The Rt. Rev. Dr. Geoffrey Curtis Ralph Peddle

January 1, 1963 to October 8, 2020

Obituary

We are heartbroken to announce the sudden passing of our beloved Geoff – husband, father, grandfather, brother, servant, Priest and Bishop – but mostly friend, and above all, a child of God. His life and his work exemplified his favourite words from the Prophet Micah: “What does the Lord require of you but to act justly, to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”

Geoff was born in Bonavista and was a proud Newfoundlander and Labradorian – he loved both places and he was honoured to serve and minister as Priest and Bishop in Eastern Newfoundland and Labrador.

He is predeceased by his parents Ralph and Jean Peddle, sister Kathryn, brother-in-law Arch, in-laws Fred and Stella Hayter, and brothers-in-law David and Vince.

Leaving to mourn and to give thanksgiving for his life are his wife Kathy, son Adam and daughter-in law Magdalena, precious granddaughter Josefina, and son Benjamin. Also leaving to mourn are his brothers Gerry (Elsie), Leslie (Bernice), his sister Sandra, and their families, brothers-in-law Fred (Liz), Jim (Angie), Ray (Cathie) and sisters-in-law Marie (David), Elaine, Phyllis (Hubert), Doreen (Phil) and their families, as well as the Curda family in the Czech Republic. Also mourning his loss are his Synod Office and Church families, including fellow Bishops, Priests and Deacons, the parishioners throughout his beloved Diocese, and many colleagues worldwide.  He leaves a wide circle of dear friends including Peter and Jan, Leslie and Sue, Dan, Cindy, Derm (Anne deceased), Andrew and Amy, Sam and Jill, Ed and Claudia, Jonell (Larry deceased), Hilda (Bruce deceased), Rick, and Sisters Elizabeth Davis and Geraldine Mason of the Sisters of Mercy Congregation.

Cremation has taken place. There is no visitation at this time and a funeral service will be planned for when friends and family can gather. Please give thanksgiving for Geoff’s life by taking the time to speak with a friend, to share a coffee, drink or meal together, enjoy a good book or a bad movie, or take a walk in nature – all the things Geoff loved. Be kind to one another. May there be many moments of grace for us all as we make our way through these bewildering and sorrowful days. Even though Geoff’s light has changed- it is still everywhere and in every place.

Donations in Geoff’s memory would be welcomed to any of the projects he supported: The Home Again Furniture Bank, The Food Sharing Association, Roots of Empathy, Godly Play Canada, or the PWRDF.

Kathy, Adam and Ben,
We were heartbroken and so sorry to hear of Geoff’s sudden passing. Words cannot begin to express how we felt upon hearing the news. Geoff was one of the kindest and gentlest people that I have ever had the privilege to know. He was so dedicated to his family and friends. He had such a positive outlook on life and could always put you at ease with his stories and sense of humor. I admired the wonderful qualities that made him the special person that he was. He had intelligence, wit and such a gentle caring heart that made him a great friend. I appreciated our chats and his visits, particularly on the passing of my parents. I will forever cherish my memories of him and our times together. May you and the boys find some peace and comfort in knowing that others were so deeply touched by Geoff’s light, and that we too share in your sorrow and loss. God bless.

Dearest Kathy. For several days I have tried to find the words, but there are none. Charlie and I are so deeply sorry. Bishop Geoff was one of the most kind, compassionate, gentle and inclusive persons I have ever known. I was privileged to call him a friend for over 20 years and my dear Bishop these past years. My heart is breaking at the thought of never again seeing that beautiful smile and hearing his calming, gentle voice. Many years ago my sister Carole said to me that every time she heard (then Rev. Peddle’s) voice, she felt she was hearing God speak. I agree, and I’ve thought many times how well your ministry at the I C U complimented Bishop Geoff’s ministry. My family will never forget your warmth, careing, and gentle voice as you cared for our brother and comforted us. You, who have brought so much comfort to others, allow us to comfort you. Bishop Geoff was a gift from Almighty God to this world, and we give God all the praise, thanks and glory. And, dear Kathy thank you for sharing Geoff with us. God and time are wonderful healers. To you and your precious family “The Lord bless you and keep you, and make His face to shine upon you.” Amen. Love and constant prayer, Shirley and Charlie G

