Obituary

It is with great sadness that the family of Nellie Button advise of her passing after a courageous battle with cancer. Predeceased by her parents Effie and Lewis Brown; baby sister brown and brother in law Bob Gardiner.  Leaving to mourn her life’s partner and love, husband Sam; daughter Kim Sinnott (Jim); son Michael (Vanessa); and her treasured grandchildren – Daniel, Joshua, and Sarah Sinnott; Faith and Jacob Button – and of course her bundle of furry joy, Gracie. Nellie also leaves to mourn her brother Ralph (Sadie) and sisters Doris Gardiner and Ada Robitaille (Robi), along with many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. A special thanks to all the medical professionals who offered her care over the years, but most especially Dr. Tina Squires, who offered an unparalleled level of care and compassion. Nellie lived her 66 years of life on her own terms and passed away at home surrounded by family. A sincere thank-you to all who have shown Nellie and her family support and prayers over these past few months. Resting at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 1045 Topsail Road, with visitation from 7:00-9:00 Thursday, 2 March, 2017; 2:00-4:00 and 7:00-9:00 Friday, 3 March, 2017. The funeral service will be at Carnell’s Memorial Chapel, 329 Freshwater Road at 11:00 Saturday, 4 March, 2017 with interment to follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.  Flowers gratefully accepted, or donations can be made in her memory to the SPCA or the Canadian Cancer Society.

Dear Sam. My sincerest condolences to you and your family. Even though I hadn’t physically met Nellie, I feel I knew her in my heart. She was so sincere, loving and compassionate, and she made a huge impact in the lives of those fortunate enough to be regarded as her friend. I am still shocked at her passing, even though I was aware of her terrible suffering and sickness. For her sake, I’m glad that part is over. But I wish she hadn’t had to leave you all so soon. I will be thinking of you, and praying that each day brings you wonderful memories to soothe your broken heart. After a while, with each passing day, the pain will lessen, little by little, but she will always be with you. Treasure all those moments……..even they will have their own special kind of beauty, just as Nellie did. Take care of yourself. I’ll be thinking of you all. Rest well, darling Nellie. We all love you and will miss you, terribly.

Dear Mike and Family, sending heartfelt condolences at this very difficult time.

Sam and family,
So sorry to hear of Nellie’s passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. God bless you and all in this time of sadness.

My thoughts are with you as you part with dear NELLIE. I worked with NELLIE for several years both from a distance when she was in Lab City and when she eventually moved to St. John’s. She was an inspiration to me as she faced health challenges while keeping a happy and pleasant attitude. I know that you will miss a very caring and loving wife, mother, nanny and family member. Take care of yourselves.

Sam, Kim, Michael and families,
We were so sorry to hear of Nellie’s passing. A lot of people have such fond memories of her and for good reason – she had such a large personality! I don’t think she ever greeted anyone without a big smile and a story to tell, and it was no different for us. Please know we wish you all much love and peace now and in the days ahead.

My wife, Shiree, and I offer our condolences to Sam, Mike, and Kim.

My earliest recollection of aunt Nellie was when she came to visit us in Nova Scotia when my dad was sent over to Egypt on a UN peacekeeping mission. I was just starting kindergarten, my brother Guy was one grade ahead, so my mom (Ada, Nellie’s older sister) had her hands full with two bratty kids. And boy were we brats! Looking back on it, Nellie was obviously there to support mom while her husband was away for six months. But at the time Guy and I just thought we had a favourite aunt coming to play with us, whom we could torment and tease. Imagine how annoying we were when we discovered her nickname was Nelly Belly ! And imagine how even more surprised we were to discover that and Nellyie could dish it right back to us!

Like grandpa Lewis, we knew that Nellie suffered greatly with rheumatoid arthritis. Also, like grandfather, she never let it slow her down. Cheerful in the face of adversity is how I will always remember Nellie…a true Newfoundlander.

I am very deeply saddened to hear of Nellie’s passing. We met in Happy Valley, Labrador on one of her many visits to our office. I have never met anyone with a more positive and caring outlook. Her smile could light even the darkest room. We had many wonderful conversations and her quick wit never failed to bring a smile to my face! Her loss is certainly felt deeply by many.

My sincere condolences are extended to all her family.

May God Bless.

Sam and Family: So sorry to hear of Cousin Nellie’s passing. She surely was an inspiration to all who knew her. Be content with the memories you have, and may the Good Lord be with you always, but particularly during this trying time.

Our thoughts and prays are with you and your families.Tom and Olive Kelly.

So sorry to hear. Prayers to all the family.

So sorry to hear of Nellie’s passing. I remember her fondly, from the time we worked together in Labrador City. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this time. Denise and Hayward Blake.

I met Nellie when she was a child visiting her Aunt in Hare Bay. She was always special and fun with her infectious smile, laughter and time for chatting. Years later we met again in Labrador City. The last time I saw her was at her St. JOHN,S home. She was positive to the end. Sam and family, I know you were all loved by Nellie and she adored you all. Remember her special life lived to the fullest. Sending love and peace to all of her family. Ruth & Nels.

Uncle Sam and cousins Kim and Michael, she was the best. I will always remember aunt Nellie with her large and welcoming smile, her infectious laugh and her good company. May she finally be at peace. Keep strong and we’ll add our prayers to yours.
Guy, Jennifer, Devon and Cedric.

Auntie,
It was the twinkle in your eyes, and the smirk in your smile when you looked at me. You never yelled, you never scorned, the only thing you would do was encourage the little devil in me ! Your sense of humour was my sense of humour (I think this got us into trouble sometimes!). You were always an inspiration to me with your hard work and love of family.
I will always love you and will miss you because you’re my Aunt Nellie Bellie Button
