It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, Patrick Walter O’Brien (Outer Cove).  Paddy passed away peacefully after a lengthy illness at St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital on July 5, 2021.

Predeceased by his parents Dennis Sr. and Mary O’Brien, parents-in-law William and Mary Field, brother Dennis, and sisters-in-law Rowena and Linda O’Brien.

Forever remembered and forever loved by his wife Dorothy (Field) of 55 years, his cherished children Jody (Billy), Paddy (Janice), Christina (Dave), and his little fur-baby Rosie; grandchildren Andrew, Cody, Kyle, Jamie, Ciara, James, and Dawson; great-grandchildren Kaiden, Jade, Maddison, Faye, and Colton; siblings John, Frank, Shirley, and Rose; and many nieces, nephews, family and countless life-long friends too numerous to mention.

Paddy spent over 40 years doing what he loved: drilling Artesian wells across Newfoundland and Labrador and meeting so many people.  He always enjoyed a great story or conversation with all his customers.  He always made a point to find out who you were and where you came from.  In the good old days Paddy always enjoyed a great party and dance floor to a great waltz and jive on, all while sipping on a rum and coke.  Once retired, he spent as much time as he could at his cabin in Jamestown, where he loved to putter around with family and friends.

Paddy/Dad, you were the strongest and most determined person with such a big heart and gentle soul.  You were friends with many and was always there to lend a hand.

Paddy spent eight months in the ICU at the Health Sciences Centre before being transferred to the ICU at St. Clare’s where he spent his remaining four months.  During those times in the ICU, the nurses became our family as well.  They each held a special place in his heart and ours.  Andrew, Renee, Pauline, Laura, Danica, Leigh-Anne, Sherry-Lynn, Juanita, Trish, Josh, Alicia and Michael: your kindness and compassion never went unnoticed and we thank you for all you did to help Dad’s days be a little brighter, especially his dance party.  To the two most memorable ward clerks, Christa (HSC) and Melissa (St. Clare’s), ladies you always popped your head in to see Dad and he loved seeing and chatting/lip reading with you both.  Those little visits brightened his day more than you will ever know.  Thank you!

You all knew if you received “the signature Paddy O’Brien wink and smile” it was all good!

To the doctors who went over and above to care for dad we will never be able to thank you enough. Dr. O’Brien, Dr. Cliff, Dr. Parfrey, Dr. Eustace, Dr. Steffanelli and Dr. Clayden. Thank- you.

To Dr. Sharon Peter’s Thank- you for your dedication to your work and your patients. We are so grateful for all your compassion and kindness.

To respect dads wishes cremation has taken place.

Flowers are greatly accepted or a donation could be made to a charity of one’s choice in Paddy’s name.

Visitation will take place at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road on Thursday July 8th from 9:00am to 9:00pm. A service will be held from the Carnell Memorial Chapel on Friday, July 9th at 11:00am.  The funeral service will be livestreamed for those unable to attend in person with the link available above.

Dot, Jody , Paddy Jr. and Chrissy and the entire O’Brien Family,
So saddened by the passing of my wonderful neighbour and dear friend. “Paddy “came in to our lives when we built our home next door to the O’Brien family more than 30 years ago. John Sr and Paddy became fast friends and over the years we were blessed to share great times with Paddy and his family . Words fall short when trying to describe Paddy…he was not large in stature……hard to believe that body could hold such a large ,caring and generous heart! When John passed away Paddy became like a guardian angel , always checking in to see if there was anything I needed and always there to give a helping hand.! I will miss “P” more that words can express! To all, may the memories of this wonderful man aprovide comfort during this difficult time.
Rest In Peace my friend ❤️

To Paddy’s family,

I am truly sorry to hear of Paddy’s passing. I hope he is finally at peace. He was so lucky to have such an incredibly supportive family in his corner. I know this past year of his hospitalization was not easy on any of you but you were always there for him, even on FaceTime during the lockdown. I always enjoyed listening to the old country music with him, his visits with Rosie and getting that famous wink and smile from him!
