Jane was a Newfoundlander by choice. Born in Saint John, New Brunswick, Jane and Barry made their home in St. John’s, Newfoundland finding their many friends at Memorial University and the Royal Newfoundland Regiment in 1965. Jane and Barry raised their family: Heather (Nicki Hall), Andy (Karen Stone) and Kim (Jonathan Richler). Five loving grandchildren kept her laughing: Alexander Mackay, Bridget Mackay, Andrew Mackay, Sam Anthony, and Peter Anthony. Jane’s Rothesay family, including sister Connie Oland and brother Jack Connell of Toronto, will greatly miss their European and Florida travels and annual verandah chats. Jane was very close with her nieces and nephews in Rothesay and Ontario and hoped to see her extended family in Australia.

“Lady Jane” had the most beautiful smile and made friends easily. She had lifelong friends on Diefenbaker Street and Balmoral Place as well as her walking buddies, Bridge Club, and Avalon Stompers square dancing club. Special mention to Jane’s NL friends: Vi, Reine, Gloria, Adele, Fran and Irene and her Rothesay friends: Margie, Minte and Charlotte.

Jane and Barry travelled throughout their 60 years together with many adventures including a cross-Canada camping trip with 3 kids and no air conditioning. Jane loved to dance, read, debate politics and stir the pot. She was feisty, funny and flirty.

Jane passed peacefully away at Pleasant View Towers (PVT), unit 2NE, after six years living with Alzheimer’s. Barry was her constant companion and advocate. The family greatly appreciates the compassion and professionalism of the staff at PVT.

Cremation has taken place. Visitation will take place at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. on Saturday May 8th. A celebration of Jane’s life will take place on Wednesday, May 12th, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. from the Carnell Memorial Chapel. Due to COVID restrictions attendance is limited. To Barry and family, I want to extend my deepest sympathy and condolence on the passing of your dear wife. I feel and understand your pain as my wife passed away 5 months ago. My brother Ken Kavanagh advised me of your wife’s passing.. Like my brother Ken, I also had a great respect for you. Our Mom passed away 4 years ago after 5 years in a home with Dementia and it was difficult to deal with. However, add COVID 19 and I can only imagine your pain, stress and suffering in the last year. Take care. Rod Kavanagh

To Barry, Heather, Andy and Kim and all of Jane’s extended family, I want to offer my sincerest condolence on the passing of Jane..
I only met Jane once some 20 years ago when she and Barry had attended my 50th birthday celebrations. I had only known Barry through the Royal NL Regiment. However, my family were so aware of my esteem and respect for Barry as a leader and mentor, they invited him to the celebrations.
I remember Jane vividly. As she and Barry left the gathering, she shook my hand, offered birthday celebrations and then candidly asked: “So Ken, tell me what it is that you see in Barry to have him invited to this milestone in your life?” it wasn’t that she was doubting Barry’s qualities but just a curiosity in knowing what this strange fella from Bell Island saw in her husband!” We had a lovely private conversation for several minutes as I expounded on Major Mackay’s (his rank when I worked with him) exceptional leadership qualities. I could tell then that Jane was an outgoing, kind, gentle loving woman.
While I know this is a very difficult time, it is obvious that Jane was blessed with a loving and strong family,, a wide and loyal network of close friends and a vault of happy and adventurous memories to remember her by.
May you find peace and love in those memories.
Ken Kavanagh

Rasul joins me in sending sincere condolences on Janes’s passing. Many years ago, we had a monthly lunch date with two other good friends which unfortunately we discontinued when two of them moved away. She was so proud of her family, sharing her joy in her children and grandchildren and their achievements. May the memories of the life you shared bring you comfort.
