It is with broken hearts that we announce the sudden passing of George Walter Murphy on June 5 at the age of 58.

Predeceased by his parents V.Gloria Fifield and Lewis Murphy, mother-in-law Josephine McGrath and father-in-law Mike McGrath.

Leaving to mourn his wife of 12 years, Joy (McGrath), sons Aaron and Lewis, daughters Bailey and Krista, stepsons Devin (Shania) and Daniel (Megan), grandsons Jack and Kolton, and stepmother Ann. George will also be remembered by his brothers Lewis (Kay), Brian (Vasuki), Dan (Mi-Kyung), Noel (Nancy), and Kent (Faith), sister Mackenzie (Roger), brothers-in-law Nick (Pam), Mike (Ann-Marie), sister-in-law Michelle (Paul), and his very special brother-in-law Walter, along with a large circle of family and friends.

George loved serving the people of Newfoundland & Labrador. In his youth, he was President of C.B.A.C., a former Citizens Band Radio Club with hundreds of members. He was an organizer for the Pumpkin Patrol, organized toy drives for children at Christmastime, and was involved in numerous community-based organizations.

In the pre-Social Media era, George harnessed the potential of the internet (at the time) seeking signatures province-wide for the 2nd largest petition ever tabled in the House of Assembly for official reading.

He was well known for advocacy with the Consumer Group for Fair Gas Prices, he also served as M.H.A. for St. John’s East from 2011-2015 as well as acting manager for Jiffy Cabs. Recently, he worked for the Liberal Government and spoke fondly of all members. What made George stand out from many other politicians was his love and devotion of all classes of individuals equally. No matter who he met, he would take a keen interest in that person’s life and would develop a friendship with them. He was well known for helping people – from providing food to medical equipment and always listening to their needs. He was the driving force behind the rebate from Newfoundland Power to the residents of NL as well as a major advocate of the “pull over” law.

He had a great passion for C.B. Radio. He collected and refurbished many rare breeds of radio from far and wide. He loved spending time with family and friends, playing guitar around a firepit and parodying songs which were sure to get a laugh. He loved spending hours by the side of the pond fishing with his sons and making memories with them.

George lived a full and purposeful life. He was a gentle giant with an equally big heart who will be missed by all who have had the pleasure of knowing him even for a moment of time.

Resting at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, on Thursday, June 10 and Friday, June 11 from 2-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held from the Carnell Memorial Chapel on Saturday, June 12 at 11 a.m. Due to limited numbers and following COVID regulations, attendance at the funeral service will be invite only. The funeral service will be livestreamed for those unable to attend in person with the link available above. George’s family would like to thank everyone for the kind messages and outpouring of support, however, please consider sending messages of condolence or making a donation in George’s memory to the memorial fund nlgasman2021@gmail.com instead of traveling long distances for the visitation.

Like so many others, I was saddened to hear the news of Georg’s passing. George gave me a chance when I needed it most, which is certainly one of many things about him I will not forget. Sending sincere condolences to George’s family, friends, and all who knew him.

So sorry for the loss of George this past weekend, our condolences to Joy and her family. I knew George a very long time, i meet George over CB radio many years ago, and have been very good friends since then. George you were a great friend to me, and you always treated me and others with great respect. You will never be forgotten George, i will miss our chats on the phone and in person. RIP George, from Maureen and myself.

used to look forward to George coming on every Wednesday on fair gas and oil prices my condolence go out to his family . RIP GEORGE .

My deepest condolence to Joy and her family. George was a good friend from earlier days and it was a great shock to hear the news of his untimely death. My thoughts are with all who knew and loved him. He was a an easy man to befriend that’s for sure. Kind, compassionate, heart of gold and could crack a good joke from time to time. He liked to play his guitar and sing a song now and then. He had the qualities that made a good man, father and husband. George cared about all people, that will be his wonderful legacy. Joy and family, I hope with the love and support from each other, and the many friends and acquaintances, you’ll be lifted enough to help get you through the difficult days ahead. Bless you all.
I watched the funeral service online this morning and thought it was a wonderful send off for George. RIP my friend. ???? Linda & Vernon Penney

Sending my deepest condolences to George’s family. George and I never met in our adult lives but we were both born the same week in April back in 1963 so I guess we met as babies!!! Our mother’s shared a room on the maternity ward and I was named after George’s Mom, Gloria! I always wondered where my name came from as all my older siblings (I have 7 older) were called after one of our relatives. When I asked my Mom where she got my name she would always say “Lew Murphy’s wife was in the hospital with me when you were born and that was her name”.
George obviously made his mark on this world and I wish I had had the opportunity to meet him. Thinking of you all as you navigate the days ahead. Much love.,
Gloria Maher (Walsh)

I used to look forward to George coming on every Wednesday on fair gas and oil prices my condolence go out to his family . RIP GEORGE .

