Sheila Gladys Edison (Gosling)

April 14, 1933 to September 22, 2019

Obituary

Born April 14, 1933 and entered into eternal rest on September 22, 2019, peacefully and with dignity; a matriarch, surrounded by her family.   Sheila was born in St. John’s, one of eight children.  She was a tireless and inspirational woman.  She began her married life in Botwood, welcoming five children. Her devotion to her family guided her life.  She and Elmer worked and loved as a team. If something needed to be done, Sheila was ahead of the pack, initiating projects and seeing them through.   Anyone who knows Botwood back in the day remembers the excitement and activity of living there at that time.  Over the years they pursued many avenues of adventure to ensure the happiness and livelihood of their family. Sheila loved to see the family grow, and fortunately, there always seemed to be babies on the scene.  She left this world as she lived…with a song in her heart and dancing toward her next great adventure, relying on her faith, and secure in the knowledge that she would be reunited with those loved ones who passed before her.

Predeceased by her husband Elmer, her parents, Walter and Alice Gosling, two sons, Paul and Larry, her daughter-in-law Ann, five brothers Austin, Larry, Walter, Bob and Fraser, and two sisters, Doris and Marguerite.

Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories, her son Fraser (Valerie), Grandchildren Christopher (Liezel), Wendy (Craig) and Ian (Tracy); her daughter Beverly, Grandchildren Tammy Jones (Keith – deceased) and Jamie Jones (Ginelle); son Jeffrey (Sheila), Granddaughter Leah; Larry’s children, Shannon (Ben) and Ryan (Beth); and Paul’s daughter, Terri;  13 Great Grandchildren;  her brother-in-Law Alonzo Chafe;  sister-in-Law Lorraine Gosling; and her friends and the staff at Pleasantview Towers 4SE who meant so much to her these past few years.  Thank you. Many other extended family and friends, too numerous to mention, are also mourning her loss.

Resting at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, St. John’s on Wednesday, September 25, 2019 from 2 – 4 and 7 – 9 pm.  Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, September 26, 2019 at 10:00 am from the Anglican Church of the Ascension, 58 Smallwood Drive, Mount Pearl.  Interment to follow at the Anglican Cemetery, Kenmount Road.  Donations in Sheila’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Fraser, Bev, Jeff, & Your families:
So sorry to hear of Sheila’s passing .
It’s always sad & difficult to part with your Mom. She gave you life, cared for you, comforted you, taught you right from wrong & prayed that she sent you on the right path. No doubt Sheila did that. You guys are amazing. The service this morning was proof of that. A beautiful tribute to a beautiful lady (who, by the way, opened her door to our family in Botwood, way back when.
She’s finally @ peace. Rest easy Sheila!

We can shed tears that they have gone,
Or we can smile that they have lived.
We can close our eyes and pray that they will come back,
Or we can open our eyes and see all the good that they have left us.
Our hearts can be empty because we cannot see them,
Or our hearts can be full with love that we’ve shared.
We can turn our backs on tomorrow and live yesterday,
Or we can be happy for tomorrow, because of yesterday.
We can remember them and only that they have gone,
Or we can cherish their memory and let it live on.
We can cry and close our minds, be empty and turn our backs,
Or we can do what they would have wanted,
Smile, open our eyes, love, and go on.
My Deepest Sympathy

Wendy and family, so very sorry to hear about the loss of your grandmother. Sorry for your loss.
