Monica Roslyn Bridger

October 9, 1934 to October 12, 2018

Obituary

Passed away peacefully at Kenny’s Pond Retirement Residence, aged 84, on October 12, 2018 in St. John’s. Predeceased by sons Geoffrey and Jason, and parents Minnie and Lawrence Walters of Gander.

Leaving with loving memories are her husband of almost 60 years, Spencer; daughter’s Leslie and Tracey (Robert Wellon); beloved grandchildren Spencer and Jack Wellon; brother Brian (Sherrill Walters); and a large circle of extended family and friends.

Monica was a strong, loving, compassionate, and gifted woman who was a positive role model to many. She taught at The College of Trades and Technology (now CONA) for many years and developed the medical secretaries program there. She was a gourmet cook who, along with her friends, started a monthly supper club in the early 1970’s, which continued for many decades.   Monica and Spencer also had many travelling adventures together with their friends. Monica was a passionate reader and often read several books a week. She also loved proper grammar, as many can attest to! (Mom, we hope we didn’t make too many mistakes with this!)  Monica formed EPAC (Exceptional Patients Against Cancer) in the Fall of 2001, just eight months after her terminal cancer diagnosis, and hosted inspirational meetings where people would come to share their stories and learn from one another. Monica was remarkable in so many ways; we’ll miss her dearly.

The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff at Kenny’s Pond Retirement Residence for their professionalism and loving care of Monica. Your kindness and compassion shown to Monica and our family will never be forgotten.

Cremation has taken place.

Visitation will be held at Carnell’s Funeral home, 329 Freshwater Road from 2-4pm and 7-9pm on Tuesday, October 16, 2018.

A funeral service and celebration of Monica’s life will be held at the Anglican Cathedral on Wednesday, October 17, 2018 at 2pm.

As an expression of sympathy, donations in Monica’s memory may be made to the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Care Foundation.

To the family of the lovely lady we fondly addressed as Mrs. Bridger. Mrs. Bridger was my first year Secretarial Science instructor, from whom I learned so much. She was a professional in her field who treated her students with the utmost respect. I have many fond memories of her that I reflect on from time to time. My deepest condolences to her family who she loved dearly. God speed, Mrs. Bridger.

Mrs. Bridger was my instructor for Secretarial Science. There are still things I remember and appreciate to this day that she taught our class. Mrs. Bridger was a gracious, lovely lady. My condolences to your family.

We were saddened to hear of Monica’s passing. Your family have always been valued friends over the years and in Monica’s case school friends, who grew up with us in Gander.
What was supposed to be our golden years are sadly not what we envisioned, and our dear friends keep slipping away.
Our deepest sympathy Spence to you and all your family.

Please accept my condolences on your loss. Mrs. Bridger was my instructor for Secretarial Science in my second year specializing in the medical field. I will always remember the lessons of life that were taught as well as respect that was always provided in our class. Mrs. Bridger was a lovely person that I will always remember.

Tracey, Bob, Spencer, Jack, Spence and Leslie,

I was very saddened to hear about Monica’s passing. I have many fond memories of her from the days when I lived in the Bridger home while attending Memorial University. Monica and Spence welcomed me with open arms and did everything possible to make me feel at home. I so enjoyed listening to Monica’s interesting stories and enjoying the wonderful meals that she generously shared with me. She had such a caring heart and she certainly liked to have fun. She always made a point of asking about my life and how things were going with genuine interest. She was a beautiful person inside and out.
I wish I could be there with you today to celebrate the fabulous life of your mother, grandmother and wife. Please know that you are in my thoughts.
Sending our love….,

Dr Bridger
I was saddened today to read that your wife and mom has died. Take care of each other in the sad days ahead.
Jan Crocker. (From the old Janeway, paediatric oncology)

Dear Leslie and Tracey and your dad and extended family. Thinking of you all at this time. I loved meeting your mom in the early 80’s – everything so perfect and under control as she served a gourmet lasagna dinner to four guests and the four of you – like an exquisite restaurant with great conversation. Your mom did so much through the students she taught and then with the exceptional patients group – helping people fight the disease. I am sure that her greatest roles were wife, mother and friend and she will live through you and your families and the good work you all do. Peace for Mrs. Bridger.

I live in NB now but I left NL in 1979. On occasion I will check the obituaries and this day I found Mrs. Bridger’s, my former teacher’s, unfortunate passing. This saddens me to to pass on my sincere condolences to her family. I remember her bubbly personality and great wisdom. She will always be in my heart and in my typing skills, grammar and my love of cooking. A very wonderful part of my Secretarial Science experience has passed, however, she will be remembered forever by her students. God bless Mrs. Monica Bridger and may she rest in peace.

Although I was fortunate enough to enjoy Monica’s incredible hospitality etc, the memory I hold dear was her kindness to the nervous young brownies when she tested them for badges. She made each of them feel very special. She had many wonderfull gifts that she shared with many.

Words are hard to find to describe Monica. She was the hostess with the mostest. My children all remember the many happy days at your house. A great woman has been lost to us.
