Margaret Maude Walsh

Obituary

Our family is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Margaret, dearly beloved wife and mother.  On Tuesday morning, February 18th, in the presence of her loving family, Margaret Maude Walsh (nee Wickham), age 83 years, passed peacefully away at the Leonard A. Miller Centre.

Margaret was first and foremost a loving mother, grandmother and devoted wife.  She would sing the praises of her children to all who would listen – they were her greatest achievement.  Although she had a large family, Margaret’s table was always open to one more and she welcomed anyone to join at anytime.  Her sociable, loving and sweet demeanor and her great sense of humour resulted in a vast number of friends of all ages who considered her a motherly figure, a sister, a friend, and a confidante, not to mention a magnificent card player.

Margaret loved family traditions and became famous for her old fashioned Newfoundland fudge at Christmas time.  She believed in celebrating every milestone big or small, whether a birthday or a distinguished award.  She had a lovely way of making those around her feel unique and special.  She was a beautiful person who accepted everyone for who they were.

In the family-owned business, Excel Pharmacy in Churchill Square, Margaret was the smiling face customers first encountered when they walked through the door.  Her sweet disposition and charm made a huge impact.  It was she who won over customers day after day.

Music was a great part of Margaret’s life too.  She loved Newfoundland and Irish music and could be seen at many local performances.

One of her daily rituals was to feed the birds that gathered in her back garden. Margaret loved birds and now has wings of her own, closely watching over all those she loved so dearly.

Predeceased by her parents, Margaret and John Wickham and her brother, John.  Leaving behind to both mourn her passing and to celebrate her life are her loving husband of sixty four years, Basil; her children, Beverly Tucker (Kyle), Brenda Bursey (Bob), Margaret Walsh (John), Basil Brian Walsh, Barbara Chalker (Chris), Bernice Batten (Tony), and Robyn Knott (Tom); sixteen grandchildren, Krista, Adele, Victoria, Scott, Christopher, Stevie, Maggie, Ben, Nikki, Elizabeth, Ryan, James, Alexandria, Sam, Jacob, and Angela, and their partners and spouses; five great grandchildren, Edward, Emily, Hayden, Max, and Madilyn; her siblings, Leonard (Peggy), Mary, Carol Ann, Eileen, Frances (David), Lorraine (Gordon), Louise (Spencer), and Kevin; brothers-in-law, Des and Victor Walsh.  Also many beloved nieces and nephews and a large circle of special friends.

Thanks to the staff at St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital and a special thank you to the wonderful staff at the Palliative Care Unit, Leonard A. Miller Centre.  A very special thank you to Dr. Tara Tucker, Ottawa, for her kind support and advice. To all of you, your kindness and care was very much appreciated and made an impact on all of us.

The family will receive visitors at Carnell’s Funeral Home at 329 Freshwater Road on February 20th from 7 pm to 9 pm, and February 21st from 11 am to 2 pm and 7 pm to 9 pm.  Service will be held from The Carnell Memorial Chapel on Saturday, February 22nd at 10 am. Cremation will follow the service. Internment will take place at a later date.

Flowers gratefully accepted or donations in her memory can be made to Dollar-A-Day Foundation or Daffodil Place.

My heart goes out to my family over the loss of my amazing Aunt Margie. She will be dearly missed by so many, as she was very much adored. She was a very special aunt to me. Every time I saw her, she had a big bright smile and the kindest words to say. She always went out of her way to make me feel special. I have so many fond memories of her from my childhood, and adulthood that if I tried to write them all it would take me hours and hours (I have thought of many of those memories this past week). As a child, I loved visiting Excel Pharmacy, and as a teenager I enjoyed working there. It was so nice to be in the presence of my wonderful aunt whenever I had the chance. The day my first child was born I clearly remember her coming into my hospital room, taking him in her arms and showing me how to hold him properly. She made it look so easy. Throughout my life, I saw the kindness my Aunt Margie bestowed on everyone around her, and her sweet, gentle, loving ways taught me lessons about life and the importance of being kind to others. I could say so much more. It was very difficult to be away from home this past week. I wish I could have been with my family during this difficult time. My thoughts are with my entire family including my mom, my aunts, my uncles (especially my Uncle Bas), all of my cousins (and second and even third cousins) and everyone else who loved my Aunt Margie. I am thinking of you all.

Bev, my dear friend, Basil and families: my heart is so torn to hear of the loss of your precious mom, wife and grandmother. Last time I saw her smiling face was at St. Clares. We were so happy to see eachother and she was to be going home in a day or two. She was a beautiful lady and always so upbeat and kind. After just losing my precious son on January 10th, I understand too well your pain and loss. Time is our best friend right now but it is still so very difficult to accept the loss of your loved one. May you be guided by knowing that she now has her wings and flying with the angels along with my Ryan. Our deepest and heartfelt sympathy to you, Bev, and your families. God bless you, Basil, as you mourn.

To the Wickham family I am so sorry for your loss. I apoligize for not attending as I only just read it here this morning. Take care and stay close to each other. Fly with the angels Margie.

Dear Barb and family,

Bernice
Thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Another bright star in the night sky.

God speed.

I would like to extend my deepest sympathy to Basil, the Walsh Family, the Wickham Family and to their extended families and friends.
I felt a soft gentle breeze and heard a voice saying that a great lady had just received her wings. That ladies name was Margaret. Remember the good times. When we were in our mid teens, I felt that she & Basil were like older siblings to me. I felt so comfortable talking to them that I could tell them almost anything.
I’ll be thinking of her & you all.
God bless
Sincerely, Nelson Brace
