle Kelly] and great-grandchildren Dane and Weston); Heather Jacobs, QC (husband Neil Jacobs, QC and grandchildren Matthew and Rebecca); and Ken (wife Lisa Pike-Young and grandchildren Harrison and Ethan).

Elizabeth devoted her life to her family and friends, especially her grandchildren. She loved to attend NSO concerts, cook, play bridge, ski, read, hike and golf. Her favourite day was Sunday surrounded by her family. Elizabeth loved animals and their home at St. Andrew’s Place welcomed many a stray cat and dog. Bob would question if the pet had been in the house for more than an hour to find out if they had another addition to the family.

Bette, as she was fondly known by her many friends, loved and lived life to the fullest. She was loyal, interested and passionate in all her encounters. Bette always placed other people’s feelings before her own and above all, she loved Bob and her family who dearly loved her in return.

Special thanks to the wonderful staff at the Emergency and ICU at the Dr. G.B. Cross Memorial Hospital in Clarenville and especially Dr. Evan Wee. Also, many thanks to Dr. Anne Williams who provided special care to Elizabeth for years.

There will be no visitation and cremation has taken place. A private ceremony will be held from the Carnell Memorial Chapel on Thursday, September 3, 2020, at 1:00 p.m. with interment at a later date. The link to view the online service for Elizabeth Young will be available at www.carnells.com. Donations may be made in Elizabeth’s memory to the Gathering Place or the local SPCA.
