Phyllis Mary Lavinia Dixon

June 13, 1927 to November 9, 2018

Obituary

It is with great sadness that the family of Phyllis Mary Lavinia Dixon announce her passing on November 9, 2018, at St Patrick’s Nursing Home in St John’s, NL at age 91.  Born in St. John’s on June 13, 1927, she was the eldest child of Reginald and Genereva Warr of Springdale where Phyllis lived her early years, later moving to St. John’s during her teenage years. Phyllis was a graduate of Prince of Wales College, and the General Hospital School of Nursing. Phyllis’ career provided the opportunity to work in the communities of Harbour Breton, Come-by-Chance and St John’s. While accompanying a patient from Harbour Breton on a coastal boat in 1948 Phyllis met George Dixon. Following a romance, the couple were married and settled in George’s home town of Fortune, where they resided for 15 years and where their daughter Gail was born. They moved to St. John’s in 1965. Phyllis loved life, her winters in Florida, playing bridge, crossword puzzles, dining with friends and telling enthralling and humorous stories followed with a hearty laugh that will live forever in the safety of our hearts. Including her late parents, Phyllis was predeceased by her husband George, sister Marjorie; and sisters in-law Edna and Hazel Warr. Phyllis leaves with fond and loving memories daughter; Gail (Ed McClare), Simms Settlement, NS, granddaughters; Lynn and Beth Rodgers, Bedford, NS, Dave Rodgers, Ottawa ON, great-granddaughter Charlie Sampson-Rodgers, Bedford NS; brothers Garnet (June), Springdale, George, Springdale and Kevin, St. John’s; sister; Ada (Jack) Janes, Clarenville, sisters in law, Grace Thornhill, Beatrice (Charlie Pope) all of St. John’s, and brother Robert Dixon (Margaret) of Peterborough, ON. Many thanks to family and friends especially Sadie Thistle and Jack & Ada Janes for their kindness and attention to Phyllis during her final years and especially to the staff of St Patrick’s Mercy Home and The Clarenville Retirement Centre. Visitation will be held at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, on Monday, November 12 from 10 am to 12 noon, immediately followed by a Memorial service in the Carnell Memorial Chapel.  Interment at Mount Pleasant Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers donations graciously accepted by the St. Patrick’s Mercy Home, Alzheimer’s Society, or charity of donor’s choice.
