On Saturday, March 27th, Winnifred Joan Broderick passed away at home. She was 88 years of age. Winnie is pre-deceased by her husband William Broderick and her mother and father, Stella Barbour (Hill) and Edward Barbour. Her daughter Carol (Russell), and her son David (Jennifer) are deeply saddened by her passing. She will also be missed by her brothers Wayne (Molly), George, and Tom (Ruby), her sister Beatrice Schinagl (Franz), and her many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

Winnie (known informally as Nin) started working at CN Railway as a young lady fresh out of clerical school. While at CN she met many lifelong friends as well as her fortunate soon-to-be husband, Bill. Soon after marriage she and Bill settled down in a quiet St John’s neighborhood and had two children to whom she devoted exceptional amounts of time, love, and wisdom. But this caring extended to all who knew her. Nin was viewed by many of her children’s friends as a second mother, such was the tremendous kindness she displayed without the slightest effort. Of course, no description of Winnie would be complete without a nod to her inborn musical talent, as evidenced by her soft and beautiful singing voice as well as the delicate, moving way in which she could play the piano. As much as her love was felt by us, so too is her loss. But in the wake of that loss lies a better, more caring world for those who were lucky enough to know her.

The family thanks the Community Health and Palliative Care teams for their compassion and help during Winnifred’s illness. Extra special thanks to community nurse Lori Metcalfe and home support worker Destiny.

Cremation has taken place. Visitation and a funeral service will be held at Carnell’s this week, but due to COVID-19 restrictions, numbers are limited. If you would like to attend, please contact David or Carol. To send a message of condolence, please visit www.carnells.com.
