Obituary

Passed peacefully away surrounded by her loving family at Agnes Pratt Home, Eva Hutchings, aged 94 years. She was the last surviving child born to parents Lawrence and Jane Hoskins, Kelligrews. Predeceased by her loving husband Bill; son Gary; siblings Reg (Hetty), Melvin (Helen) and Eileen Pretty; and dear friend Mildred Bonnell. Leaving to mourn with broken hearts: son Wayne (Judi); devoted granddaughters Jennifer (David) and Ashley (Ryan), Halifax; Nanny’s little treasure great granddaughter Natalie and new great grandson Oliver, whom she waited to meet; Gary’s family: much loved grandchildren Dana and Colin (Calgary); loving daughter in law Dana and her family; loyal caregivers and friends Diane and Paul Pearce and their daughters; treasured friend Ferne Tilley; also, many special nieces, nephews, extended family and friends, who had come to love her over the years.
Eva was a proud WWII Veteran and followed in the footsteps of her adored dad, Lawrence, who was a “Blue Puttee”. She was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion for over 33 years, for which she received an award. She was also a member of the Ladies Royal Purple (Elks Club) for 45 years and a dedicated parishioner of St. Thomas’ Anglican Church. When Eva was unable to attend services in her later years, Rev Bob Rowlands, who she also considered a friend, would visit her at her home for communion. This gave her great comfort for which we are eternally grateful.
Our heartfelt thanks to the wonderful, Kind and caring staff at Agnes Pratt Home, Stella Burry Place, where she resided for the past 8 months. Special thanks to Dr. Cliona McManamon and N.P Sarah Coady for your dedication to our Precious Mom and Nanny. You went above the call in always making yourselves available and leaving no stone unturned regarding Mom.
The world seems a little less kind and safe now that “Nan” has left us. Eva was the last of a dying breed. She truly embodied “The Greatest Generation”. She was a loyal, trustworthy, confidante and friend to all of us. A hardworking, humble, intelligent, well read, strong, demonstrative, animal lover and Christian women who loved life and everyone in it.
The family will accept visitors at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, Friday March 8 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service to celebrate her life will take place on Saturday March 9 at 12:00 Noon. Judi & Wayne,
Although we speak almost daily, I feel the need to put in writing a little of my experience with your mother. Mrs Hutchings took such joy in life and graciously accepted whatever it offered. The grief and physical pain she endured these last months was evident, but she remained stoic to the end…Such dignity.
My most vivid memory of her is being her taxi home every Boxing night after the festivities at your house. The conversation was always the same – how grateful she was to have Judi and Wayne, how wonderful their girls were ,and how Judi couldn’t be any better to her if she was her own daughter. I think she was proud to be so loved and cherished !
Wayne, there is something about losing the last remaining parent that stings a little harder , but take comfort in this. There could be no better advocates for your mother’s health and general well – being than you and Judi have been. Your girls have been no less caring….thanks to Jenny, Mrs Hutchings had the best hair and manicure in town.
A lady with such dignity and grace will not soon be forgotten.

Condolences to Wayne and famiky. Mrs Hutchings was a Whiteway St neighbour and I remember her well.

My deepest condolences to Wayne, Judi & your family on the passing of your Mother/Nan.
Mrs. Hutchings was a wonderful woman full of wisdom and old stories. I met your mom/nan at an early age because of my mom & dad(Diane & Paul Pearce) and remember visiting many times. Whether it be picking mom up, dropping by with dad, coming to help with Christmas decorations or stopping by to just check in when mom and dad were at the cabin. Everytime I would come by there was no such thing as a quick visit, I always had to stay for a chat and some tea.
Your mom/nan would always make a point to ask about how things were going in my life at those times(good or bad) she would always make a point to tell me that I’m a strong woman and I would be able to get through anything life throws my way. That means more then anything to me. She was “family” to us even though we’re not blood related. She means so much to our family.

Mrs. Hutchings, you will be truely missed and this world won’t be the same for some time without your beautiful face. Rest peacefully beautiful angel. You’ll forever be loved and missed but never forgotten.

Lots of love,
Melissa & Jesse

My deepest condolences to Wayne & Judy of the passing of your dear mother. & nan
I had the pleasure of knowing mrs hutchings from a young age and visiting her with mom( Diane) and of course my fur baby rossco who mrs hutchings loved dearly,I have many memories that I will hold close to my heart of her one of my favorites being going to pick up mom one time and I would alway come early so I could to in and visit, this one time I didnt have rossco with me, and she had mom have a baccon sandwich ready for him so I had to leave and go get him because she would tell me how much she would look forward to his visit and having breakfast with him. Mom would always have to make two because if not Mrs hutchings would feed all her breakfast to rossco when we visited
She also made it to my wedding that meant so much to me, I have so much love for your mom/nan I will hold her close to my heart forever
So was so kind and loved. And will be missed by so many people
RIP Mrs H, take care of my rossco for me, and giving him lots of treats

Xox
