Obituary

Aged 105 years and eleven months, died peacefully at the Miller Centre in St. John’s, NL.  She was the widow of her beloved W. Evan Whiteway, loving and loved mother of David, of Bampton, Tiverton, Devon, England. She was predeceased by her parents, William E. and Bessie Wood, by her siblings, Margaret, Edward, and Marion (Davison). She will be happily remembered for her caring and independent spirit by her niece, Barbara (Birkett), and nephew, Peter(Davison), cousin Kathy Burnell, seven great-nephews and nieces, as well as by former students from her teaching years in St.John’s .  Numerous friends and neighbours will recall the warm hospitality of her home and her love of gardening. She was born and raised in St. John’s, and after receiving her Bachelor of Arts from McGill, she returned to her home city. The family would like to thank the staff at Tiffany Court, Cambridge Estates and the Miller Centre for their care over several years. Visitation will be held at Carnell’s Funeral Home on Tuesday, May 1st from 7-9 pm. The funeral service will be held from St. Thomas Anglican Church on Wednesday, May 2nd 2018 at 11:30 a.m.  Interment to follow at the General Protestant Cemetery. Donations in her memory may be made to any of the following, or to a charity of your choice: The School of Music at Memorial University (in memory of Evan), the choir funds of Cochrane St. United Church and St Thomas’ Church, and the Alzheimer Society.
