Francis (Frank) Edward Monahan

February 12, 1928 to February 13, 2020

Obituary

Passed peacefully away at the Health Sciences Centre in St. John’s on February 13, 2020, Francis (Frank) Edward Monahan, formerly of King’s County (Sussex), New Brunswick, aged 92 years.

Frank was a born adventurer, having left his childhood home in Southfield, New Brunswick to make his way to Montreal, then Greenland and finally landing in St. John’s where he settled down with Sadie, the love of his life.  Frank owned and operated The Family Barbershop on Duckworth Street in downtown St. John’s for 40 years.  Barbering was his vocation, passion and a big part of his social life.  He was also an avid sportsman, spending many days in the woods with his dogs and on ponds casting a line.

Frank loved to travel and especially enjoyed visits to Texas in winter to visit his son Craig and family.  Their miniature schnauzer Lola became a fast and loyal friend.  He also delighted in seeing the Ontario countryside during visits to Ottawa to stay with his daughter Shelly.

Predeceased by his wife, Sadie Emma (nee Howell); parents, John Edward and Edna (Baldwin); sister, Norma and brothers Bernard, Ron and John.

Lovingly remembered by his children Paul (Sandra), Sharon (Gerard), Craig (Jill), Shelly and Glen; his doting grand-children Gregory (Victoria), Shane (Sarah), Leah (Terry), Evan (Jessica), Beth and Sean, and great grand-children Luke and Billie; sister-in-law Alice Monahan (Montreal).  Frank leaves a wide circle of nieces and nephews; dear friends Don Dalton (St. John’s), Alwyn and Roger Howell and Glenn Stagg (Wesleyville) and hunting companion Spot the beagle.

A special thanks to the nurses on the 5th floor cardiology unit at the Health Sciences Centre for their gentle care and kind attention during our father’s final days.

Visitation at Carnell’s Funeral Home on Friday, February 21 from 7 – 9 pm.  Celebration of Life service to take place at Carnell’s on Saturday, February 22 at 12:00 pm with reception to follow.

In keeping with Frank’s love of animals, donations may be made to Beagle Paws Rescue, www.beaglepaws.com.  To send a message of condolence please visit www.carnells.com.

Paul, Shane, Greg, great grand children and families. So sorry to hear of Your dad, grandfather and great grandfathers passing. 92!! A long lived life……and from what I understand he lived to the fullest. Thinking of you all at this time…..his Legacy lives on in all of you. Bless you all.

My deepest sympathies cousins! You’ll probably be wanting to call him to tell him something funny you’ve seen or heard for some time to come. He’s probably already heard it, but tell him anyway and have a laugh together.

I read the Telegram online regularly to stay current on events in my beloved St. John’s. I am saddened to see your dear father passed away. I recall both your parents as two of the friendliest and most welcoming parents I ever met. I’m thinking of you all as you both grieve and celebrate your dad.

Take care,
