Blessed with a lifetime of happy memories, Nalda gently passed on January 20, 2021, encircled by the love of her life, Noel and their children. Predeceased by her parents Ronald and Flora Chafe (Nee Currie), she lived 87 glorious years.

Noel and Nalda adored each other for 72 years of courtship with an ironclad marriage of 66 years. By example, they created a deeply loving and large family, 49 strong and counting. Tallying the growing numbers gave her much joy.

Nalda’s self-professed greatest accomplishments and source of pride were her 6 children and their families: Christopher (Michele Moores), Andrew (Valerie Kean), Ronald (Anne Marie Duff), Ronalda (Peter MacDonald), Daniel (Kelly Cadigan) and Robin (Stephen Patterson).

Along with her 17 beautiful grandchildren: Jay (Amy), Nicholas (Amber), Sasha (Scott), Hilary (Chris), Lelia (Jason), Zachary (Melanie), Keely (Paul), Abram (Faryn), Miranda, Noel (Megan), Peter Andrew, Emma, Jack, Kacey, Alex, Hutton and Wesley.

And her precious 11 great-grandchildren: Hannah, Christian, Zara, Nuala, Ella, Kelton, Frank, Joshua, Sofia, Mcaleigh and Macie.

Broken-hearted is her “one and only” sister and best friend, Robin Lake “Auntie Boo”, as they were “joined at the hip”.

Nalda will also be sorely missed by her many in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends spanning all generations.

Our family is deeply grateful to Nalda’s exceptional caregiver and loving friend Pam Winsor. Heartfelt thanks to Dr. Wayne Gulliver, Dr. Anne Williams, Dr. Stephen Lee, Dr. Stephanie Carpentier, Dr. Abayomi Ogunyemi, Dr. Mary O’Brien, along with the nursing staff at the Health Sciences ICU and Reverend John Courage for their tender care and compassion.

Nalda was in her element when the family gathered around the piano for a singsong. She had an uncanny ability to find happiness and humour in everything and in so doing, exuded a comforting and enduring warmth to all those she encountered. Her devotion and unrivaled love for her family was fierce, unapologetic, total and absolute. She was a uniquely positive force in all of our lives.

Cremation has taken place. Unfortunately, due to Covid-19, there will be no visitation and the funeral will be private. The funeral service will be livestreamed by following the link on Carnell’s Funeral Home website, www.carnells.com, from the Carnell Memorial Chapel on Freshwater Road at 2 PM on Saturday, February 6, 2021.

In lieu of flowers, donations will be gratefully accepted at Rainbow Riders or Operation Smile.

Later, when the world is a safer place, we will have a grand and fitting celebration of Nalda’s life and sing around the piano once again.

‘Sometime’

The evening now is winding down,

With children in bed, lights on o’r the town,

We’re lucky you know, we’ve family and health,

Perhaps the best measure of one’s personal wealth.

A curious thing, is life on earth,

That continued alliance between dying and birth,

We’ve memories of loved ones, of’t wished told her more,

That the love that she gave, made us richer for sure.

                                                                                      AH

                                                              All our love forever,

                                                              Us 6 & your Noelie “3”

Dear Ron and family: Your Mom was such a significant presence in your lives and so many others. I thought of you when I read this poem.

Lindbergh, Anne Morrow
Testament from The Unicorn and Other Poems

But how can I live without you?—she cried.
I left all the world to you when I died;
Beauty of the earth and air and sea;
Leap of a swallow or a tree;
Kiss of rain and wind’s embrace;
Passion of storm and winter’s face;
Touch of feather, flower and stone;
Chiselled line of branch of bone;
Flight of stars, night’s caravan;
Song of crickets—and of man—
All these I put in my testament,
All these I bequeathed to you when I went.
But how can I see them without your eyes
Or touch them without your hand?
How can I hear them without your ear,
Without your heart, understand?
These too, these too
I leave to you!
May her memory be a blessing.
Helen Martinez, PBVM

Linda and I were so moved by the beautiful service that you had for Granny Hutton. ( as our daughter Emily always called her )
For myself, they would often show up at folk festivals and such (ie. Twillingate) that my singing group would be at. They usually stood right in front, off to the side and always stayed around to say something supportive to us afterwards.
Granny would have been very proud of you all.

Her love of family and the bonds that bring us together like the music that continues to enrich so many of our lives because of her gift is truly a testament to the power of one person. I am thrilled to have known her and to know so many of the family who continue to enrich our lives and our community daily. I am thinking of you all through this difficult time with love and prayers.

Noel, Hutton Family, and Dear Booie:

I’m was deeply saddened when I heard of Nalda’s passing. It has been a terribly long journey for you all., but how blessed was Nalda to have her family with her through this journey.

I just wanted to say how fortunate I was to have been in Nalad’s beautiful and fun loving company through Sarah Jane Conklin on many occasions. How could you not have a smile on your face while in a room with Nalda. Her welcome kiindness while in her presence, I just loved every minute, and had no problem making myself right at home while visiting. Many wonderful memories to be treasured, thank you Nalda ( and Booie)!!

I want to thank you, Noel, for allowing me and many others to be a part of Nalda’s Celebration of Life through webcam. “Times sure are a changing!”

