Dr. David Severs

December 15, 1928 to July 16, 2021

Obituary

On Friday, July 16, 2021, Dr. David Severs peacefully passed away at home in the company of loving family. He was 92. David was predeceased by his wife Bunty.

Leaving with wonderful memories: Children Anne (Raed), Richard (Debbie), Bill (Diane), Kit (Rod), Jane (Bill), Jill (Rami), and Elona (Alan); grandchildren Elona, Jeffrey, Amina, Gavin and Amanda; and great-grandson Saleh.

David was born on December 15, 1928 in Chester, England. He served the people of Newfoundland and Labrador as Chief Medical Health Officer until his retirement in 1986. He will forever be remembered as the man who put vitamin C in Carnation Milk. A voracious and life-long learner, David was master of ancient Greek and Latin, spoke French fluently, and dabbled in Russian and Arabic. To the continual horror of his children, David possessed zero fashion sense. He loved the natural world (most especially his large garden and all the creatures that resided in it), sweat pants, and a good hot curry. He will be sadly missed by his family and all who knew him as friend, neighbour and colleague.

The family is forever grateful to Bill, who lived with Dad and cared for him these last few years, allowing him to remain in his beloved home.

At David’s request, cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation or funeral service.

My friend Richard Croke and I had the pleasure of doing work in Dr. Severs backyard a few years ago. I thought his backyard was amazing and natural. As a matter of fact he gave me a corn flower which I planted in my backyard. My wife and I always referred to it as “Dr. Severs”. He was such a fine man . We certainly enjoyed doing work for him. My wife who worked with Bunty, Dr. Sever’s wife, at St. Clares Hospital, had the highest praise for her.

Sending sincere condolences to the family of Doctor Severs. I worked with him in the department of Health for many years. He was a lovely man, well respected, with a dry sense of humour. May he Rest In Peace.

Another of the old Berteau Avenue crowd is gone! It really was a little village when we were all young. Sympathies to all of you in the loss of your Dad.

So sorry to hear of your father’s passing. He certainly had an interesting life. I hope you guys are all healthy and doing well.
Thinking of you

Jane and Family,
So sorry for your loss. I met Dr. Severs only once and was impressed by his professionalism and gentlemanly manner. Take care in the difficult days of saying goodbye. JPA

Please accept my sincerest condolences on the passing of your father. I worked in Health when he was the MOH. He was a great MOH and very sociable and well liked by his staff. My lasting impression of him was standing on his head unassisted. A truly great fellow. Rest in Peace , Dr. Severs.

Kit and Family, Sorry for your loss, no doubt he was a great Dad. May he rest in peace and be rewarded for all he gave to this province.

Our condolences to Jane and family on the passing of your Dad. From Darryl, Cindy,Josh and Olivia Carey
