It is with sadness that we announce the death of our Mother Jean Stick (nee Pretty) of St John’s NL.

Jean grew up in Grand Falls NL. She enjoyed her childhood and developed a life long love of nature while spending much of her youth amongst the woods and forest of the Exploits River. Her life’s routines revolved around the seasons, school and church. Family ties were strong and life long friendships were made.

Jean left Grand Falls after completing her Grade 11 and enrolled as an RN nursing student at the Salvation Army Grace Hospital in St. John’s. It was there that she met her future husband Desmond Stick.

They married, welcomed two treasured children into their lives and thus started the happiest period of her life. Tragically Desmond was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer at age 42.

Jean nursed him with love and devotion until his end, and then found the strength to rally, face a new day and raise their two children on her own. Their welfare was her top priority and sole focus. She was a caring, courageous and committed woman, a loving and attentive mother.

She enjoyed gardening, walking, concerts, volunteering, and reading, but most of all enjoyed the company of a solid circle of family, friends and neighbours, who provided generous support throughout the years. At age 84 she decided to move to Kennys Pond Retirement Residence. The staff and community there welcomed her with open arms. Thank you all for making her time there so wonderfully special.

Jean was predeceased by her parents Ada and James Pretty, her infant twin brother and sister, her brother Jim, sister Verna ( Terry) and her beloved husband Desmond. She is survived by her son Jim, her daughter Ann, her grandchildren Michelle, Robyn, Desmond, (Kaila), Jordan, two great grandchildren Shawn and Shayla. She enjoyed a special bond with Andrew and Andrea, her nephews Christopher and David, and grand nephews Adrian, Gavin and Riley.

She will be missed greatly, but all who love her are delighted that she and Desmond are finally united again, never to be separated.

Cremation has taken place. A funeral service will be held from the Carnell Memorial Chapel on Tuesday, January 19th, 2021 at 11:00AM. Inurnment to follow at Forest Road Anglican Cemetery. The service will be live-streamed for those unable to attend. Donations in her memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.

Ann, Jim and family, It is so sad to hear of your mother’s passing. I have said many, many times that I was so blessed to have spent two years staying in the upstairs unit and sharing meals your mother, father and you two after I left the army and attended the College of Trades and Technology. They were my “rock” as I plowed my way through the courses. Jean had a wonderful, “up” personality and the most impish grin backed up by a wit that matched my own ability to joke around. My sister Shirley and I made a trip to visit her in 2007 when we were back in Newfoundland. I have pictures from the visit that shows she had not changed, even had that same lovely trademark grin. Some people leave a forever mark on your life, Jean and Des did that for me. PS: Ann, sorry I was such a torment.

Jim and family. My sincere condolences at this sad time.

Dear Ann and family,
I was very sorry to hear of your Mom’s death . I met her at Kenny’s Pond where my Mom and Stepdad, Florence and Ron Torraville, both lived until they passed away (Mom in 2013 and Pop in 2020). I often went in to Kenny’s Pond for lunch with my Stepdad and always had a little chat with your Mom. She was a lovely lady and I will miss seeing her when I can get back to visiting friends at Kenny’s Pond. Sending sincere condolences and prayers to all/. Stephanie Gavell

Ann, Jim and families, please know that you are in our thoughts. The Reardon’s all had a special place in our hearts for Auntie Jean as we remember the bond shared between our families. “Auntie” Jean was not our blood relative, but was the closest thing to family for us. Mom always said that after Uncle Des had passed, Auntie Jean avoided going home to an empty house by stopping into Mom and Dad’s in the mornings after dropping you both to school – saying there was too much traffic to cross the road. They shared the good and bad times together, and I know they are all united again.

Jim , Lisa & Family,

We are so sorry for your loss.

With our Deepest Sympathy.

Charlie and Marianne.

Kevin and Jane Aucoin extend our condolences to the Stick family members. Many, many years ago we rented an apartment in her home on Portugal Cove Road. She was very good to us way back then. We have lived in PCSP for the past 45 years and now its our turn to sell and move to a condo in the City.
