Obituary

Passed peacefully away at the Health Sciences Centre in her 96th year on Tuesday, February 2nd, 2021 – Gertrude Mildred Pittman. Predeceased by her parents Leonard and Frances (nee: King); her beloved aunt and uncle Gertrude Caines (nee: Pittman) and Philip Caines, who raised her in loco parentis from a young age following the death of her mother, and to whom she devoted her loving care and attention during their waning years; also predeceased by brothers Archibald and Hubert. Leaving to mourn are her loving family, son Robert (Bob), daughter-in-law Allison (Nee: Dymond), her beloved grandson Robert (Rob), and family dog Aura, “Nanny’s girl”. Also leaving to mourn nieces, nephews, friends and relatives, including special cousin Joyce Bonnell. Gertie, to her friends – Nan, to her immediate family – lived a rich and full life of determination, hard work, and devotion to family and friends. Her independence was unshakeable. She loved those dear to her fully, completely, and without reserve.

Cremation has taken place, entrusted to the care of Carnell’s Funeral Home. Due to COVID-19, there will be no visitation. Inurnment will follow at a later date at St. Mary’s Anglican Church, Lamaline.

The family would like to thank you the staff at Bonaventure Retirement Home, as well as physician Dr. Stephen Major who provided assistance and care over the last five years. Additionally, the family would like to thank the staff at the Health Sciences Centre for their care and compassion in helping Gertie through her journey.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Gertie’s memory may be made to the St. Mary’s Anglican Church Cemetery Fund in Lamaline, NL (Cemetery Fund – St. Mary’s Anglican Church P.O. Box 100 Lamaline, NL A0E 2C0) or to a charity of one’s choice.

My Mom(Bridget Richards) was Gert’s room-mate for a number of years at Bonaventure. Whenever I would visit Newfoundland I would always look forward to spending time with her. I am so sorry for your loss. May her soul rest in peace and may the life she lived leave you with wonderful memories..

I was saddened to read of Gerties death this morning.
I feel privileged to have met Gertie when she was in good health. She always “poked her head” into the room when we were playing bridge at your place……jiust to say hello and a short chat and then off she went. She loved to hear that you had won Allison.. my deepest condolences to you and your family.

Robert and family, so deeply saddened to learn of Gertie’s passing. She spent many hours in our family home in Lamaline as I did in hers. I never pick up a pack of cards that I don’t think of her-“donkey” was our game. Gertie was always a joy to spend time with. Deepest condolence to all of you. R.I.P dear lady.

Robert, So, so sorry about your mother’s passing. It was just a little while ago that Donald and I were talking about her and wondering how she was doing. She was a force to be reckoned with and I remember her fondly. Deepest sympathy to all of you.

Sincere condolences, Robert, Allison, and Robert, Jr.
Gertie was a part of our family that will never be forgotten. She always was Aunt Gertie to my two children, and we loved her dearly. Such a kind and helpful soul. Rest in perfect peace, my friend.