Joy and family it is with great sadness that Mi-Kyung, Hannah , D.J and I, are mourning the loss of George…
George was literally and figuratively, ‘larger than life’. George never pursued wealth, just happiness in its simplest of forms. I wanted to share some thoughts about George to give you and others who knew him some personal insight to who he was and what he meant to me as a big brother.
George was caring! He cared, and took care of those around him. George was usually the first one to greet me at the airport whenever my family or I came back for a visit. He often used his famous John Wayne impression, “Well Pilgrim, welcome back to Newfoundland!” My wife will never forget meeting him for the very first time….she couldn’t get over the size of the guy and his dialect. Pretty soon she grew accustomed to hearing “Newfenese” and to this day attributes the saying, ” nudding much by'” , to George!
George was humourous and a fervent sports fan. I often traded barbs with George over politics and sports. Though he didn’t play any sports, unlike myself, he was an avid supporter of the Boston Red Sox, Pittsburgh Steelers and his Canadiens. Any game between the Denver Broncos and Steelers, Red Sox vs Yankees, or Canadiens vs. Rangers was sure to be full of hatred for each other’s teams..I always thought of him while watching any of these matches and I will continue to do so. I am truly going to miss that comraderie going forward….
George was patient! When I was a young pup dad often ran out of patience with me during fishing trips. Thank God for George! It was George who often stopped to help me with baiting hooks properly, casting my line and reeling without tangling lines. When the time comes to go fishing I will remember him! ….. …Another example was in primary/elementary school. George introduced me to his hobby of building model planes and ships . He took great patience on teaching me how and where to apply the glue correctly, along with the paint and decals. I later passed this advice onto my son who also enjoys that hobby. I always said to my son D.J, “you can thank your Uncle George for that.”
George was compassionate! Though he was indeed a big man, he was a real “softie” on the inside! I think that is what the vast majority of people will remember him for, especially his coworkers, constituents and the press. He was approachable and so damned down to earth! He told it the way he saw it and helped many people and many causes along the way. We will remember him as being one big teddy bear!
George really was, ‘larger than life’. There is a large hole in the Newfoundland and Labrador landscape left by his sudden departure from our family. We could all make the world a better place to live if we could learn to laugh and love, the way George did. I eagerly look forward to getting back later this summer to celebrate his life, post covid.
Rest in peace, big brother!

My condolences to Joy and all the Murphy family. I’ve known George for many years and was shocked to hear of his sudden passing. He will be missed. God bless you all. RIP George. ????????????

To George’s family thank you for sharing his service with us today. We never met George but every Wednesday he was there talking to us in his warm, friendly & caring way. God bless you all as you mourn & hold his loving memories even closer to your hearts. RIP George

To Joy and Family, sadness and shock to hear of George’s passing.. I got up at 6:15 PDT this morning to watch the service online.. I was a Jiffy driver for 15 years, and a good friend of George. I moved to Vancouver in 2009, and our friendship continued, and George would often email me to praise the Habs and to remind me that the Leafs suck. So many memories, so many laughs, and fun times. When George was dispatching, and if it was a slow night and the phones weren’t ringing, George would entertain the fleet with his imitation of “SNOOK” (the best ever) and countless other characters. George would take it upon himself to ease the boredom, and have a laugh or two, and have some fun. I never thought I would ever say this but, GO HABS GO, just for you George.. RIP big fella.

So sorry for your loss and the family.I did not know George personally ,but from tv.Watch him every week on ntv..Never missed him on the news for his oil and gas news…He seemed to be a wonderful person.Sure going to miss him……Patsy Best ,Wesleyville,Bonavista Bay..n.l.

Sorry to hear of George’s passing. My thoughts and prayers for the family and his friends. Say a pray for us in heaven.

I was both shocked and saddened to hear of George’s sudden passing. I knew George from Grade School. He was a pleasant, sweet person. I will miss seeing him around and chatting with him or commenting on his Facebook post. My heartfelt sympathy to his Family. May you be comforted by your beautiful memories of him. RIP George.

