David Allen Wright

November 15, 1973 to May 16, 2020

Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden loss of our cherished dad, husband, son and brother, David Allen Wright, on May 16, 2020, at the age of 46 years.

David will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Kendra; two awesome sons: Owen and Elliot; parents: Allen and Marilyn (Beehan) Wright; sister, Andrea (Vince Cooper) and nephews, Matthew and William; brother, Andrew (Laura Strong) and nieces, Lauren and Ella; aunts: Marguerite (Robert Peddigrew), Patricia (Fred Hawksley), Louise (Paul Skirving), Karen (Jim Beehan, deceased), Lorraine Babstock, Marion Bartlett, Barbara Holmes (Eldred), Juanita Vidito; uncle, Gordon Wright (Irene); their families; a large circle of relatives; and lifelong friends.

David also leaves behind his family in PEI, a place he considered his second home. Remembered by parents-in-law: Irene MacDonald and Charles (Jean) MacDonald; sister-in-law, Karla (Patrick) McCardle; nephew, Keegan; and niece, Renée, as well as his extended Ellis, MacLauchlan, and MacDonald families.

David was born on November 15, 1973, in Labrador City. He grew up in St. John’s and attended St. Paul’s and Holy Heart schools.  He graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering from Memorial University in 1998, at which point he received the legendary iron ring. David wore his ring with pride which was a symbol of the work hard/play hard attitude he shared with his Class of ’98 as well as his commitment to his profession, colleagues, and employers.

Those who knew David would describe him as quiet, smart, witty, and unassuming. If you asked David, he would simply say that he was “awesome at being Dave”. He loved nothing more than to spend time with Kendra, Owen and Elliot. David spent many hours watching his boys playing sports, particularly hockey, and enjoyed the tight fraternity of hockey dads. He was a talented musician who enjoyed jamming in the basement with his bandmates in The Low Ceilings as they planned their rise to fame.  He also had a passion for Formula 1 racing, the Florida sunshine, his road bike “Black Betty”, vintage t-shirts, and cottage life in Stanhope, PEI.

A Celebration of David’s Life will be planned at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation of Canada. To send a message of condolence please visit www.carnells.com.

Jake and Joan

Kendra, I feel so fortunate to have had Dave as a friend, classmate, roommate and coworker over the years. When you go through school with someone it is often hard to picture each other as anything other than the work hard /play hard 20 somethings we once were. In more recent years I also saw Dave’s integrity at work and dedication to his family define the kind of person he was.

Al and Marilyn,
I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your son David. My condolences to you and your family as you mourn his loss. My thoughts and prayers are with you at this time.

I was so very sorry to hear of Dave’s passing. I knew Dave in High School. He was exceptionally sweet and I have very fond memories of him. Reading these condolences, it is clear that he made a big impact on many people. It is also clear that he had a beautiful life with Kendra and the kids. To Kendra and his entire family: my deepest condolences.

Kendra, Owen, Elliott & Family,
I was deeply saddened to learn of Dave’s sudden passing. I knew Dave from High School and University days and never tired of his satirical wit & dry humour. We last spoke at Andrew & Laura’s wedding and I’m so thankful we were able to reconnect.
My sincere condolences to you and the family during this difficult time.

Kendra, Elliot, Owen and all of Dave’s family, I am so sorry for your sudden loss. Dave was an amazing person and I always looked up to him. He was a man of integrity and treated everyone with respect. Smart, witty, and just a pleasure to be around. He was my coworker and boss for many years, but I was most proud to call him my friend.

Gord and I would like to extend our deepest condolences to you and your family at this most difficult time. May the memories of David give you strength and peace in the days ahead.

Deepeist condolences to Allen, Marilyn and family at this difficult time

Deepest condolences for your sudden loss. I came to know Dave during High School and University and was known to pop in for a visit while he was on various work terms in Ottawa and Calgary. Here is one of my favorite Dave-isms. Week in and week out during a MUN physics lab Dave would, without fail, confirm the spelling of his lab partner’s last name … One ‘L’, Two ‘T’s, no ‘E’. The no ‘E’ has always cracked me up. I use it to this day whenever anyone asks how you spell Philpott. No one ever gets the joke but I get a little chuckle to myself thanks to Dave. Dave, you will be missed.

