Dr. Dzintra Fernandez (neé Parums)

January 9, 1941 to February 13, 2018

Obituary

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Dzintra Fernandez (neé Parums) on Tuesday, February 13, 2018. Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories of a beautiful, brilliant matriarch are her three daughters: Bridget and her partner, Matt, Anahata and her husband, Tim, and Angela; along with her two granddaughters: Nevé age 12, and Isabel age 9. Dzintra, a pioneer in her field, was a pathologist at Memorial University’s Faculty of Medicine and the Health Sciences Centre for three decades before retiring in 2007. Born in Latvia in 1941, Dzintra’s nuclear family found their way through post war Europe to safely settle in England where she grew up with her three siblings George, Andy and Dinah all of whom have survived her. Dzintra attended medical school in Sheffield where she met and married Dr. Peter Giles Fernandez, who sadly predeceased her on October 25, 2017. Resilient, optimistic and insightful, Dzintra will be dearly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her. Cremation has taken place. Relatives and friends may visit the family at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, on Sunday, February 18 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral service to honor Dzintra’s life will be held at the Carnell Memorial Chapel on Monday, February 19 at 2:00 pm.  A private inurnment will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations in Dzintra’s memory may be made to the Health Care Foundation in support of Neurology Services.

Bridget, Karen and Angela,
You do not know me but I remember all of you as Dzintra lived in the same apartment building on Nun’s Island in Montreal. We used to chat often and I learnt so much
from her. She was such an unassuming and gentle person.
I knew she was working at Memorial University and managed to contact her and chat with her about all of you.
I have just came across her obituary as I was thinking of contacting her again thinking she must have retired.
My belated but sincere condolences.
I hope I am not causing you more grief by writing this to you. at this time…..soon after Mother’s Day. Do forgive me if I am.
Wishing you peace as you journey forward in your grief.

Ahna, Bridget and Angela…..
My deepest sympathy to all of you, to Tim and your daughters, and to Matt as well, on your mom’s passing. I can only imagine how difficult it must be for all of you, to lose your mom so soon after your dad’s passing. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.

I only had the pleasure of meeting your mom after your dad’s passing, but her determination and the love and compassion she had for all of you was very clear. I knew your dad much better and his pride, in each one of you, and in your respective accomplishments, came up in almost every one of our discussions. The best way to honor them both is for you to be there for each other, in support, and to continue the family traditions that meant so much to them and created the wonderful memories that you’ll treasure the rest of your lives.

Remember that they may be gone, physically, but will always be with you in spirit. Remembering their great love and support for each one of you will help you through the difficult days ahead.

May God bless you all during this very difficult time.

Julius

Dear Bridget and family
Your Mom was a very special person. She will be sadly missed but leaves behind warm memories of her gentle but effective ways that made working with her at the medical school such a joy for me and so many others. Thinking of you with sincere condolences,

Oh Bridget,

I’m so terribly sorry to hear of your mother’s passing. I do understand that she hadn’t been feeling well of late and for a woman as fit and vital as Dzintra, this must have been dreadfully frustrating. For that reason, if it’s any consolation, perhaps her departure is a deliverance for her, although most certainly a devastation for you, your sisters and family.

I will miss seeing her slight form, walking briskly along Circular on her way to you, her determination evident, no matter the weather! All of us, your neighbours, were very much the richer for having known Dzintra, for having enjoyed her brilliant conversation and for having her model as the calm, brilliant woman and strong loving mother that she was. Please accept our deepest sympathies.

Love,
Renée and Paul Antle

Dear Bridget and family, I am so happy I had a chance to meet your Mother and Father before they left this plane of existence. I am sorry their passing was very close together – it isn’t easy to understand the world as you knew it has changed yet again so soon. We hope you and your family can take sometime to celebrate your beautiful Mother’s life and it will bring you comfort and wonderful memories that will be with you always.
