Obituary

Passed away suddenly but peacefully on Saturday, October 8, 2016, Robert George Holmes, aged 76. Bob was predeceased by his parents, Robert Sr. and Sarah Holmes, and sisters Mary and Anne. Leaving to mourn with full hearts: wife Janet, son Robert (Alice), daughters Perri Brazill (Dave) and Lesley Holmes (Lindsey), and stepson Jonathan Hammond (Judy); grandchildren Brandon, Meighan, Avery and Adelynn; great-grandchildren Thomas and Tyson. Deeply mourned by sister Marguerite Pardy (George), brothers, Eldred (Barbara) and Wayne (Yvonne), and by nephews Wesley, Ron, Gordon, John, and niece Heather and their families; and sisters-in-law Sandra Dunn (Lewis, deceased), Barbara Neville (Ed), and brother-in-law Eric Hammond (Sue). Bob will be greatly missed by his many friends throughout Newfoundland, and in his winter home in Florida.
Bob spent his working life at HM Penitentiary, retiring as Assistant Superintendent at the Correctional Centres in Clarenville and Bishop Falls. He was a larger than life personality who cast a broad shadow. Those of us who were fortunate enough to find shelter in his shadow will feel Bob’s loss forever.
Special thanks go out to dear friends Dave and Rebecca Coady for their friendship and support.

It was almost 12 years ago that I had the great opportunity to meet Bob. I have been in his extended family since then. He welcomed me with open arms and always a smile and of course a joke. Wither it was at his home here in St. Johns or St Pete’s Bob always made me feel welcome and like one of the family. When I told my family of Bobs passing it was such a coincidence that four of them related to him as Wayne’s brother the Character one. To leave an impression like that on people that only met him once or twice is something to be very proud of. Anyone who knew him knew he was a character at times with his jokes and stories. I will miss his smile, his jokes, his stories and his one of a kind sense of humor. May you rest in peace. My thoughts and prayers are with Janet and the Holmes family.

Janet and family,
Please accept our sincere condolences. You are in our prayers.

With great sadness
Bob was a true visionalry, and will be sadly missed.
In the time, I had the privilege to know Bob, I found him to be kind, gifted, and always an advocate for the little guy.
In Bob’s vocation, it is always too easy to become cynical, but he didn’t. He was instrumental in starting inmate education in this province, and encouraged those who worked for him to strive to be the best.
From my recollections, If he had seen that someone was trying, he would support their efforts and nourish change. I had a chance to see this on many occasions.
To the family of the late Bob Holmes, from Sylvia and myself, our deepest condolences

Lesley, Perri, Bob and Family – Just want to let you know that we are thinking of you during this difficult time and send our sincere condolences.