Tony Philpott

I was deeply saddened to hear that your beloved David had passed away. I can see from reading your beautiful tribute to him that his life was full of love and joy, and I know all of his family and friends will miss him terribly.
My sincere condolences.
Cece Ryan Knudsen

Marilyn, Allen and Family,

Our very deepest condolences on the passing of your dear son. We are sure you have very cherished memories of David and our thoughts and prayers are with you at this time.

I was deeply saddened to hear of Dave’s passing. Growing up, I knew who Dave was but only because I played hockey with his brother Andrew. Dave was five years older than me, so at that stage of life, I don’t think we ever would have interacted. It was only many years later, when both Dave and I were working on the Lower Churchill Project that we actually spoke for the first time!

I saw Dave in the halls at work one day and knew instantly that it was Dave Wright. He hadn’t changed since we were kids at St. Paul’s. He didn’t recognize me but as soon as I introduced myself and elaborated on my family (Dave had known my older brother quite well) he knew exactly who I was and we launched into a long discussion and a few laughs about the old neighborhood.

After that, Dave and I had many, many chats in the halls at work, often about work but just as much about what was going on in own lives and families. Dave was a great guy to talk to. He was always level headed and keen to hear how your day was going. His calm demeanor was a welcomed respite in a work place were political pressures were a present and heavy load.

We often talked of hockey and many times over these last few years, I would run into Dave at the hockey rink. He would be there, stalwart in his position at the glass, watching his boys play hockey. I’d be dragging my goalie gear behind me, so it was a nice break to drop that stuff for a minute and chat to Dave. It would have been fun to have actually played a game with Dave at some point.

Both Dave and I moved on from the project but continued to bump into each other at various work functions. It was always the same: a good chat, with a bit of focus on work as well as making time for a few laughs. I always looked forward to running into Dave and I consider Dave to have been a great friend of mine.

My deepest condolences to Dave’s family. I will miss Dave immensely both for the work place chats and chance encounters at the hockey rinks. Thanks for being a great friend Dave. I’ll be sure to keep my stick on the ice.

Tim Grant

Kendra, Owen, Elliot, Mr and Mrs Wright and family,

We are devastated by David’s passing. Dave was nothing but a force of positivity in our lives. From taking turns driving the kids back-and-forth to the rink or field to pre- and postgame socials and trips, he was a dedicated and loving father and husband and true friend. We all want our children to have great friends but when you form a bond with their parents it’s a special bonus.

Since the first game of novice that our sons, Ronan and Owen played together, we had become exceptional friends and enjoyed many great times over the years. Dave was soft spoken, and had a great dry sense of humor. He loved watching his kids grow on and off the ice. Dave spent many a weekend on great hockey trips with a close-knit parent group who drove together, ate together, had a few drinks, and everyone loved it when Dave pulled out the guitar for some late night performances. He was the first one up the next day completing his work at the nearest coffee shop. He was a true professional.

Summers were spent watching soccer and baseball and planning out our next adventures for the fall. The rinks and fields won’t be the same without him. We have only happy and loving memories . One of our fondest memories occurred a recent trip while out to dinner after a day at the rink. The night was filled with side splitting and uncontrollable laughter and ended with listening to an incredible band. Dave was in his element. The evening could not have been better.

Owen and Elliot, you have grown into wonderful young men under your parent’s guidance and you are very lucky to have such an incredible mother to continue your father’s legacy. We were very fortunate to have had Dave in our lives. His memory will never be forgotten and he will be dearly missed. There will never be a game or a trip that Dave is not with us.

Shawn, Diane, Ronan, Maya and Aaron

Dave and I formed a strong friendship during our time together in Ottawa and Calgary, Dave was someone you could always count on and a true buddy. To Dave’s family my sincere condolences to you all. Like so many I was shocked and saddened to hear of Dave’s sudden passing. I worked with Dave at the Bowring Building for many years, and it was a pleasure. Dave was easy to get along with, a good worker and always extremely professional. Dave may you rest in peace

My condolences to all of Dave’s family and closest friends. Dave was a great mentor to me, patient, kind, and always quick with a joke. He gave me an opportunity to pursue the kind of career I wanted and I’ll always be thankful to him for that. He was a great boss and a better friend, and I will miss him.

