Passed peacefully surrounded by family at the Health Sciences Centre on May 24, 2021 at the age of 78. Predeceased by his parents Albert and Annie Higgins; brothers Ernie and Alfred; parents in-law Thos and Nell Knox. Left with a lifetime of memories his wife Angela, children David (Sarah), Faren (Kenny), Rebecca (Jesse); grandchild Hunter and grand fur-babies Loca and Piper; sister Gladys (Tom), sister-in-law Elsie, and a large circle of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. After a long career driving buses for CN, he transitioned to school bus driver where he made a lasting impression on students and teachers alike. “Mr. Higgins” will be remembered for his teasing sense of humour and his white hair in and around the stores and community of Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s. The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to Paul Adams for his friendship and support, as well as the nursing teams at 5NA and 4NA for their care and compassion during Don’s stay. Cremation has taken place and a visitation and funeral service will be held at a later date once COVID restrictions have lifted. In lieu of flowers, donations in Don’s memory may be made to the Kids Eat Smart Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador https://www.kidseatsmart.ca/, or a charity of one’s choice.

Mr. Higgins was certainly a cheerful presence in the neighborhood, and it feels quite strange to know we won’t be seeing him out and around. Sorry to hear of Don’s passing. I had the pleasure of meeting Don back in the early 70’s when he drove for CN. He stopped regularly at our place in Holyrood on the TCH for passengers and a quick coffee to go .

Some of my fondest memories of Mr. Higgins were from when I was a small child, in primary school. David and I grew up together and were in the same class. On field trips, Mr. Higgins always volunteered and I was always lucky enough to be picked to be in his group. He has a teasing sense of humor and was always good for a chuckle, most definitely the fun parent. This never changed throughout the years. He always greeted me with a smile and a sarcastic comment whenever I seen him, and it was always a pleasure. He will be greatly missed. Sending much love strength and prayers to David, Faren, Rebecca and most of all Angela during this devastating time. May he rest peacefully.
