My deepest condolences.
I had the pleasure of knowing Ken both personally and professionally particularly in the 90’s while we were both at Legal Aid. We shared many good times and laughs. I will always consider knowing him to have been a gift in my life.
Take care,
Bruce Short

The staff at the RNC Public Complaints Commission send their sincere condolences to all who loved and will mourn Ken’s loss. For many years, he provided intelligent legal counsel to this Commission, and successfully carried many difficult briefs through the Courts on our behalf. We thank him, and will miss his humour and insight. He was a brave man, and an example for us all. Rest in Peace, Ken.

Ken was my principal when I articled at MWHS in 2009-2010. I will always remember him as smart and witty, competitive and confident, and above all else, incredibly kind. I know he will be dearly missed. My sincerest condolences to his family, friends and colleagues. Ken was truly one of a kind.

Mr. and Mrs. Jerrett, I have many fond memories of myself and Kenneth picking on each other as kids, he was always a good friend. We are thinking of you at this difficult time.

We were saddened to hear of your loss. When I saw Kenneth as a child he was bright, polite and mature beyond his years. As a young man in my office he was always optimistic, while fully accepting his health. And as a professional, he was always the definition of gentleman. Just like his Dad. Be proud of him.
Deepest sympathy. Heal well.

Mr & Mrs Jerrett thinking of you both as you mourn the loss of your son.May your treasured memories help guide you through the days ahead.

I had the privilege of having Ken as a co-worker and colleague at Legal Aid early in his career. His knowledge of the law was deep, as was his compassion for his clients. I enjoyed his sharp wit and had many hearty laughs with him at work over some foible or bit of gallows humour. I could tell then he was destined for great things and was happy to have been proven right.

I consider myself fortunate to have known him. He will be missed by many, not least of which his dear family. My thoughts are with you all. Be warmed by your memories of him. Godspeed, Ken.

My deepest condolences to Ken’s family. I had the pleasure of working with Ken when I participated in a co-op law program years ago. No matter how busy Ken was I always knew I could knock on his door for some advice. I’ll never forget his kindness and am truly saddened to hear of his passing. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.

So sorry to hear of your loss! We have heard many wonderful things about your son from Cal! May memories keep you strong through this difficult time.
Betty and Carl Cooper

Betty and Bud,
I was saddened to hear of Ken’ passing. I can’t imagine the pain of losing a child.
Ken and my Dad were great friends and had happy discussions over a Scotch or two. He was a help to me in so many ways, also. His sharp intellect and quick wit was always on display. He will be missed.
I wish I were in Newfoundland to see you all but do know you are in my thoughts. Grief is a long journey but know your son made a difference.

To all members of Ken’s family my sincerest condolences. Ken faced his devastating chronic illness with grace and courage and taught us how fulfilling life can be.
Please know you are in our thoughts during this very sad time.

As a teacher at Ascension Collegiate, I remember Kenneth as a wonderfully good-humoured, engaged ,respectful , and intelligent person, characteristics which he obviously carried with him throughout his all-too-short life. I am very sorry to learn of his death, but very impressed and not at all surprised at all that he accomplished. In my years of teaching at Ascension, Kenneth stands out as one of the best and brightest.

To Taryn and Ken’s family,

So sorry to hear about Ken’s passing I worked with Ken at Martin Whalen Hennery Stamp for a few years and I got to say he was a great man with a great sense of humor and always there and eager to help if you had questions or just needed advise. Ken will be missed by all. God Bless

My deepest condolences to Taryn, Ken’s parents, and Ken’s sister Carole Ann,
Ken and I met in law school in Saskatoon when we were part of the Laskin Moot team, 26 years ago. We hit it off immediately. (When I wrote in our legal brief that a person would have been stunned to learn that a drug company was trying to patent his genetic code, Ken laughed and insisted that we couldn’t use “stunned.” Newfoundlanders will understand why.) Ken had a lightning quick wit and he elevated puns to an art form. During that year Ken and I bonded over single malt whisky, Guinness and the music of Miles Davis, and he introduced me to the music of various Newfoundland groups. We lost touch for a while after law school, as I returned to my hometown of Regina and he to St. John’s, but we reconnected in St. John’s in 2006. After that, Deanna and I met up with Ken and his brilliant wife Taryn for many memorable visits in Dublin and St. John’s, including a wet August folk festival that our children recall fondly. Ken was a proud Newfoundlander and a generous tour guide, happy to show off his haunts (the Duke; the Crow’s Nest) and some of St. John’s world class restaurants. He also shared his knowledge of Newfoundland art with us, and the results hang on our walls. Ken was always matter-of-fact about his health problems, disclosing what we needed to know without any trace of self-pity. (The only exception I witnessed was in July 2018, when he let slip his sadness at not having much more time left with Taryn.) Life gave Ken lemons, which he used to make a lemon-based cocktail for as long as he could. Ken was great company and a real character. We won’t see his like again. He was my friend and I will miss him.

