Niramol Nugroho passed peacefully in her sleep on Thursday, October 22, 2020. Her warm and loving spirit endeared her to many friends and acquaintances alike. Nira worked tirelessly to become a business leader in Atlantic Canada’s restaurant industry. Her journey from a humble upbringing in the slums of Bangkok is a story of tremendous adversity, faith, and ultimately, success.

Nira’s thoughtfulness and ceaseless optimism allowed her to live a joyful and fulfilling life. She quietly gave back to her community in both Canada and Thailand. Nira changed many lives for the better. Her loving presence will be greatly missed and her memory will be cherished forever.

Nira is survived by her son Derek, a sister, two brothers, and many nieces and nephews.

Nira’s visitation will be held at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, St. John’s, on Sunday, November 8, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Her funeral will be held the same day from The Carnell Memorial Chapel at 2 p.m. For those who are unable to attend, the funeral will be live streamed.

Nira will be laid to rest in Thailand.

I’m saddened to learn the news of Nira’s passing, now over a year ago. We met as classmates in the first offering of the MEC program at Dalhousie University in Halifax NS in the Fall 1999 & our paths went in different directions afterwards, hers farther east & mine out west. I remember her intelligent questions in class & our study group meetings, as well as her warm smile & friendly nature. Gone too soon — my sincere condolences to her family. Godspeed to all.

Kind regards, Judy Lloyd, Victoria BC

We are truly sorry to hear the loss of Nira. Our sincerest condolences to the Nugroho and Gingergrass family as we send healing prayers and comforting hugs.

Derek, be strong.
Mom will always be in your heart.
Take care!

Derek I’m so so sorry to hear of your loss. I know how great your Mom was-she was such a kind and beautiful person and that consistently came through whenever I saw her or, particularly, when I was with my Mom. Your Mom was just so kind to my mom; she even came to my art shows. And I’ll treasure the photo I have if she and I, arms around each other, at one of those Archives shows. I’m sure she’s still with you, looking out for you, challenging you with love and that focused look -and wonderful smile. My thoughts are with you. Jo Napier

Sending deepest condolences to family.
Be strong Derek.

So very sorry to hear this news. What a wonderful lady. I had countless meals at her fantastic Halifax restaurant where I felt like a welcomed member of the family each time I entered. If I missed a week, she would always ask if I was OK last week.

My deepest condolences to family and friends.
