Joan Margaret Rusted

September 5, 1946 to July 6, 2018

Obituary

Passed away unexpectedly, aged 71, Joan was a daughter of the late Florence and Nigel Rusted and a beloved partner, mother, grandmother and sister; Joan was known for her kindness and seeing the best in others.

Though she divided her time living in England (Portslade) and St. John’s, Joan truly loved spending time at the family cottage in Portland, Bonavista Bay where the family has visited since the 1950’s. Newfoundland’s history was Joan’s passion and she subsequently authored a book on the subject, St. John’s: A Brief History.

Joan met many people in her life, as we all do, but somehow, with Joan, they always wanted to remain friends and keep in touch, it was her special gift.  Joan’s smile and kindness will be remembered by all who knew her.

Joan will be dearly missed by her best friend and devoted partner, Denis Jenkins; son, Andrew Royle (Jill); sister, Elaine Hyde (Bob); brother, Tom Rusted (Val Chaulk); darling little granddaughters, Matilda and Madeline; niece, Angela Hyde (Jim Parsons); nephew, Danny Hyde (Cathy) and her beloved friends, Bob and Maureen Jenkins and their children Matthew, Alastair, and Claire, as well as a multitude of other relatives and friends.

Cremation has taken place. Visitation at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, St. John’s on Tuesday, July 10th, 2018 at 2-4pm and 7-9pm.  Funeral service to take place at the Anglican Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, Church Hill, St. John’s on Wednesday, July 11th , 2018 at 2pm.

I am so sad to learn, at this late date, of Joan’s passing! I never met her myself, but Joan was a great friend to my mother Alice while they both lived in England. Mum always spoke fondly of her and I know their friendship brought my mum joy and comfort whether they were near or far. Alice is no longer able to write here herself, but she would want to send her love to you all..

I am so shocked and saddened to hear of Joan’s passing. Just recently we had a wonderful visit in Newfoundland. Joan gave us a guided tour of St. John’s making sure we saw the house where she grew up and even giving us a guided tour of her lovely cottage on Bonavista Bay. When I phoned her on her birthday she was on Fogo Island. She loved Newfoundland.
Long ago we shared a room in Sherriff Hall at Dalhousie University. We were good friends and had great adventures and lots of laughs together. She was so kind and considerate and had many interests and talents. I am so happy to have her book on St John’s and I was looking forward to her writing about her father’s life.
My world is a better place for having known Joan.
My deepest sympathy to Andrew, Denis, Elaine, Tom and their families.

Dear Elaine and Bob

I was deeply saddened in learning of Joan’s passing. As you know, Joan was a staunch customer, as were you both, of Excel Pharmacy during 1he 15 years that we were able to serve you. A sweet quiet girl, Joan often came in the evenings when we’d have a quiet chat.

You have my deepest sympathy and of course Brenda’s and all of us at Excel.

Elaine and Tom and families, so sorry for the loss of your precious sister Joan.We connected a number of years ago and she brought me up to date on her life here and England. We were classmates at Bishop Spencer College. Heartfelt condolences.

Andrew, Denis and family, I am so heartbroken and shocked. Joan was such a beautiful, kind, funny, interesting friend; I will really miss her. The obituary described her perfectly; she really did have a gift for seeing the best in people.
We’ve stayed in touch ever since we met on the J and B many years ago. The last time I saw her was at her cottage in 2016; I cannot believe that I will never see my lovely friend again!
Please accept my deepest condolences.
Love to you all.
Rhonda

My sincerest and deepest sympathy to Denis, Elaine and Tom and families. Few years ago Joan joined me for a chatty, enjoyable lunch. Those whom we love so dearly, never live long enough, she shall be missed by many.

Dear Andrew , Denis , Elaine, Tom and all the family and friends,
My memories of Joan go back to. kindergarten at Bishop Spencer College and this comes as such a shock. I am deeply saddened to hear of her passing and I wish to extend my condolences and prayers to you all.
Joan was such a warm, gentle and caring person and she certainly has left footprints on the hearts of all of us whose lives she touched.
I regret I am unable to pay my respects in person as I do not reside in NL
With deepest sympathy, and in loving memory.

To Joan’s family near and far,
I could not believe my eyes when I saw dear Joan’s obituary in the St. John’s newspaper. It was just this past May that she had contacted me with the dates that she would be home for the Summer.
Joan and I have stayed in touch throughout the years from school, university, social events etc. She was a beautiful person in every way. Joan had such a quiet and calming way about her.
I can only imagine how difficult this time must be for Joan’s family. God Bless you all. RIP dear friend.

Very sorry to hear of Joan’ passing. Heartfelt condolences to Denis, Andrew, Tom, Elaine and families.

Andrew, Denis and family – I was so sorry to hear of Joan’s passing. She was a kind-hearted and gentle soul. I ran into her a couple of years ago at an event at Governemnt House, and she spoke so fondly of you both. I am thinking of you all and hoping that your happy memories of her will help you through this difficult time.

So sorry Elaine for your loss never easy..????

Joan arrived with other MUN students at the Harlow campus, years ago now. She was a delight to have in class, and she remained a friend long afterwards. I am very sorry to hear of her passing. J

Sincere condolences to the family on Joan’s passing. We were friends many years ago at Bishop Spencer and I have happy memories of spending time going to her home after school to “hang out” in today’s vernacular.

So very saddened with this news. Joan was such a lovely, kind neighbour to us in St Andrews Road. We shall miss her smile and calm, positive outlook on life.
We will always remember the first day we moved in and her kind offer of soup. We knew then what a thoughtful person she was. So hard to believe we will never see you again.
Heartfelt condolences to Denis and Joan’s family and friends.