Kendra, Elliot, and Owen,
I worked with Dave both at KBR/PSN and again on Muskrat Falls. He was a gentle giant, a dedicated worker and a super family man and I held in high regard for all of those qualities. Kendra and family, Cousin Allen and Marilyn,

Our sincere condolences to all for your loss.. While we did not have the privilege of getting to know David there is no doubt from the comments of others that he enriched the lives of all who did have that privilege. So sad that you had to lose him at such a young age. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. May he rest in peace.

Kendra,
So sorry to hear of Dave’s sudden passing. My deepest condolences to you and your boys. Keeping you in my thoughts and prayers during this difficult journey. Take care of each other.

I cannot even express the shock and sadness I felt when I heard of Dave’s passing. I graduated engineering with Dave and there are many great memories of late nights studying in our little classroom and Dave’s dry, sarcastic humour kept us laughing. Then there were late nights downtown where Dave was usually the reserved one until the right song came on and he would pull out his one dance move. I remember when he returned from a work term telling us about this girl he met. Just from the smirk on his face when we tried to get details on his new long distance girlfriend you could tell how much he thought of you Kendra. There was no doubt that he had met the one person he would spend his life with. Kendra, I think we only met a few times but please know how sorry I am that you and your boys had to lose him so soon. You all deserved so much more time together. Knowing what a wonderful, kind, respectful person that he was, I know what a profound loss it is. Please know that I am thinking of you all at this difficult time.

Allen and Marilyn please accept our condolences and know that you are in our prayers and thoughts.

Kendra, Owen and Elliot — David was my “cool cousin “. We hung out together during long vacations in Newfoundland or Nova Scotia. We went on cycling adventures around his Saint John neighborhood. He introduced me to Run DMC. We attended our first concert together – WITHOUT our PARENTS – Huey Lewis and the News. We shared a love of music. He was smart, witty, an athlete and in many ways a prototype for the qualities I would look for in future friendships. Unfortunately, it’s only after he’s suddenly gone that I wish I’d spent more time with him as an adult. I’m so sorry for your loss. I sincerely hope we are able to connect with you more often going forward. Lots of love.

Kendra, our deepest condolences to you, Owen and Elliott. We will always remember Dave as a proud hockey dad. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all and if there is anything that you need please reach out to us. Keep the wonderful, happy memories of Dave close to your hearts as they will bring you peace in the days ahead.

Allen and Marilyn, our thoughts and prayers are with you on the passing of your son. It has to be the most devastating time in a parent’s life. May you find peace in the memories you have and the time you spend with his family.
Diane and Kevin

Paul and David Fisher.

Dear Kendra, Owen and Elliot
A beautiful tribute. I always enjoyed the rinkside and field chats. He was indeed very smart and witty, and while unassuming, clearly had immense pride and joy in his family. Please find comfort in all of these wonderful stories and words being shared by friends and colleagues. I also absolutely loved jamming with Dave – his creative side came out flying! Keep on rockin’ in the free world, Dave. You will be sorely missed. Our boys also send their thoughts and condolences to you all. Take care, Kendra, Owen and Elliot.

Sincerest condolences to Kendra, Owen, Elliot, and family/friends. I always enjoyed chatting with Dave at the rink and at the soccer field. His love for the boys and the games was always apparent and he was the model of what every sports parent should be..

I was shocked to hear of Dave’s passing and still can’t believe it. He was truly a great friend and overall just a really great guy. He had such a sense of humour that even when struggling through exams or busy times in Engineering he was always able to have a laugh and make us all laugh. We shared some good times together and I have a lot of very fond memories. My sincere condolences to all of Dave’s family, he will be in my heart forever and will be the subject of many stories to my kids for many years to come.

Sending my deepest condolences to Dave’s family. I was shocked and saddened to hear of his passing. I graduated fr Mech Eng with Dave in 1998. His obituary describes the Dave I knew back then. I saw Dave and Kendra and children on the Argentina Ferry five years ago while I was bringing my family home for summer vacation. It was so good to see Dave and catch up. That memory is more special now. Love to you all.

