Passed peacefully away in the presence of his family at the Health Sciences Center, St. John’s, NL on January 25, 2021, John Gilbert Hillier in his 95th year.  He was born and raised in Lamaline, NL.  He moved to the Avalon Peninsula and built his home in Dunville, where he married Marjorie Coombs from Cartwright, Labrador, and raised their family.  He later moved to Masonic Park, St. John’s and for the past ten years resided at the Admirals Coast Retirement Centre in Kelligrews, NL.

A man of strong Anglican faith, he gave generously of his time and talents to his church and his community.    He loved the outdoors and enjoyed moose hunting, fishing, berry picking, skidooing and vegetable gardening.   He enjoyed music, dancing, and loved telling stories while acting them out with his quick wit and a twinkle in his eye.  He dearly treasured his family and spending time with them.

Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories are his children Paul (Elaine) Hillier, Glenda Tapp, John (Dana) Hillier; dearly-loved grandchildren Jeremy (Leah), Nancy, Kevin (Stacy), Stephen (Maegan), April (Glen); great-grandchildren Kelsey, Abby, Cameron, John, and Andrew; brothers George (Ethel); Otto (Joy), and Maxwell (June); sisters-in-law Claudette (Dave) Pardy, Charlotte Coombs, Cynthia Coombs, Anita Hillier, Cynthia Hillier, Muriel Hillier, as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Predeceased by his wife Marjorie, parents Clarence and Martha, sisters Olive (Ronald) Barrett, Alma (Dolph) McCarthy, Stella Savoie, Dinah (Lloyd) Dove and brothers Launcelot, Garfield, Reginald, and Clyde; and son-in-law Chesley Tapp.

We are deeply grateful to the staff at Floor 4 South B at the Health Sciences Center for their professional care, kindness, and compassion during Dad’s hospital stay.   Likewise, we extend a sincere thank you to the staff at the Admirals Coast Retirement Centre for the outstanding care and kindness they provided.

Your lamaline buddy

We extend our most sincere condolences to all of Jack’s family on his passing. We have many wonderful memories of visits from Jack and his wife Marjorie here at the Hillier family home in Lamaline, NL. It was always such a pleasure to see him and although he didn’t have the opportunity to visit over the past number of years, we feel that Lamaline and his family home still held a special place in his heart. We listened, with total enjoyment, to the many stories he’d tell about growing up here and he told them with such zest and as his obituary says, with that twinkle in his eyes. God bless all of you and we’re sure Jack is at peace in his heavenly home.

Glenda, Paul and John and the Hillier Family. My deepest sympathy on the passing of Uncle Jack. He was a wonderful man and always had a smile for you.