I first met George in 1987 when I worked at the Vera Perlin on Pennywell Rd. George drove the clients of the school.
The students dearly loved him and so looked forward to their ride daily. The sweetest kindest most gentlest man with the biggest heart you could ever be blessed to know. I too was always happy to see him, we couldn’t wait for a joke or two.. the laughs could be heard throughout the building.
Years has passed and we would run into one another from time to time., nothing changed, George still had a way of putting me in stitches lol.

Our sincere condolences to his wife and family, may God give you the strength to get through the days ahead. ????

To Joy and all the Murphy family
So sorry to hear of George’s sudden passing. My thoughts and prayer are with you all at this difficult time.

George RIP, and thanks!

I met George who was a friend of my brothers when we were teenagers. We would get together with friends at Christmas time, and have a lot of laughs. Over the years we fell out of touch, and I we would run into each other from time to time. He was such a nice person who always had a smile on his face, and always had something positive to say about anything that was going on. I was lucky enough to run into him again on my last trip home. Actually picked myself and my husband up in his cab when we were going for dinner on George street. We had a few laughs, and talked about how things had changed over the years in St.John’s.

Really great person, with a big heart and smile.

My heartfelt condolences to your family George, RIP

Gone too soon, a faithful and gentle giant who exuded practical, sensible, Murphy-wisdom. George has shown how one person can promote good ideas that benefit society. Rest with Gloria and Lew. Deepest regrets to his family for the loss of a larger than life man.

Never met you, but spent a few good evenings in Seoul with your brother, Dan & his wife Mi Kyung even before they were married. My wife and I helped your dad get to their wedding. Rest In Peace George, I am sure your father is siinging in his beautiful baritone voice as you enter the gates of Heaven.

To the Murphy Family,

I am very sorry for your loss. George was an authentic, kind and caring person.

In our youth when we were both bouncers at Trappers’ he would often talk my ear off. The nights flew by and the laughs were many. He always treated patrons with respect and decency. That was not always common place behaviour..

Years later after his public profile grew and the respect from the community for him was high I would interview him frequently on radio. He was still the same humble easy going friendly who stood guard on George St a couple of decades before.

He was just a good guy and he touched us all. His death is a loss for our province.

God bless you George!

Joy and family. My husband Garnet and I have listened to George on the radio for years and then were fb friends with him. We watched all his lives and we got to know him a bit and laughed and joked around and he friended us back. Nova Scotia and Newfoundland felt closer with that social media friendship. Tears came to our eyes instantly when we heard the news. If we felt this way about him through social media alone, we can only imagine what a truly wonderful man he was in person. We wish we had of had the honor. Sending our deepest condolences to all. He was the best!

To Joy and family,
I am saddened and shocked to learn of George’s passing. My condolences to you and your family. Praying for you.

George’s Family

It truly was a shock to receive the phone call Sunday morning saying the our cousin George had passed., words cannot describe how we felt. I remember him coming to Tickle Cove with his Dad Lew on many occasions, it was always an enjoyable time. George continued to come down for a bit of trouting like his father when you least expected he would show up full of life and energy. George will never be forgotten, his kindness, love, energy and above all his love for NL. He was a generous caring man. I saw NTV’s tribute to him with the fire pits and it was absolutely moving but it was George. We send our deepest condolences to his family and extended families his light will always burn in the flicker and sparks in each and every fire pit. Nuddin like it !! ????????

I first heard of him calling Nightline on VocM years ago I was blown away by his common sense and clarity of thought. no wonder there has been an out pouring on his passing, he was one fine person so sorry to family, and all of us

When I saw this post of George Murphy, it reminded me of a poem I wrote a little while ago and I am dedicating it to his memory because I am sure that his last tweet on earth “Nudding like it” will be his first thoughts when he enters heaven. (gbd).

HEAVEN
Is it a place where flowers bloom
And cliffs flow to the sea
A place of quiet solitude
Where souls roam aimlessly
Is it a place where voices sing
In choruses and song
A place where music fills the air
Where every faith belongs
And will our paths be as a cloud
All feather-soft and worn
Will we behold the rays of sun
At sundown and at morn?
We do not know, we cannot know
But its mystery we may deem
Until we pass beyond all time
And beyond all mortal dreams

Grace Butler Difalco

Joy,

I was shocked and heartbroken to hear of George’s passing. I have so many fond memories of George, especially from my childhood when he was our daycare bus driver, whom we all affectionately called “Bigfoot.”. He was so beloved by us kids, and as soon as someone spotted him coming down the lane, the excited chorus of “Bigfoot is coming!!” would spread through the place.
And of course, I have many great memories of election campaigning and District Association meetings at the house, where his love for you and the boys shone through in his interactions with you all. He was a gentle giant with a heart of gold, and it was always a joy to be in his company. Thinking of you and the boys, and the rest of the family, during this time.