To Family & Loved Ones of Bishop Geoffrey Peddle;
We are shocked and deeply sadden at the news of the death this dear friend and Bishop, Geoffrey!
I, (Bill) have known him since his student days at Queens College, and was doing his practical service/training at St. Thomas’ Church at which I was clergy staff at the time . I often picked him up at the College on Sunday mornings bringing him to church. Even at that time (early/mid 198o’s) I was impressed by his warm personality and I felt that he had been truly called to a meaningful, successful and ‘high’ calling in our Lord’s ministry.)
Kathy, and all the family: Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Please accept our most sincere condolence.

Kathy, Adam and Benjamin. Marion and I are overwhelmed with heartache. Words cannot express how we feel over the sudden passing of Bishop Geoff. For many years Geoff was my mentor, spiritual director, and brother in Christ. He preached at my ordination, was my Rector at the Church of the Good Shepherd, and a friend to Marion and me. My memories of him , and his ongoing guidance and support will remain forever. This caring and compassionate man was truly one of a kind, as well as an Apostle of Christ. In this very dark time, I pray that God will uphold you and give you strength. You and your family are very much in our thoughts and prayers. This gentle shepherd will be truly missed. God Bless you and hold you in the days, weeks and months ahead. May his soul and the souls of all the departed Rest in Peace.

He opened up the doors to our Parish to anyone who wished to enter. He shared his life with us and gave us so much hope for our church. I have so many wonderful memories to hold close. One of the best jobs I ever had was to be chosen to be on the selection committee at the Church of the Good Shepherd when Geoff applied for the position of our Parish Priest. We were certainly blessed to have him with us for many years. My thoughts and prayers are with you. May our Bishop Rest in Peace and Rise in Glory

Members throughout the CLB’s Eastern NL Diocesan Regiment share in the mourning and thanksgiving for Bishop Peddle’s life. We cherish many memories of our Bishop, who fulfilled his role as our Regimental Chaplain with great pride and joy. Bishop Peddle has influenced our organization and its members in many ways, helping us always to further our objective to advance Christ’s kingdom among youth. His lessons and guidance will continue to serve us well for many years to come.

Kathy and family: I didn’t really know Geoff until he invited me to be rector of the parish of St. Philip’s nearly 3 years ago. On behalf of the parish of St. Philip’s I offer you our heart-felt sympathy. May Geoff rest in peace and rise in glory. Amen.

Cathy and Family.

My thoughts and prayers are with you, his family and friends at this time. Along with your great loss, his passing is a loss to diocese, and to the church as a whole.

Bishop Peddle was an extraordinary person who believed the extraordinary comes from the ordinary. He wore many hats during his time in ministry, figuratively and literally, but his servant spirit and heart was exemplified in all he did, and he accomplished much! He believed nothing was unattainable and “much can be accomplished with just a cup of tea and a bun”.

I remember a conversation I had with him when he visited our home during his home visits in the parish the first year as rector at the Good Shepherd. He talked about community, and his want to open up the church so people – the lonely, the homeless, the hungry…anyone – could come in for a cup of tea or coffee and a bun, perhaps a bowl of soup, and a dream to see that grow. Without the slightest bit of doubt or inhibition he said, “…and I am going to make that happen!” I admit, a lot of us thought that was a huge undertaking and bigger than we were, but he knew God is bigger and “able to do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine”. That cup of tea and a bun turned into Shepherd’s Café and a ministry that has fed many, brought people together, and restored faith.

Our sincere condolences.

Brenda and Brian Harding

Kathy, Adam, Benjamin and all the family, I was shocked and saddened to hear of the passing of Bishop Geoff. I had the opportunity to have had him as an instructor at Queen’s College, attend his ordination, share a group table discussion with him at a synod and found him to be a very passionate, caring individual. May you be comforted knowing that you are being uplifted in prayer and God will never leave you nor forsake you as you walk through this valley of death. Rest in peace Geoff and rise in glory.