Kendra, my sincere condolences to you, the boys and all the family. I was so very shocked and saddened to hear of Dave’s sudden passing. I still find it hard to believe or understand. I worked closely with Dave at Wood Group for about 6 years in the mechanical group, and it was a pleasure. Dave was easy to get along with, very sociable, a good worker and always professional. We shared some good times out of the office also. I have a nice memento of Dave in my shed. An “ASSMAN” license plate that he brought back from a trip to New York that he gave me for my 50th birthday. We both enjoyed a few laughs about Seinfeld. “Giddy-Up” Dave. May you rest in peace buddy!

Great guy taken way to early. Sincere condolences Kendra, Owen, Elliot and extended family.

We are so very sorry for your heartbreaking and unexpected loss. Although we didn’t know Dave well, it was easy to see how much he loved watching his boys play hockey. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Kendra, Andrew and families,
We are so very sorry for your loss. We will always remember David. I‘m so glad he came into my life as a friend and as a musician. I’m so honoured to have played music with him. He was a rock star!

I worked with Dave on many Mechanical Vendor packages at Woodgroup back in the day as part of Document Control. .Dave was always there to have a chat, a joke and laugh, but remained professional. Dave was great to work with whether it be getting answers to questions I had or support I needed from him to achieve our goals. Dave was a great guy, Rest Easy Dave

So sorry for your loss. Sincere condolences to David’s family. He was such a great, respectful and smart guy. He will be missed.

As a cousin “from away” I didn’t know David or his family well, but I do have wonderful memories of the times we did spend together. We were deeply shocked and saddened by his passing and our thoughts and prayers go out to Kendra, the boys, and the extended family.

Kathy and family.

Our thoughts are with the entire family. It was a pleasure meeting David and getting to know him through the power of music. Take care everyone

Dave and I worked together in the early 2000’s as part of the instrumentation group at KBR. Dave’s always been dedicated to his field and unwavering in his integrity. Deepest condolences to Kendra Owen and Elliot and all your families. He is to be missed for sure. We used to have team building golf days back then and Dave earned the nickname “Big Wheels” in our little group (his golf cart had exceptionally large wheels). Cheers to a great man.

Kendra,
I am very sorry for your loss and my thoughts are with you and your family. I hope friends, family and good memories help you through this time.

Kendra – I was so sorry to hear of your loss. Rely on those around you to help you through this, including your Department of Justice family. Please take good care. Jackie Brazil.

I was shocked and deeply saddened by the news about Dave. I had worked with Dave several times over the years, and I considered him to be more than a co-worker, but also a friend. Dave was a thoughtful, friendly, considered and exceptionally competent individual. I never had the opportunity to meet Kendra, Owen or Elliot, but Dave did mention you often. I hope that there is some solace in the fact that your husband and Dad was a wonderful, well liked man.

Kendra, Owen and Elliot I am so sorry for your loss.
I hope you can take some comfort from the fact that he was so well loved and had such an amazing life with you.

A cherished friend. Hoping we can jam once more on that big stage in the sky.

Allen and Marilyn sorry to hear of David’s passing. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this time.

Kendra, this tribute certainly echoes all the stories you shared of your life with Dave, Owen and Elliott. My heart is breaking for you and I am sending you my love and deepest condolences. I hope your memories bring comfort during this sad time. Take care, my friend????

I was shocked and saddened to hear of Dave’s passing. I grew up with Dave and we attended same schools and played various sports together. Great form on the tennis court but lousy serve.

Allen, Marilyn, Andrea and Andrew thoughts are with you. I have never met Kendra or sons Owen and Elliot but I can tell you your dad was a good man and well liked by schoolmates and teammates throughout. The ladies loved him as well, might have been the sunglasses he always wore.

I’m sure you will get through this challenging time and remember the good times.

Allan, Marilyn, Andrea, Andrew, Kendra and families,
Our hearts ache for your loss. Such a beautiful tribute to a wonderful man. Wishing you as much peace as possible during this difficult time.