Rest easy, Bigfoot. ❤

Thanks for sharing George with us. He made a difference to so many, and won’t soon be forgotten. I am a better person for knowing George. Deepest condolences to those he loved and those who loved him.

While we didn’t know him personally, he lived just up the street from us. We looked forward to his weekely gas predicitions, he came to our houses campaigning, and we had a great chat! He was a great man!

My condolences to all of The Family. I never met George, but I have many friends who knew him, some of whom knew him very well. The Habs went on to win that next game, & those first 2 goals in game 4 by the Habs are what I’m calling George’s Goals. He orchestrated it with The Hockey Gods up in Heaven, where he is running & also manning all of the Radio’s & CB’s, especially the older ones, which are his favorites. I often listened to him in Halifax on Wednesday’s, when he did his Gas Prediction, & as he did his discussion with the News 95.7 hosts, usually with Rick Howe. He was a great & welcome voice from home, with his unmistakable accent, & his great good humor, & his always very pleasant, kind, warm, caring, nature. George was a very dedicated & extremely hard working, very smart, family – oriented man, who always wore his heart on his sleeve. He also always had his life/ work balance, & priorities exactly right, which is not always easy to do, for anyone. On his last night with us, he tweeted out a now famous pic, in which he said, as he sat with his loved ones in front of his fire pit, which he was thoroughly enjoying, he said, in his own unique way: “Nudding like it”. You were, & are, quite correct, George, in every way. But also, there was no one quite like you. Indeed: There was “Nudding” like him, frankly. He was a most unique man! He lived a life that was VERY well lived, & it really was a “purpose filled life” that he led, in every sense. It was cut way too short, yes. But his memory will always be very close, & vivid, especially to his beloved family & to his intimate friends. But George had MANY friends, in many places. Again, my most sincere condolences to all of the Family.

We offer our sincere condolences to all the Murphy and McGrath families on the passing of George. You are all in our thoughts and prayers at this sad time.. Hold on to all your precious memories. RIP George

I was so saddened to hear of George’s Passing,i never knew him personally but i enjoyed seeing him on NTV with he gas & Oil updates. A Genuine & Gentle Soul.
My Deepest Condolences to his Wife Joy & Family & Friends. Rest in Peace

Condolences to the family and a tribute to George

Ever since Joey Smallwood outlawed the International Woodworkers of America, a union chosen by the loggers of this province, who chose to go on strike against the paper companies to try and get better working conditions and higher pay. I have paid special attention to politics and the people who are paid to represent us in the House of Assembly.
A few years ago George Murphy, who had served as an MHA with the NDP decided to step down from politics, was a guest with Ramona Deering on CBC, Crosstalk radio show. As I was a great admirer of George I phoned in and had a chat, praised him up for the work that he did as an MHA, not only for his district but for the people of this Province, that he loved and I expressed my disappointment that he was stepping down.
Ramona made the comment to me, “that’s strange coming from you, you are usually criticizing politicians, my answer to her, “not too often I find a politician who is dedicated to his District and also what is best for this province. But George was one of the best and dedicated his time and energy for the province he loved. He was the kind of person that every district would have been proud to have him represent them.
To the family, you have my deepest sympathy.
George tried to make this province a better place for his children and for this we should forever be thankful.
And yes I’m sure if George had been around at that time he would have been on the picket line fighting for our families, he was that kind of man.
I am very proud to have known him.
Rest in Peace, George

Condolences to family and friends he is certainly going to be missed

I was shocked and saddened when I heard this news Sunday morning. George Lew and I go back to our school days and he always referred to us as that rough crowd from Mullock St. I had the pleasure of reconnecting with him back in 2017/18 when he called about driver training for the Jiffy Drivers. We had several meetings swapped some old stories I even brought him a cup of green tea one day to which I said what the hell are you drinking. George in his calm cool collective way gave me a lecture on how green tea was good for you. Every time I ran into him he was always the same way big smile and great for a laugh and strong presence in any room he entered. As has been said he will definitely be missed but never forgotten. To his family, cab operators CB operators politicians friends and all who are mourning his loss my deepest condolences
Godspeed George

Most sincere condolences to the Murphy family and to the many thousands of individuals and families that found a true connection with George Murphy.. I knew George in the same way that most people in the Province got to know him..
I saw in this ordinary individual special qualities—integrity, honesty, compassion and humility and I grew to admire and respect him from a distance.
The loss to his family is understood only by them, but the loss to the entire provincial community is felt by all of us. He surely rests in peace.

