Obituary

It is with deep sadness that our family announces the passing of the man we all loved, John K. Nolan, on November 17th, 2019 in his 69th year.  John leaves with love and cherished memories his loving wife of 47 years, Leady (Alethia Pynn) and their two sons and wives C.J. and Andrea, Adam and Sarah.

Poppy loved his six darling Grandchildren more than anything, he was devoted and committed in everything they did.  Nathan, Emma, Sam, Kate, Max and Piper will forever remember their poppy with love.

John will be dearly missed by his brothers and sisters: Joslyn Murphy (Gerald), Maurice Nolan (Frances), Sally Maclachlan (Dan), Sam Nolan (Maggie), Jim Nolan (Jima), Colin Nolan (Wanda), Ramona Nolan (Fox Jones) & Renee Nolan. His sisters-in-law: Myrtle Parsley, Ginny Dunn (Ed), Leslie Reid & Lori Pynn (Cliff).

Predeceased by his parents, Samuel & Mary Nolan, his sister, Ann Marie Nolan, his nephew, Mark Nolan, his parents-in-law, Lewis and Jean Pynn, sisters-in-law, Vivian Pynn & Sis Reid, brothers-in-law Chris Parsley and Ford Ryan.

John leaves behind a great legacy as a prominent businessman in the insurance industry for 50 years.  As the Owner and Chairman of Munn Insurance he was proud of the business he helped build and grow.  He viewed the insurance industry as a people business, and he took pride in the people of the Munn Insurance family who made Munn Insurance the company it is today.

As a community leader he volunteered hundreds of hours as President & Executive member, coach, hockey and soccer dad and mentor to many at Mount Pearl Soccer, Mount Pearl Minor hockey and the Boys & Girls Club.  As a loving family man and wonderful friend, John enjoyed going to his grandchildren’s activities and golfing with friends at Bally Haly (St. John’s) & Stoneybrook (Sarasota).

The Nolan family would like to thank Dr. Paul Jackman, Dr. Joy McCarthy, Dr. Cheryl Hurley and all the staff at the Miller Center Palliative Care unit.  To all of his friends and loved ones who gave him and his family support during his illness, we thank you.

CJ and Adam, I’m so sorry to hear about your dad’s passing. I only met him a few times but it was obvious how much he loved his family. You and your families are in my thoughts and prayers.

Hello Leahy, CJ and Adam,

I am writing you to say how sad I am to hear of John’s passing. My name is Barry Squires and I knew John through the Mount Pearl Soccer Assn. I remember going upto your house on my motorcycle in the mid-1980’s when I was 16 and involved in the Mt Peal Soccer Summer camps. John would just be home from work and would be so happy to see the two little boys running out to the door to greet him.. He would sign some cheques for me and ask me how things were going at the soccer hut. He always had a big smile, time for everyone and was someone I always looked up to and respected.

I wish I could be there to pay my respects for all the time he volunteered, spent with us at the soccer field and just generally being a great guy and role model to a lot of us growing up in Mt Pearl in sports. I am happy to see that a good friend, and fellow soccer player, Paul Jackman, played a role in his care. My sincerest condolences.

All our love, thoughts and prayers are with you. You’re a special family and we are so blessed to be counted among you as friends, and to have shared in the life of Mr. Nolan.

Paul, Melissa and the whole Preston Family

Leady and family, was soo sorry to hear of Sammy’s passing, it was just in June while visiting St.John’s that we had a coffee and spent a nice hour or so reminiscing about Bell Island and how life has been good to both of us. You could tell how proud he was of the boys, and that family meant everything to him. He enjoyed telling me about your golf exploits (the both of you) , he was soo optimistic about the future. He figured that his illness was just a minor set back .

I met John Nolan in 2002, when I first joined the staff at Adjusters Inc. I was intimidated at first, as he had such a commanding presence about him. However over the years, I learned that he was a presence that commanded excellence from his staff so that Munn’s customers could have the best service possible. The intimidation I felt grew into respect. I also found that John had a sense of humor and always made me smile, even in the midst of work chaos. My heart goes out to Mrs. Nolan, CJ and Adam and the rest of the family. Cherish the memories.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, President and staff of the Newfoundland and Labrador Construction Association, we would like to express our heart felt condolences.

His leadership, guidance, support and confidence led me to a most rewarding lifetime of volunteer involvement for which I will remain forever in his debt.

We met at the bowling alley some 45 years ago, two couples who became good friends (mediocre bowlers!) as we bowled together for many years. During those years our children were born and we shared many good times together. As often happens, life took us in different directions but we always knew what was happening in each other lives (thanks to Facebook recently!) and we often reminisce about those times.
We know that you are a strong, loving family and will get through the challenging days ahead as you mourn the loss and celebrate the life of an amazing husband, dad, grandfather and much more to so many people. We wish we could be there to share this time but know that we are holding you in thought and prayer.
Love – Shirley and Henry

I am so sorry to hear about John’s passing. As a fellow Canadian and avid golfer, John and I connected at Stoneybrook and would often compare notes about what we were practicing on the range. He was a very sweet man who I always enjoyed speaking with.
