Mary Bridget Sinnott (nee Noftall)

April 24, 1936 to May 30, 2020

Obituary

Passed peacefully away on May 30th, 2020 at Agnes Pratt Nursing Home, Mary Bridget Sinnott (nee Noftall) age 84.  Born on April 24, 1936 in Point Verde, Placentia Bay, she was predeceased by her husband Thomas Joseph Sinnott (1987), parents Walter and Agnes Noftall, siblings Theresa Noftall, Dorothy Benson (deceased Kevin), Ray Noftall, Eugene Noftall, parents-in-law John and Gertrude Sinnott, sister-in-law Joan Mackey (deceased Leo), brothers-in-law William Sinnott, Michael Sinnott (deceased Madeline), Terry Noble and grandson Joseph Luedee.

Left with a lifetime of fond and loving memories are her children Mary Parsons (Randy), Cynthia Warford (Frank), Gerard Sinnott (Connie) and Pam Hawkins (Sandy Greene), grandchildren Randilyn, Robyn (Jeremy), Ryan (Leslie), Jeffery (Robin), Shandelle (John), Chad (Janey), Evan (Kathleen) and Lauren (Greg), great grandchildren, Alyssa, Maryah, Kelli Lynn, Kirby, Avery and Emily, siblings Winston (Beth), Brig (Joan), Bernice, Fred (Barb), Don (Linda), and David (Elaine), and sisters-in-law Shirley Noftall, Helen Noftall, Alice Kavanagh (Mick) and Mary (Hennessey) Sinnott.

Mom was the eldest of eleven children, including 3 sets of twins. She was the hardest working woman we know. At a young age, she assumed the role of second mother to her younger siblings and all the responsibilities inherent with that role.  She was happiest in the kitchen as she loved to cook. She could feed an army. The more the merrier was her motto and everyone was welcome at her table. She made the best homemade bread, pies and Christmas cakes. If she knew you at all, you were guaranteed to receive one of her famous Christmas cakes.

Mom was a social butterfly and loved to meet new people so every outing became a social event. Whether it was at the grocery store, church or out for a walk she would stop and chat to people, whether she knew them or not. We always said she could run for mayor. She especially enjoyed her time spent at the Paradise Seniors Club where she had so many friends.

She loved life and she loved her family. Mom attended every event with her grandchildren whether it was hockey, basketball or soccer, music, dance, or graduation. She was so proud of their accomplishments and successes. Mom loved all children especially her great-grandchildren who fondly referred to her as Nan-Nan and Great-Nan. They loved visiting with her when in town and she loved doting on them. She was loved so much by everyone who met her.

Most of all, she was a woman of great faith. She said the rosary along with her list of prayers several times every day. If someone was sick, they were added to her ‘prayer list’ and they never came off. It was her dedication to her faith and prayers that brought her grandson Jeffery home safely from two tours in Afghanistan.

Mom’s needs changed when she was diagnosed with dementia. The disease slowly robbed her of the quality of life she was used to living. When you have a loved one with dementia, you mourn their loss twice. We feel blessed that Mom remembered her family right up to the very end.

We are thankful to the staff and residents of Hillcrest Estates where Mom resided for almost three years. It felt like home to her from the first day she walked through their doors. We were devastated when Mom’s needs outgrew her stay there. We are also beyond grateful to the amazing staff of Agnes Pratt who assisted with mom’s transition to long term care. The professionalism, love and care that Mom received during her short five-month stay is beyond words. The stories you shared and love you showed for Mom helped us especially during her final week. Our gratitude is immeasurable.

We would like to express our sincerest thanks to Dr. Robyn Wade, Mom’s family physician who Mom loved. To Dr. Kim Babb, geriatrician, who guided us through Mom’s journey with this terrible disease and was one of her strongest advocates, we cannot thank-you enough. Her only (favourite) daughter-in-law Connie was more like a daughter to her. You treated our Mother like your own. Mom loved you so much and was thankful you were such a big part of her life.

Cremation has taken place. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic a private service will take place and a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Donations in her memory can be made to the Alzheimer’s Society or a charity of one’s choice. Arrangements entrusted to Carnell’s Funeral Home.

“We remember their love when they no longer remember.”

That You Remember Me

I’ve learned so much throughout my life

but there’s much I don’t recall.

I know it’s in there somewhere

but it’s hard to find it all.

It’s not that I’ve forgotten you,

or the things I said I’d do;

I remember everything

but it’s hidden somewhere I can’t see

just beyond my view.

You see, there is a shadow where

there didn’t used to be,

and sometimes when I look right there

it just confuses me.

I remember lovely flowers,

and songs I used to sing.

I remember springtime showers,

and rainbows they would bring.

I remember movies

and who would be the star,

but sometimes it’s so hard for me

to know just who you are.

I love to watch a baseball game

or listen to the birds.

I love to tell you secrets.

I love to hear your words.

I love for you to sit with me;

perhaps you’ll hold my hand

and tell me that you love me:

that I’ll understand.

My mind has ways of taking me

where I don’t want to go.

I know I know your name, you see;

just right now it’s hard for me

to think of things I really know,

and to know what really is

and what may not be so.

Though I might forget you,

it’s important that you see

just how much it means to me

that you remember me.

Gerard and Connie …. God bless your beautiful angel Mother.
Whoever wrote this obituary gave a wonderful snapshot of the glorious life that she lived.
My mom has a dear friend who’s very spiritual and she also teaches nursing in Alberta. When trying to find a tiny bit of peace and comfort when my brother (37) had passed; She told me “to visualize a door….passing is like a door opening and our spirit steps through. ““With the Divine and our guides and angels , our path is planned before we take on these earthly burdens” she said. “We do not leave alone.” “Never.”“An Angel or passed family member will arrive. Glorious.”
Signs will come that she is safe. Be open to them. I have experienced them. They are incredible.

I pray for both and her family – for grace, for strength and courage. Love TANIA AND TREVOR