So sorry to hear of George’s passing, love to all

The Murphy family is in my thoughts and prayers. George may be gone from our sight, but, he will never be far from our hearts. Rest In Peace, George.

I would like to extend my sincerest condolences to Joy, Arron, Lewis, Baily, Krista, Devin & Daniel. on the passing of George. The outpouring of shock, disbelief, sadness and adulation for George is a true measure of his impact on his community and his province.
George was clearly one of those people who wanted to make a difference, not just to his immediate family and friends, but to his community and province and he did that with passion, genuine concern, vigor and, above all, with respect and humility.
His voice was strong, well-known and very much trusted and will be missed by many.
I know no words can take away the pain and sense of loss to George’s loved ones but I hope the huge outpouring thanks, respect and love for him provides some measure of pride and peace to you all.

Great sadness fills me knowing George is left us. His is now an eternal life in heaven. He was accurate on gas prices before; he now has Devine knowing! George was one of the most versatile, accomplished persons I have ever met. He took where he came from and multiplied it into something tenfold. We have lost a great friend and i have lost a great confident. My sincere condolences to Joy and to all his family whom he loved so much.

It was a shock for Newfoundlanders to learn of this sudden loss of Mr. George Murphy. Although I did not know him personally, I was very familiar with the values this man instilled in the people whom he served. Know that there News will never be as rich going forward. George was a celebrity in his own rite and no words can express how I feel personally or how we feel collectively with his sudden demise. I am sure that he is in peace and wherever he is he will continue to monitor the fluctuations in that dreaded “Gas war”. It will be difficult to do the weekly gas up without remembering George and his larger than life smile. RIP Sir George Murphy. You were a man of integrity and one who will never be replaced.

My deepest condolences to the family. Although, I never met George, he was a true Newfoundlander. You could feel his passion for his beloved province.. George will be missed by so many people.

Condolences to all the family. My thoughts and prayers are with you all during this sad time. I first met George when he was installing security systems back in the mid 80s and he was hit right from that moment. He had so much passion for this province I could only wish we had many more like him. RIP George!????

My condolences to George’s family. I loved to listen to him talk. I never met him in person but felt like I knew him. I listened faithfully to his gas price announcement. Well definitely miss that. A great soul !

I am deeply shocked and saddened to hear the news of George’s sudden passing. Myself and George go back a long way from my days of hanging out with his younger brother Brian, at their house on O’Regan Place. I can picture George now, down in the basement on his CB radio. His passion for CB radios was incredible. We both went to the same high school (Gonzaga). He worked in the cafeteria with Mrs. Bruce handing out Burgers and Fried & Gravy. Buying lunch at school was an adventure to say the least, with George behind the counter. Always good for a laugh and smile. He was a caring and compassionate man whose contributions to his community and NL are immeasurable. His work as a volunteer and MHA to his constituents, went above and beyond. I’ll always remember his friendly and pleasant manner. Deepest and sincere Condolences to Joy, the children, Murphy Family, Friends, and Colleagues. R.I.P. George.!! 10-4.!! Over and out.!!

Deepest Sadness from Dee Dawe (Graham in heaven) and Family

As a former Colleague in The House Of Assembly and through a number of conversations since then, I can honestly say George was a gentleman in the highest degree. He was honest, dedicated and so much for the everyday NL’er. His wit and sense of humor could fill a room and bring a smile to everyone. I found myself in the last few days just remembering some of our conversations we shared and shedding a tear for a great guy – gone too soon. RIP George. Sending Thoughts and prayers to all your family and friends .

To Joy and family.
I had the privilege of meeting and getting to know George many years ago when he worked at Rob Roy on George Street. He was, even then, a man who showed great compassion and caring for everyone he met. He was a friend to everyone and he used words and kind gestures to solve every problem he encountered. Over the years, George and I crossed paths many times and he was still the same gentle George as he was in the 90’s. He was honest, honourable, courageous, respectful and most of all, truly caring of all he met. Like that last tweet he sent out, he was the warm beautiful fire that gave warmth and comfort to so many. As he said: “Nudding like it!” Rest in peace my friend and know that you made this world a better place.

Joy and family,
I was shocked to hear the news of George’s passing. What a great person he was. A heart of gold and a very compassionate man. He had a super disposition in life, one that all of us should try to emulate. I have many memories of George as he worked in our government offices. He had a presence about him and I always enjoyed those chats that we would have in our caucus room. He had such objective thinking and his kindness was always evident.
