William (Billie) Josiah Best, age 84, of Mount Pearl formerly of Victoria, Conception Bay, passed away peacefully at Agnes Pratt nursing home on Wednesday, April 21, 2021. He was surrounded by his loving family and his wonderful friends & staff at the home.

Leaving to mourn his complaining but loving wife Winnie; eldest son Trevor Best (The Great One), Denise Loder (Sargent Major), Stephanie Carter (Money Bags), & stepson Richard Street; grandchildren Ava and William (Trevor Best), Gavin (Denise and Doug Loder), Seyla and Maddox (Stephanie and George Carter).

Predeceased by his siblings Florence Stanford (Archibald), Helen Parsons (Leonard), Clarence Best (Blanche), and Winston Bess (Dora); and niece Bonnie Sellars.

Dad was born on June 22, 1936, in Victoria, BC (behind Carbonear). Dad was raised in the Town “where the sun always shines”, as he often said. He moved to Mt. Pearl some years ago only to be closer to his Children.  He loved to reflect and tell stories of his fond days as a boy growing up in “The Village.” Dad was admired by many that knew him not only for his positive attitude but also for his strength and determination throughout his life & his witty personality. Dad never let his physical disability ever prevent him from accomplishing his goals. He provided himself with an education and was always proud to support his family. He would always chuckle when telling us years ago that as a boy no one would ever think that he would get to a ripe old age. Dad was the one of six children, today he leaves behind his youngest sister Elsie Sellers (Western Bay).

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Rd., St. John’s. Visitation will take place on Sunday, April 25 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held from The Carnell Memorial Chapel on Monday, April 26 at 2 p.m.

No flowers by request. Donations in his memory may be made to Park Avenue Pentecostal Church.

I will always have fond childhood memories of Mr. Best from your time in Carbonear. Growing up, your home on Burgess Place was a second home to many, and we were always made to feel very welcome. I will remember Bill for his kindness, wit and heart-warming grin. He was also a man who was very proud of his family and that was quite evident by the way he spoke of each of you. May your strength as a family and lifetime of wonderful memories help carry you though this difficult time. Thinking of you all warmly and sending my sincere condolences.

Often when I made him a cup of tea in the late evening to have with his toast, jam jams or cream cracker and homemade jam I had many chats with him about different events in his life, the news at AP and of course how proud he was of his family. He was truly a great and inspiring man, who understood the value in every day and had a way of making others appreciate every moment. He was generous in his wit and in his kindness and for that I will always be truly grateful. These beautiful qualities are present and shine in his children and I feel very blessed to have been invited to be a very small part of his life and yours. I know he will be missed by so many but I also know that old friends wait to greet him. My prayers are with you all.
