Just returning home from a trip to this sad news. Hal was a great guy. It was a pleasure working with him during his government years. I learned a lot from him. And he always managed to bring a positive good will to the work, regardless of the challenges. So sorry to have missed the visitation and funeral. To all the Barretts, and to Betty as well….this is very sad news. Your dad – Hal – was such an iconic figure in our time together on the water. His decision to take a 30 foot Arpege to sail in an open ocean race was a watershed moment for Newfoundland sailing, and his no-holds-barred racing style elevated everyone’s game. He brought a joyous intensity to something that we all shared, and he will be missed. My sincere condolences.

Gregg, Glenn, Mark and Jennifer- My deepest condolences to you all. I will remember your dad with great fondness. We had some wonderful family times together – he was a wonderful man.

With much love, Anne

To the Barrett family,
I remember Mr Barrett from the early 80’s in the Dept. Of Development and Tourism when I first was employed with govt. I always found him to be very pleasant and quick with a smile. Sorry for your loss.

Hal was a wonderful man, he had a great sense of humor and was very knowledgeable in a wide range of subjects. He enjoyed sailing and curling and was a real chef at the grill. He will be missed.

I remember Hal as someone who generously gave support to a young competetive sailor at a time when there weren’t many about. Thank you Hal.

Sincere condolences to family.