To Kathy and Family,

Georgina and I send our sincere condolences on your great loss. We know Geoff’s faith and your own, as well as the love of family and friends, will sustain you in the days ahead.

We enjoyed very much the short time we spent with you both on the Beaumont Hamel tour in July of 2016 and wanted you to know that our thoughts and prayers are with you.

It is with great sadness that I received the news of Geoff’s death. We had a warm relationship over the last 25 years and the last time we met we lingered long over coffee after breakfast. I watched him move form being a priest in Mt Pearl to becoming Bishop of the diocese. He was always welcoming and kind. I pray God’s blessing upon his family as they walk through the the kind of shadow that only death can cast. Geoff will be greatly missed.

Aunt Kathy, and cousins Adam and Ben,

I have been sitting here trying to come up with the words to convey the sadness that Uncle Geoff’s death has placed upon us. The truth is, there are no words that can even begin to ease the pain. Please know that you are all loved so much and you will always have a shoulder to lean on.
I will forever remember his smile and quirky sense of humour. I still can’t believe it.

Heather, Fabien, Taylor and Colton

To Kathy and all the Peddle family and friends
My e-mail from Bishop Peddle, of September 29th read that my C of E Orphanage books would be signed when he returned to the office that night. This was the man of grace and courage who kept his word amid pressures and untold sickness. Above all, he was a caring and compassionate Sheppard to the C.L.B. whom he said on numerous occasions that he loved very deeply and his greatest privilidge in being bishop of Eastern Newfoundland and Labrador was to be their Chaplin. To say we will miss him dearly is an understatement. May our Commander in Chief welcome him with open arms and grant him eternal rest and peace at the last.

J.A. Heffernan ( Colonel ) M.S.M.

Dear Kathy and family, II was devastated when I heard of Geoff’s death. I first met you and Geoff while you were both expecting your first child.. I was impressed with Geoff’s authentic spirit and warmth then, and it never seem to change at all over the years. He never seemed to busy to take the time to stop and chat, even for a few minutes. I don’t ever remember ever seeing him without one of those smiles that reflected the warmth of his greeting.. He will be sadly missed, and his memory will forever be in our hearts.. May God continue to keep you and your family strong on your journey as you deal with his death. Remember his presence will always be with you, it’s just that you will not be able to see him. Geoff’s now lives with God , and one day you will be reunited with him again. Take comfort that many people are supporting you in thought and prayer.

Kathy and family…. Please know you are in our prayers at this difficult time.

Dearest Kathy, Geoff was a blessing from God into our lives. The love and friendship which you both have shared with us has been a constant source of joy and inspiration over more years than we can remember. Even in the depths of our grief we hold on to the sheer joy and vibrancy of Geoff’s presence, knowing that in everything he did he sought to be a faithful disciple of Christ and a true human being. What was so wonderful about Geoff was that these two realities were one and the same. He was a proud Newfoundlander who loved to share a beer with Peter, take us to a hockey match or show us the beauty of your island. He loved his time here in Cardiff and we were so happy to show you both the beauty of Wales. All we can say is what an enormous privilege it was to have him as a dear friend, and even through the tears as we type this we hang on to his voice saying “you guys are family, right”, his smile, and his presence. We know we will meet him again in the life of eternity. We send you, Adam and Ben, and Magda and Josephina, all our love and prayers. We knows that Geoff continues to live in the flow of God’s love just as surely as we all do. Rest in peace Geoff, and rise in glory +

Thinking of you and remembering the visit of you and the bishop when Norma was sick and on her final journey to be with God. Every blessing to you and the family as you cope with the future.

Dear Kathy, I almost can’t find the words to express your loss of Geoff. For Adam, Magdalena and your little grand daughter, and of course Ben and Geoff ‘s other family members. I send my deepest sympathies for each of them. I too am in shock and devastated. You and Geoff showed me such kindness and support over the years and I will be grateful always. Thank you! I am having much difficulty expressing my feelings at the moment. I hope you will understand.
I will miss Geoff terribly! He was a wonderful man and loved you and his family so much. I so wish he could be on earth for many more years as he would only have done good things and he was so young. I surely will miss the opportunity to see Geoff on his trips to Toronto and you as well, of course.
