Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of a dear husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Winston Frederick Summers on Monday, May 25, 2020 at the age of 78.  Winston passed away peacefully at the Leonard A. Miller Centre in Palliative Care surrounded by his loving family after a lengthy illness.  Predeceased by his parents Frederick and Margaret Summers, and his sisters Lucy (David) and Lorraine (Don).  Leaving to mourn his beloved wife and best friend of 60 years Joan (nee Mercer); his two children Reg (Sharon) and Jeanette (David); two grandchildren Samantha (Samuel) and Kelsey; and darling great granddaughter Scarlett Rose. Also left with fond memories is a large circle of family and friends.

The family would like to send a special thank you to Dr. Roger Butler and his staff, especially Jennifer Williams, the Palliative Care Unit, St. Luke’s Day Program, Greg Healey, James Drover and the staff at Rosemore who were so kind in his final days.

Due to the current public health concerns of Covid-19, a private family service will take place.  A memorial service and interment will be announced at a later date.  In lieu of flowers donations gratefully accepted to Heart and Stroke Association or Alzheimer’s Society.

A Father leaves his mark in the world through the love he gives his family.

Mrs. Summers, Jeanette and Reg, you’re in my thoughts and prayers daily, and I understand the void created by Mr. Summers’ passing. What a gentleman. He always showed a genuine interest for the people in his company and in my children when any of them were in his company over the years. Of course, one of his favorite topics revolved around rowing in the Regatta. I have many warm memories. I’ll be here to support you in anyway you need. Love and prayers to you and the whole family. xo

My/our hearts are broken for your tremendous loss of Uncle Wince. What a gap it leaves for your family. Wince was one the most generous, loving, spirited men I ever knew. Lots of guys are fathers, but he was a real Dad, Poppy, and Joan’s true love.
Our hope is when he left this life, his new life in heaven began. Each of us will begin that new day some time. I want to think Wince will be there saying “I’ve been waiting for you.” God bless you all. Lots of love from North Carolina.
