To know her was to love her.

The family of Valerie are devastated at the tragic loss on December 31, 2020, after a courageous battle with mental illness. Predeceased by her parents Mary and Gerald Dwyer and her babies, John Carlos and Charlee Valerie Maloney.

Valerie was born in Gander, NL in September of 1963, and grew up in a family of ten siblings. She and Charlie met and made a life together, eventually moving to St. John’s where she worked for twenty years as a Telecommunications Operator with the RCMP.

Valerie, despite her pain, wasn’t her illness. She was a friend to many.  She showered her friends and family with love and thoughtfulness, and was there for everyone.

Her witty sense of humour made her a fun loving companion. If someone was in need they wouldn’t have to ask; she was there. Her first instinct was to be kind, it came naturally to her. Those of us who were loved by her were fortunate; her love was abundant.

Leaving to mourn her loving husband of 34 years, Charlie Maloney. He was with her every step of her struggle along with her beloved dog, Roxie,

Her siblings and spouses, Wayne and Joan Dwyer, Don and Ann Dwyer, Queen and Dave Blundon, Eileen and John Walsh, Jim and Loretta Dwyer, David and Marilyn Dwyer, Pat Dwyer, Mary and Sam Parsons, Maureen and Barry Clout, Ness and Dave Skinner.

Her in-laws Ellen (Nellie) Maloney, Don and Dorothy Maloney, Dave and Leeann Maloney, Rhonda and Scott Davidge.

Valerie had a very special relationship with her many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews, who will deeply miss her.  Everyone of her nieces and nephews will say that she loved them like her own, and they all had a special relationship with her.

Valerie had deep, meaningful and long relationships with her many friends and colleagues. Their support along the way has to be acknowledged; the outpouring of love helped her more than you can imagine. Thank you, you know who you are.

Donations may be made to The Trevor O’Keefe Legacy Fund. email: slaintementalhealthtok@gmail.com. Flowers happily accepted.

Visitation will take place at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, on Wednesday, January 6, 2021, from 2pm – 5pm and 7pm – 9pm. Funeral service will be held from The Carnell Memorial Chapel on Thursday, January 7, 2021 at 11am.  Due to Covid Restrictions seating is limited, please reply to the e-mail below if you would like to attend the service. roxy31233@gmail.com.

Rest in Peace Valerie.

Mental health can be such a hard battle to fight. I didn’t know Valerie, but I work in the same field. We face real challenges in our unique role. Despite her trials, it sounds like Valerie was a joyful person, a generous spirit, and obviously loved and cared for by many.
Your family is in my prayers.

My deepest condolences to the family and friends.

My deepest condolences to Valerie’s family and friends. May she rest in peace.

My deepest condolences to Valerie’s family and friends and colleagues. My thoughts and prayers go out to you all suffering her loss. I never had the privilege of knowing her, however, I can only imagine everything she must have gone through with her job. The job she had for such a long time was not an easy one. Throughout all those years of service things just pile up and became to much for her to handle.
It sounds like Valerie was an amazing person with a big heart, and just gave to much of her herself away to help others that she didn’t keep enough of herself to help her fight her battle with the disease.
As someone living with this disease myself I can assure you that she did what she though was right for her and everyone around her; which is why I ask you not remember her for giving up at the game of life, but remember her warm heart that made her such an amazing person.

Sincere and heartfelt condolences.
You are in our hearts, thoughts and prayers.

My deepest condolences to you and your family.
Praying that you will find peace in these difficult times.

To Charlie, the Maloney and Dwyer families,
I am so very sorry for the loss of your precious Val. Our world has lost a beautiful soul who touched the hearts and enriched the lives of everyone she met . Words are inadequate to describe what was the essence of Val. She was always so sweet, witty, lively and fun. We could all learn from the love and kindness that Val sprinkled wherever she roamed. She was such a kind, loving and caring soul who had the incredible ability to make everyone feel so special . How blessed were you that she was yours. Though it may not seem possible now, in time, your loving memories will comfort you. A new light now shines a little brighter in the heavens. Wishing you all the peace, love and memories a heart can hold.

To the Dwyer and Maloney families , We are so sorry to hear of the devastating loss of your beautiful Val. You will be comforted by the family and friends who will surround you with love. She obviously was a shining light both at work and with her family. She will be missed forever by so many people who loved her so dearly. Joan Maloney and Denis Fitzpatrick, Moncton, New Brunswick

I was working in Grand Falls when Val began her career with the RCMP in Gander, of course we talked on the radio and phone for quite a while before we actually met. And knowing her certainly enriched my life. We always knew that wherever we were, Val had our backs. She was one of the best at OCC. It was always so nice to hear her cheerful, confident voice over the airwaves – professional always but knowing that before the day or night was over we were probably going to have a chat and a laugh on the phone.
Valerie was a delight, and I feel among the fortunate who knew her. God bless you all, my thoughts and prayers are with you.

