Obituary

It is with great sadness that the family of Kenneth Dominic Smith announces his peaceful passing at the Health Sciences Centre in St. John’s, NL, surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday, October 5th, 2016 at the age of 64. He will be forever remembered by his beloved wife and soulmate, Joyce, loving daughters Laura, Johanna and Maggie, his precious grandson Kristian, and by his brothers and sisters Tom (Jane) Smith, Alec (Loretta, deceased) Smith, Helen (Leo) Foley, Leo (Gloria) Smith, Mary (Earl) Williams, Fred Smith, Geraldine (Noel) O’Dea, Elaine Smith, and Gerard (Maggie) Smith. Ken will also be dearly missed by his numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and many close friends. He is predeceased by his beloved son Michael, brother Ronald, and parents, James and Bridget Smith. Ken was passionate about the great outdoors, music, literature and the arts. He loved to read and converse about many topics including history and geology. When Ken wasn’t enjoying his land in Mobile, fishing in Bay Bulls, or berry picking in one of his many secret spots, he could be found spending summers with family at Spencer’s Point in Nova Scotia. Those who knew Ken will remember his kind heart, endless patience, honesty and his quick wit. He was a friend to all and would truly do anything for anyone. Although we may not physically have him with us any longer, he will live on in our hearts, in our minds, and through our acts of kindness. Diver, Dad, Poppa, Captain, we love you… Rest in peace. The family will be accepting visitors at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road on Friday, October 7th, 2016 from 6 – 9 pm. A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, October 8th, 2016 at 9:30 am, at the Basilica of St. John the Baptist, with interment to follow in the Belvedere Cemetery for immediate family. Reception details to follow. Flowers gratefully accepted, or donations may be made to the Michael Beecher Smith Heart Award at M.U.N. Sorry to hear of ken’s illness and passing. I remember him from our university days – walking into a room with a ready smile, positive, intelligent, and always, an individual. No doubt, his fine attributes will live on in his children and grandchildren.

May peace be with you..

Dear Joyce & family,

It was a shock to hear of Ken’s passing as he was rallying & such a positive soul. Ken loved his family & being in the natural world. Ken’s kindness is embodied in his decision to pick Chanterelles & send them to John when he heard of his cancer diagnosis. He was a sweet, kind and gentle soul who will remain forever in our hearts.

Dear Joyce & family,
It is a shock to lose Ken as he seemed to be rallying & was such a positive soul. Ken was a very dear man who loved his family, and being in Nature. Ken’s kindness was embodied in his picking Chanterelles & sending them to John when he heard of his cancer diagnosis. Ken was a gentle, kind, sweet soul who will remain forever in our hearts.

It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to our good friend Ken Smith. He lived a life of love and that love overflowed and affected all who knew him; his family and all who were his friends. Ken’s passion for the outdoors and his fascination in the natural world always drew him back to the river, back to the bog for yet another experience. But his love of family was greatest of all. We will miss you in our presence dear Ken but will always carry you in our hearts.

Dear Joyce, Girls and family- I can’t imagine what the past 5 months have been like as you all provided support, encouragement and care to Ken, but I would say that his amazing progress was a testament to your devotion. Ken was one interesting guy – we’ll always remember our trip to St. John’s and the evening we spent together….it seems so many years ago.
May your memories of happy family times brighten the challenging days ahead.
Thinking of you all and sending our sincere condolences.
Lynn & Peter

Ken took delight in so many aspects of life: a piece of arrowhead…or merely some chert; a sublime dessert, or a bowl of berries; a child’s smile or, perhaps, gas. Ken saw the good in everything.

To the Smith Clan,

Surprised & saddened to learn of Ken’s death. May he rest in peace.

To Ken’s family,
I never had the pleasure of meeting or knowing Ken. If he has any of the wonderful attributes of Mary, Leo and Tom he us a wonderful person. Thinking of you all at this time…

The Smith household on Pine Bud was often a second home for me. I knew I was always welcome any time of the day or night. Ken would always greet me with a sincere smile and ask “how are you doing Linda and how are the girls”. He was always incredibley kind and considerate. I’m so happy I was able to spend time with him in the past few months and especially helping him celebrate number 64! My thoughts and prayers are with you Joyce, Laura, Johanna and Maggie. You were amazing with Ken these past few months, you sure made him proud. Blessings to you all.

Our sincere condolences to you Joyce and your family. So sorry for your loss.

My deepest condolences, I’m incredibly grateful for having him be a part of my life.

So sad to hear of your loss. When we visited Ken this summer we were struck by his will to live and the deep love and commitment of you all to be by his side. I looked into his eyes and felt saddened for his struggles but hopeful because he was reaching out, trying to make the connection. Ken was such a kind-hearted, gentle soul. Every time we visited he showed us such warmth, love & generosity and he always shared his stash of raspberries. He will be sadly missed.

Rest easy Diver.

To Kens (Divers) family we offer our sincerest condolences. A standout memory of Ken for me was when we were teenagers and I met him by Bill Houlihans store riding a new Gold colored Coaster Brake Bike.
Rest in Peace

RIP Diver, You will be missed
