Amy Eileen Augusta Constable Wicks (nee Gill)

April 3, 1936 to December 22, 2016

Obituary

Born April 3, 1936, entered into eternal rest on December 22, 2016, with strength and dignity, and in the arms of her loving husband, best friend and soul mate, Lloyd, retired judge.

After high school in Botwood, Eileen pursued a brief career as a Lab and X Ray Technician at the Botwood Cottage Hospital. Before long she and Lloyd started their family and Eileen proved to be a model Wife, Mother, and Grandmother, roles she took seriously.  Her motto was always to do your best with the resources and knowledge available at the time.  Through thick and thin she was always there, a supporter, a listener, an advisor, a protector and a mentor.  Her cooking skills delighted family and visitors alike as she loved to try adventurous and difficult recipes.  She also found time to pursue her love of crafting, sewing, knitting, crocheting and whatever else she could find to demonstrate her artistic flair while still fulfilling basic family needs.

Eileen was the co-ordinator of the family’s many moves to various communities in Newfoundland over the years.  She was always up to the task, and quite proficient at enabling the family to settle, grow and prosper at each juncture. From Botwood, to St. John’s, Wabush, Port aux Basques, Clarenville, Stephenville and finally back to St. John’s, she embraced each move as an opportunity for the family to learn and grow. In each town, she volunteered for numerous charitable organizations to give back in the places she called home. Many lifelong friendships were formed and had an indelible influence on Eileen and the family.

Predeceased by her parents, Alex and Elizabeth Gill, and brothers, Jim, Jake, Peter and Tom, and two sisters, Onie and Frances.

Leaving to mourn her devoted husband of 59 years, Lloyd; her son Brad (Donna), grandchildren Hilary, Spencer and Justin; daughter Valerie (Fraser), grandchildren Charlotte and Nathan Genge; daughter Pamela and grandchildren Matthew, Alexandra and Victoria Stanford; daughter Sandra (Peter) and grandchildren  Nicholas and Beth Hoyles; and her sister Vera Blagg (Dave).

Funeral arrangements entrusted to Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road with visitation on Friday, December 23rd, 2016 from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm.

Lloyd and family. Being part of the extended Gill family, I have fond memories of Eileen as I visited the Gill home on many occasions as a young boy with my mother Mabel and Aunt Maude and Uncle Bert. I remember too, when you first arrived on the scene and your contribution to our church and community. As a lay minister, Uncle Alex often referred to his future son-in-law as Canon Wicks. We give thanks for your long life together and may the peace that passes all understanding be yours at this time as you mourn the loss of Eileen and take comfort in knowing she is in the nearer presence and higher service of our Lord. Blessings always. Don and Ruth Brett

Lloyd, Brad and family,
We are sorry to learn of Eileen’s passing. Our memories of Eileen are that of a very proud and devoted wife, a mother who was quick to express her joy and celebration of the many achievements of each of her children, a hostess of skillful class and charm, a home maker who brought love to all those who shared the space that she made into a home. Eileen was effectively at home in the social sessions of both the national Judges meetings and those provincial sessions when Lloyd served as
President! Ella and I recall that one of first dates was as a guest of Lloyd and Eileen! Please accept our condolences and may Eileen rest in peace!
