It is with immense sadness and broken hearts that we share the passing of our dearly loved Grant Chalker Hiscock on July 3, 2021, at the age of 56. He passed away in his place of tranquility and peace, beautiful Brigus.

Born and raised in St. John’s, Newfoundland, Grant was the only son of Jim Hiscock and the late Gail Grant. From his childhood home on Rostellan Place to the serenity of “Abigail’s Cottage” in Brigus, Grant’s positive energy and outgoing personality brought an abundance of fun and friendships that he maintained throughout his lifetime.

Grant met the love of his life Trudy and at the age of 42, was given his greatest blessing, his precious daughter Abigail. She instantly had him wrapped around her little finger, Grant adored Abigail, was a proud “Cheer Dad”, and would be quick to say, “Thankfully she has her mother’s beauty!”. Grant’s life was blessed with Trudy’s two sons that he loved as his own, Joshua and Jared. Grant never looked or treated those boys any less than if his blood ran through their veins. Teaching them all the things he ever wanted to teach his “sons”. How to ride dirt bike, snowmobile, and stick shift….and no doubt some bad boy things too! Grant was a wonderful loving and caring husband and father, the void he has left in their lives is immeasurable.

Grant loved people, he had so many friends that every outing with Grant involved multiple stops to catch up with people he knew along the way. The annual fishing trip to his lifelong friend’s; Bert Hickman’s; cabin was something Grant always looked forward to. He would return with great memories, however Trudy was never sure if he ever packed a fishing rod as a salmon was never to be seen! Grant’s love for socialization and his entrepreneurial drive fueled his desire to open an Irish Pub. In April of 2017, together with his life partner Trudy, they opened the doors of Fionn MacCools in St. John’s. Grant welcomed his patrons who quickly became “regulars”, surely they returned for the great food, great service and cold beer; but they also came back for the welcoming smile and great conversation they received from Grant, he made them feel at home. Grant held his employees of Fionn MacCools in high regard and right now they are grieving right along with the family, because to him they were “family”. Grant was a wonderful and caring employer, at times a father-figure or advisor, and most often a listening ear.

Grant will be forever loved and remembered by his wife Trudy Chafe, daughter Abigail, sons Joshua and Jared Rowe. His father Jim Hiscock, special Uncle Ted Hiscock (Diane). Mother-in-law Hazel Chafe (Tom Moulton); sisters-in-law Tracy Chafe (Shannon O’Brien), Brenda (Bill) McCarthy, Jean (Carl) Noseworthy, Joan Chafe (Mike Griffin), Patsy (Terry) Lemoine, Catherine (John) French, Cindy (Dominic) Goudie-LaPolla; brothers-in-law Brian (Enid) Chafe, Edward (Rosemary) Chafe, Mike (Elaine) Chafe, and Shawn (Yvette) Chafe. His best friend Jerry English and cousins Craig Hiscock (Brenda) and Greg Hiscock who were like brothers to him. His work family at Fionn MacCool’s, as well as a large circle of nieces, nephews, cousins and so many close friends. We would be remised if we did not mention his fur babies Sam, Finnigan, Dottie, Butterscotch and the late Madeline and Mollie.

As per Grant’s wishes, cremation has taken place and visitation will be held at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road on Tuesday, July 13 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. and Wednesday, July 14 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Due to restrictions, and by invitation only, a private Celebration of Life service will be held on Thursday, July 15. This service will be live streamed for those who are unable to attend. Small floral arrangements or a donation in his memory may be made to a charity of one’s choice, or to the trust fund established for Abigail’s education at TD Bank on Water Street, St. John’s, e-transfers can be sent to: AbigailEducationFund@gmail.com

Trudy, I am so sorry to hear of Grant’s passing. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Denise McKinlay

Trudy and family.,
I just read of Grant’s passing and am truly stunned and heartbroken. I first met Grant at trade school in Gander way back in 1985 and we became fast friends and travelled back and forth together every weekend. We also worked together for many years at Air Atlantic . Although we didn’t see each other often, when we did get together , it seemed as if no time had passed at all. Last summer before hiking the trail to Brigus lighthouse, my wife Arleen and I spent an hour catching up with Grant at his cottage. He was so enthusiastic and full of life . Same old Grant. We chatted about motorcycles, old cars, old friends and of course our families. Little did I realize that it would be our last time speaking. Please accept our heartfelt and sincere condolences for your loss. He will never be forgotten.

Known Grant for over thirty years..he was always smiling and willing to lend a hand to anyone….he will be sadly missed. God speed buddy!

There are no words that can be said to ease your loss but know that you’re in my thoughts and prayers. May the many memories shared with you by the many people that Grant touched, bring some comfort to you in the days, weeks, months and years ahead.
Grant had presence – he made a positive mark in the hearts and memories of many. I’ve known Grant a lifetime – beginning as children growing up in the East end of St. John’s. Our paths would cross from time to time, but reconnected when you had the cabin in Whalen’s Pond – I recall how pleased he was to see the two young boys riding their dirt bikes. While I didn’t see him often, it was always a pleasure when I did – always bringing a smile and a laugh; he would stop, chat, and flash that wonderful, handsome grin of his. When he talked of Abigail – he beamed so bright. One visit to Fionn’s I remember very fondly, as I took my older Aunt there for a meal; Grant dropped by the table to say hello and came by numerous times to check in on us – he totally charmed my Aunt – he made her feel like the most important person in the place and she quickly became a fan. That was Grant – charismatic and charming.
Please accept my heartfelt sympathies for your tremendous loss.

Trudy ,
You are in my mind and heart. Please know Carl and I send thoughts, prayers and hugs to you and your family.

Trudy, Thinking of you and the kids during this very difficult time. Please take comfort in each other, your family and friends and your beautiful memories.

I had the pleasure of working with Grant for the first 14 months of my 32 year career, at Air Atlantic. Grants had a fun outgoing personality and mischievous grin that would find us getting into some devilment at or out side of work. Though I only saw Grant once after Air Atlantic, I’ve recounted several of our stories many time over the years along with a hearty laugh. Please accept my deepest sympathy and may your family’s sorrow be lessened by the knowledge that he was held in such high regards by his friends and will be missed but never forgotten.
P.S. Grant got me into “The Far Side” cartoons, Thanks Grant!

Abby

Grant was one of the most fun, easy going cool and loving men I ever came across, Although we only had a short period of time we where in one another’s life, Grant has made a great impact on my life.

As have all of you, I am wishing I was back in NFLD to come see you all and share all fun stories I have of him, But most of all how highly he spoke of ALL of you.

Anyone who had the opportunity to have met and spent time with Grant is better for it, Especially all of you for having him the most. Only person more lucky is him for having all of you.

I know Grant is looking down on all of you with his dumb smirk.

I hope to see you all again some time soon.

Rest easy Grant & thanks for everything.

I started working with Grant back in 1991 at Air Atlantic for numerous years, after we working at other places for some time, we reconnected when Grant started up IKM Testing Canada and was the Managing Director, I worked for him for five years as well. He treated all his employees with the upmost respect and had a genuine concern for everyone.