To the entire Dwyer family: Our very deepest condolences on the passing of a beautiful woman. Many hearts are broken with the loss of Val. May you find much comfort and strength in the many wonderful and cherished memories you hold deep in your hearts. I remember fondly the great memories of visiting your family as a young girl and then later stopping by to see your mom, Aunt Mary, as I drove by Gander each summer. Keeping your family in our thoughts and prayers. May God bless you all. Josephine and Lance Appleby

Charlie,Ness and Dave so sorry to hear this news of Val , keeping you in our thoughts and prayers . May you find comfort in the days ahead . Greg and Bonnie

To all of Val’s family, Judy and I send our condolences on her untimely passing. May you take some comfort in knowing that you are obviously in the thoughts of many, many people.
RIP Val.

Bob & Judy Kelly

But you must also realize that Val’s pain is over, a pain that was not evident to a lot of people who knew her. The world was a better place because Val was a part of it. The love and condolences that people have expressed towards her are a testament to how she has affected people. who knew her. May she rest in peace.

Val was a beautiful soul that I first got to meet in Gander in 1994 when I started working with the RCMP. She was one of the first people I met and she welcomed me with open arms. She was the kind of person that made me feel like I knew her all my life. She was genuine, kind, caring and considerate. Her smile was contagious. She was beautiful on the outside and so, so beautiful on the inside too. I am saddened over her passing. I choose to remember her as the last time I saw her – her face lit up with her beautiful smile as we chatted about the good old days of many years ago. Rest In Peace, Val and thank you for your service.

My sincere condolences to Val’s family. I was one of many RCMP members that Val watched over while we were working. She was our ‘back-up’ and was there for us relentlessly, making sure she did everything she could for us. I’ve worked with several fine OCC members but Val was always on top. Many of us knew that when we signed on and heard her voice, she had us covered! Her loss is heaven’s gain, and her family and friends will ALWAYS have great memories. Best wishes.

Deepest condolences to Charlie and to the Dwyer family. Rest in peace Val

Sincere condolences to Valeries’s entire family and relatives, including her RCMP family. Such a terrible tragedy. I did not know Valerie as I retired before she started her career. with the Force as a Civilian Member. Valerie was working in the very stressful, important and demanding role of Communication Operator assisting members of the general public and especially the RCMP Officers attending crime scenes.
The dedication and leadership demonstrated by Communication Operators is of uppermost importance to the police responders and victims of crime.
Communication Centre Operators attention to detail, follow up and their leadership during very difficult situations ultimately could and has over the years played major roles calming very dangerous and life threatening situations. God Speed Valarie and may you Rest In Peace.

Our most sincere condolences to Charlie and the entire Maloney and Dwyer family. Words cannot describe the profound loss you must all be feeling at this time . Val was always a pleasure to work with. She was a very kind and thoughtful person and could always be counted on to make you laugh every time you worked shift with her. Her dedication to her work and her love for her family was always 110 %. RIP Val . We will never forget you kind and gentle heart…..Ted and Susan Bradbury , Stratford PEI.

Patti Tabor

It is with heavy hearts that we pass along our deepest sympathies to you, Charlie and the Maloney family as well as the extended Dwyer families. As we read the beautiful comments that Valeries many family and friends have shared, we can only add , “They say it all”. A beautiful person with a generous heart.

So so sorry. I arrived in Gander Jan 1973 as an RCMP. Bonnie and I were friends of the Dwyer family. We were close to Dave and Queen. I later worked many years with Val in St.John’s. Val was the greatest I ever knew or worked with. R.I.P

Terry Scott

Our most sincere condolences to all of the Dwyer and Maloney families. As a retired RCMP member I can attest to the immeasurable value of the calm, reassuring voice of an OCC specialist when you’re on the road alone at night in precarious circumstances. Val was clearly one of the best and her service did not go unnoticed. I am drawn to the words of Newfoundland icon Ron Hynes and his tribute song GODSPEED, which he wrote after the untimely passing of Gene MacLellan from PEI many years ago.

We wish you all strength and comfort, and Val Godspeed. May she Rest In Peace and may your wonderful memories of her be a true blessing.

So sorry for your loss and that big hole left in all your hearts now. Cherish all those wonderful times spent with your beautiful sister.

Charlie,
Words seem just so inadequate at this time but know you and your family are in our thoughts. Our most sincere condolences.

Charlie the Maloney and Dwyer families. I am so saddened by the sudden passing of Val. My heart goes out to you and your families during this very difficult time.
We will all miss Val she touched so many of our lives with her kindness and understanding. She truly was a beautiful soul.