Many different friends passed through Riverview Avenue over the years, and Mrs. Hutton treated everyone like one of her own… offering something to eat, drink, a drive somewhere or a warm hug. For those of us who had the pleasure of experiencing this, her memory and loveliness will always be treasured.

We Can Shed Tears That They Have Gone

We can shed tears that they have gone,
Or we can smile that they have lived.
We can close our eyes and pray that they will come back,
Or we can open our eyes and see all the good that they have left us.
Our hearts can be empty because we cannot see them,
Or our hearts can be full with love that we’ve shared.
We can turn our backs on tomorrow and live yesterday,
Or we can be happy for tomorrow, because of yesterday.
We can remember them and only that they have gone,
Or we can cherish their memory and let it live on.
We can cry and close our minds, be empty and turn our backs,
Or we can do what they would have wanted,
Smile, open our eyes, love, and go on.

To Ronalda and the entire Hutton family I extend my deepest condolences. I have wonderful memories of your Mom – she was always so welcoming and kind.
You are all in my thoughts at this difficult time.

“Her devotion and unrivaled love for her family was fierce, unapologetic, total and absolute.” Amazing..

Robin, you’re one of our fav people we’ve ever met and after reading about your Mom I now know where that light, humour, beauty, and ability to make the ones you’re around feel loved has come from.

To all the Hutton clan, we’re really sorry to hear about “Nalda”.

My Dad doesn’t remember too many people these days with developing dementia, but he remembers the Chafe sisters well. They started school together in the days when the boys went to Spencer for kindergarten and stayed buddies their entire lives. When Nalda and Robbie visited Parkdale he would lay down his work for a few minutes and come out from the dispensary to greet them. The smiles on all three faces told the story.

You will all miss her so much.

Doug Butt and Margaret

Noel and family – I am so sorry to hear of Ronalda’s passing -thinking of you all – Jo Ann Organ

Our thoughts and prayers are with family and many friends of Mrs. Hutton today. Mrs. Hutton was such a sweet and caring person who loved life and all people in it. She made the Hutton home on Riverview Avenue a legendarily welcoming place full of music and laughs. She was a role model parent who balanced her natural motherly safety concerns with a blind eye turned to the harmless mischief we would get into, all in the interest of making sure we were having fun. Her family was her greatest priority and her wonderful legacy will live on through the forty nine who will celebrate her incredible life. She will never be forgotten by the thousands who had the pleasure of her company, hospitality and warmth. Family, friends and faith will see all through this sad time and allow us to gleefully remember Mrs. Nalda Hutton and the life she lived so fully. God bless Mrs. Hutton!

To all the Hutton Family,
We are so sorry to hear of your loss . Thinking of you all and may the “ ever so many wonderful memories” help you get thru this very sad time..

Mr. Hutton (‘Uncle’ Noel), Chris, Andrew, Ron, Ronalda, Danny, Robin and families,

I was so very saddened to hear of ‘Auntie’ Nalda’s passing. I have many wonderful and special memories of her throughout my life… as a child when we lived in NL and during all my visits through the years after our family moved to the mainland. She was an amazing woman. Incredibly kind, warm, thoughtful and always genuinely interested in and supportive of all those who were blessed to know her and be touched by her remarkable spirit. Her warmth and empathy shone especially brightly whenever I was visiting during my sister Janet’s illness through her frequent check- ins, comforting and supportive words, and …. of course… yummy treats! My parents considered Nalda a very special friend and I know they were truly honoured to have been part of her life. Sending my heartfelt condolences, love and big hugs to the entire family. You have all been left with an incredible legacy which I know the Hutton clan will embrace and act upon wholeheartedly.

Our connections span generations and have always been built on respect, friendship and caring.. I held your mother in high regard. She was always a positive and loving person. I have wonderful memories of carolling outside your family home, and easily working our way inside for more sing-songs and drinks. Nalda was an exceptional host: interested in others and always kind. She left her mark on many, including me. I was teary-eyed this evening when I walked by your home, but also grateful for having known her.

Your heart can be empty because you can’t see her Or you can be full of the love that you shared

You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday Or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday

There was no one so good as Mrs. Hutton: warm, kind, funny, caring, and one of the most beautiful souls I’ve ever met. She asked about others with sincere concern and could offer wonderful advice or even just some loving words of care and support. Just thinking about her would bring a smile to the face of anyone who knew her.

Words can’t express how many lives Nalda has touched personally and through her family. She is a shining soul whose light lives on in her children and grandchildren. She’s just behind your shoulder smiling.

In 2019, when I was working on the bio-play about Margaret Duley, people told me that Nalda was the woman to ask about her. Through Miranda, I arranged a visit. Nalda, Noel and Auntie Boo shared with me the most incredibly detailed memories and their admiration shone through. Full of grace and class, Nalda made an indelible impression. I’m fortunate to have met her and I’m sorry to her whole family for our collective loss. xoxox

The Grand Dame of Newfoundland. She was the personification of grace. We were always delighted by her company and the treats which we could not leave without and then the apologies when her health would not allow her to create them. She was so very special and so very loved and anyone who had the opportunity to know her, so very blessed.
The family, certainly one of the finest I know will rally and support each other but her loss is immense and deep as was the obvious love of Noel and Auntie Boo . She will never be forgotten. Noel, Auntie Boo, and the entire Hutton family our deepest condolences. We loved her too but not like you.
