Obituary

It is with regret and sadness that we announce the passing of Father John Maddigan at St. Patrick’s Mercy Home on December 29, 2016, age 90 years, ordained Priest on June 15, 1957. Predeceased by his parents Catherine Malone and Jack Maddigan; sister Elizabeth Comerford (Stamp); brothers Richard (Barbara), Philip (Christine), Frank (Marian); brother-in-law Jim Hand, and special nephew Robert Comerford. Leaving to mourn his sister Alice Hand, St. John’s; brother Ron (Janet), Stratford, Ontario; devoted niece Judy (Comerford) Newton (Bill); cherished niece-in-law Janet, wife of the late Robert Comerford, and many other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Also leaving to mourn his Brother-Priests of the Archdiocese of St. John’s, the religious members of the Congregation of the Sisters of Mercy, Presentation Sisters, Irish Christian Brothers, as well as the parishioners and friends of the various parishes where he ministered, in particular, his ministry in Peru where he served for 25 years. We should not forget the compassion and dedication provided by his co-workers and caregivers at St. Patrick’s Mercy Home where he resided for the past 12 years, as well as, his cherished bridge partners who did all they could to enable him to play.

Funeral arrangements entrusted to the care of Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road with visitation to be held at St. Patrick’s Mercy Home on Friday, December 30th from 2 – 4 pm and 7 – 9 pm.  This will be followed by visitation at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road on Saturday, December 31, 2016 from 10 am to 12 noon and 2 – 5 pm.  Visitation will continue on Monday, January 2nd, 2017 from 9:00 am – 10:30 am at the Basilica of St. John the Baptist.  A Mass of Christian Burial will then be held on Monday, January 2nd, 2017 at 11:00 am from the Basilica of St. John the Baptist.  Interment to follow in the Priests Plot at Belvedere Cemetery.  Donations in Father John’s memory may be made to St. Patrick’s Mercy Home.

I was away from work when Father Maddigan passed away and did not hear of his passing until this past week. I was saddened to hear that one of the kindest, gentlest, people I .had ever met was gone. His legacy will be felt for a long time by anyone who had ever met him. He had so much positive energy, love and compassion, it was almost impossible not to feel good in his presence. I feel blessed to have known him. Our loss is Heaven’s gain.

To the Maddigan family, my thoughts and prayers are with you all at this time.

Will miss you Father John. My sincere condolences to the family. Father John was an important part of our team at St Pat’s as well as a special friend. I know that he is gone from us in body but will remain in my heart forever.

I am very sad to her of the passing of my dear old friend . We meet as my Grand father Nix Wadden was a close friend of Fr . Dad . He Was very good to me when I was at the old General Hospital after major surgery . My praayer are with him and his family

I am so sorry to hear of Father John’s passing. He was inspiring to all who met him. His compassion, wisdom and kindness for humanity was something to behold and look up too. It was a blessing to have known Father John and I will miss him. My thoughts are with you during this very sad time.

It has been an honor and a privilege to have known Father John Maddigan for almost thirty years. He has been a treasured Bridge partner of mine for decades, all the while displaying selfless acts of immense caring and kindness toward humanity. Father John, you will be so missed, and may you rest in eternal peace. With great respect and admiration, Pramila and family.

Our deepest sympathy to the friends and family of our dear Father John. He was such a kind and gentle soul and tended to my mother’s every need before she died at St. Lawrence Hospital. I was at the hospital when he arrived by foot in a snow storm to visit her (Theresa Slaney). God Bless you Father John – we think of you often.

We send our sincere condolences to the Maddigan family. Father John was a great source of comfort to both my parents during my Father’s stay at St. Patrick’s Mercy Home. A very sweet, kind man who I’m sure will be missed by the many lives he touched. We feel blessed to have known him.

John Maddigan was a person respected and loved by all who knew him. Always a positive and upbeat person he was at his best in his interactions with people as a spiritual advisor or as a bridge player. for this and many other reasons his spirit will be with us always. Rest in Peace Father John.

I got to know him when I worked as a pca at St Patrick’s mercy home in 2009. He was a nice man to know . He had lots of story’s to tell. He will be dearly missed. Thinking of the family at this sad time.