Hi Mary, on behalf of our Fox Family we want to extend our sincere condolences to all the Dwyer Family on the sudden passing of Valerie.
I have to say I haven’t seen Val in a long time & when you’re kids 5 year age difference means a lot… but as soon as I saw the first post on Facebook Saturday I knew exactly who she was.
I was more familiar with your older siblings, Don & Ann,Queen & Dave,Eileen ,Jim & Loretta, Dave & Pat. Some of the spouses I don’t know.
My parents no longer live on Read St. they have moved to the Seniors Cottages in town. When I told them they were so saddened to hear the news. My mom remembers the many times she would have coffee in the mornings or afternoon at Jose Tiller who lived across the street from your parents, your mom would often join them along with Mary Butler & Shirley Hoffe.
We have lots of memories growing up on Read St. in a much simpler time, neighbours looking after neighbours & kids looking after kids.
My brother remembers a time when Val secretly placed a Tim Hortons Mug in his car, but he knew it was her!! My mother still has the mug & she even brought it out yesterday when we were FaceTiming him from California as he was recalling the story.
As a Nurse for 40 years I have seen my share of patients over the years with mental health illness. My family as many others has also share the pain of a loved one being in such pain & anguish that the only way forward for them is to end this pain themselves.
Mary , you have a strong loving family & I have seen this personally when your Mom would come for her appointments. She was always supported by one of the girls. She was always so proud of her family.
I’m thinking that Val is in the arms of your Mom & Dad & they are resting easy together.
Take care of yourself & I pray you will get strength in the days ahead.
I just wanted to share this poem that I heard a t a friends funeral.

The Dash Poem (By Linda Ellis)

I read of a man who stood to speak
At the funeral of a friend
He referred to the dates on the tombstone
From the beginning…to the end

He noted that first came the date of birth
And spoke the following date with tears,
But he said what mattered most of all
Was the dash between those years

For that dash represents all the time
That they spent alive on earth.
And now only those who loved them
Know what that little line is worth

For it matters not, how much we own,
The cars…the house…the cash.
What matters is how we live and love
And how we spend our dash.

So, think about this long and hard.
Are there things you’d like to change?
For you never know how much time is left
That can still be rearranged.

If we could just slow down enough
To consider what’s true and real
And always try to understand
The way other people feel.

And be less quick to anger
And show appreciation more
And love the people in our lives
Like we’ve never loved before.

If we treat each other with respect
And more often wear a smile,
Remembering this special dash
Might only last a little while

So, when your eulogy is being read
With your life’s actions to rehash…
Would you be proud of the things they say
About how you spent YOUR dash?
Came across this poem in a poetry box

A limb has fallen from the family tree,
I keep hearing a voice
Grieve not for me.
Remember the best times
The laughter, the song,
The good life
I lived, while I was strong..
Continue my heritage,
I’m counting on you.
Keep smiling and you will see,
The sun shining through.
My mind is at ease,
My soul is at rest,
Remembering all of you,
I truly was blessed.
Continue traditions,
No matter how small,
Go on with your life,
Don’t worry about falls.

So keep up your chin,
Until the day comes,
When we are together again.

Charlie, we are sad to hear the news of Val’s passing. You and the Dwyer family are in our thoughts. Rest in peace Val

To my dear cousins, to Charlie and the Maloney family, and to Val’s BFFs (you know who you are): Val had the biggest of hearts. In better days; she always left you feeling happier than she found you; likely more informed and definitely with a better perspective if you were having a bad day.

She was a rock for you – her family, and many others as well.

Sweet, kind, funny, loyal, intelligent, self-effacing and generous to a fault.

Her bright light tragically grew dim, then went out-despite courageous attempts by all of you to keep her light shining.

I am holding you ALL so very close to my broken heart. God Bless each and every one of you ????.

Godspeed Val ????????????

My thoughts and prayers go out to All those who loved her she will be missed by all who knew her
All my love Tom Power

To Pat and your entire family, I am truly, truly sorry to hear of Val’s passing. I worked with her for many years and truly admired her professionalism and work ethic as she protected and cared for us police officers day in and day out. She had a heart of gold and a very calm way about her. Please accept my sincere condolences.

My heart aches for all of you . Val was indeed the meaning of the words kind and loving . She will be missed by many . I will always remember her with that beautiful smile . Fly with the angles sweet Val .

A beautiful angel gone way too soon – now she is amongst the angels and I feel sure is embraced in Aunt Mary and Uncle Gerry’s arms. As for the mental illness – she will no longer have to deal with the demons of that dreadful disease. You are absolutely right – it is not recognized enough – still has stigma attached to it – we deal with it in our family every day and it is the hardest thing in the world to do. All family can do is be there, listen, support, love, help educate, and don’t ever give up on them – we haven’t and never will. Your family is strong and close as ours is – all of you have done everything you could have for Val – your mom and dad would be so proud of you – you guys need to rest easy now and take comfort in knowing Aunt Mary and Uncle Gerry will take care of her from here on. Sending an abundance of love and support to each and everyone of you especially Charlie. XOXO Gert & Murray

Our hearts are breaking at the loss of our beloved Aunt Val. Her door was always open and she loved us all unconditionally. A piece of her will be with us as we learn to live without her.