Betty & Eric

Ken was a very good friend from our High School years, and even then in his teens, he stood out as an amazing young man who possessed much wit and grace. He was the boy in a suit and a bow tie among us. He will never be forgotten. Ken never ever said goodbye to me. He always parted ways with the phrase, “Until we meet again.” I know that we will meet again Ken, someday, on the other side. My deepest condolences to Ken’s parents, and family.

Mr. & Mrs. Jerrett and Carol Ann and Family: I was so saddened to hear of Ken’s passing. It is easy to see from all these messages that he was very well-loved, had a huge circle of caring individuals around him and he lived a successful and enriched life. Those are things to be grateful for and I hope they will give you some comfort and strength. Thinking of you all.

Thinking of you at this time and remembering Kenny .Taryn , you should have seen Kenny as a young debonair teenager dressed and in fulll makeup as Prince , for the school Halloween party.
One time my girls wanted to visit Kenny at the Janeway. I was a bit nervous in case he would be upset or very ill. I got the greatest surprise , he had the nurses gushing over him . He was happy upbeat and ‘putting the best side out’. . Even though he was young he was operating his own I.V. Pump .an IV pump was new to me at the time but he wasn’t long giving me my training in the pump that was newly in operation .
It is a total miracle that Kenny. was on this earth making memories for forty nine years . Everyone who knew him will forever remember him. For his fortitude and personality .
Hold his memories close to your hearts. ,I know you have many .
When I saw where his memorials were going , I thought ‘typical Kenny ‘.

Taryn,
Please accept our heart felt condolences.

We are thinking of and praying for you at this sad time of Ken’s passing. We knew Ken as a boy and as a teenager, and as a member of the boys group and confirmation class, we saw his gentle, indomitable, and brave spirit that characterized his life all the way through, despite his medical condition. We have in our files a message which Ken himself, as a young confirmant, prepared and delivered at a Good Friday service, on the suffering of Jesus, in which God was present, assuring us that in our suffering and struggles, God is with us. God’s comfort and peace be with you all.

We offer condolences to you and the family on Kenneth’s passing. Even though his life was filled with many struggles, due to his medical condition, Kenneth ‘fought a good fight’. His ambitions and life’s successes far outweighed the impact of his illness, and he served as a true inspiration to all.

Just reading through these messages shows the broad reach and touch Ken made in the world. By his measure he had a long life, by ours, so very short. All of the words of his truth of character and quiet strength have been true for his whole life. May you all feel the respect and love we all had for Ken and may it stay with you forever.

So sorry to hear of Ken’s passing.. Even though his life was filled with many challenges he met them all in his quiet unobtrusive way without asking for any special favours from anyone.
Those of us who watched him grow through his younger years knew he would be successful in anything he undertook to do .
I think it was Winnie the Pooh who said to Tigger “ If there ever comes a time when we can’t be together I will hold you in my heart forever..”

Tom and Maureen

Our condolences to all of the family. Sorry to hear of his passing

Paul, myself and our family may be out of the country when visitation and funeral take place., I’m sorry to say because we’d have liked to celebrate Ken’s life with the enormous group of people who love him. We are very happy to have had the opportunity to visit Ken soon after he notified all of his decision to enter palliative care at HSC. Paul brought him a great bottle of Bordeaux (rated 100%! Ken was tickled!) which Ken insisted we taste and toast before leaving the balance for him and Taryn to enjoy through the evening. It was a poignant hour or so, with as much normalcy as possible in the conversation., once Ken had dispensed with his description of the circumstances which led to his decision that the time had come.. He was philosophical and pragmatic about what to us was a monumental and incredibly brave and selfless choice. In true Ken fashion he shrugged and said his lifespan had been more than double what his doctors has expected and that because of that more discoveries had been made about the progress and treatment of his disorder. His poise and grace lying there, receiving his contemporaries who would leave his room to resume their lives while he spent his last days suspended, was a display of grace and courage the like of which I doubt I will see again in my lifetime. To say that Ken has left his mark on us all is a little like saying the Grand Canyon is a nice little ditch. Deepest comfort to Ken’s parents, his sister and her family and to Taryn, his beloved.. Much Love, Renee and Paul Antle

Bud –Betty -family of Ken

Surely it can be said of Ken – in the words of St Timothy –

“ I have fought the good fight “

He did not let his serious illness –from infancy –stop him from pursuing his legal career and marrying a very good person to share his life .
