William White

January 11, 1941 to August 27, 2017

Obituary

Bill White was born in St John’s, Newfoundland, the second of two children to Eric and Carol White, and died peacefully in Whitby, Ontario, surrounded by family.

Bill was a loving husband to Shirley (nee Matthews); a proud father of his children Bradford (Kristina Bugayong), Darren (Debra nee Munson) and Christine (David Serviss); and a devoted Poppa to his adored grandchildren: Sophia White, Andrew & Samuel White, and Kennedy, Riley, Finn & Willem Serviss. Bill was also a close brother-in-law to Yvonne King (George), and Judy Strong (Tom) and a warm-hearted uncle to Brian King, Lori Piercey, Maria Murphy, Laura Strong, Matthew Strong, and Karen Nell-Bennett. Audrey & Peter Nell, Marjorie (predeceased) & Clarence Jackman, Blanche, Cyril and Bill Vey were also very special in-laws. Bill was a loyal and dedicated friend to many during his 76 years.

Growing up in St. John’s, Bill loved all sports, especially hockey and baseball; and was a member of the Boy Scouts. Throughout life his true loves included his wife and family, geotechnical engineering, and his insatiable thirst for knowledge and world geography.  A very mindful and methodical person, he truly enjoyed the small pleasures in life – The Yankees, The Jays, biking, cross country skiing, and books, books, and more books.

Bill attended Memorial University of Newfoundland, and Technical University of Nova Scotia (TUNS, now Dalhousie). He was a registered P.Eng in Ontario, Newfoundland, and New Brunswick. His Civil Engineering career flourished – working for larger firms, building his own consulting practices, and also teaching at Memorial; he often left the house in the morning with three separate briefcases under his arm!

Always good natured and humble, Bill White personified the values of integrity, strength, and self-discipline.  Often a man of few words, what he did share was quick witted, insightful, educated, and splashed with humour.

August 3, 2017 Bill celebrated his 54th wedding anniversary to Shirley, his best friend and the love of his life, with his family in Whitby, their home since 2013.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, September 10, 2-4pm and 7-9pm at Carnell’s Funeral Home, Freshwater Road, St. John’s, Newfoundland. Funeral service will be held at Gower Street United Church, St. John’s, on September 11 at 11:00am.

Shirley, Brad, Darren and Christine we are so sorry to hear the news of Bill’s passing. It was always great to see Bill in St John’s and also in Frederiction. We extend our condolences to all.

Dear Shirley & Family,
We were saddened on learning of Bill’s recent passing. While geography has separated our respective families in recent years we have often thought of you both over the years and cherish many memories, our lives overlapping as neighbours on Belfast Street. Time obviously changes things but our lives were truly enriched through the good times we shared together. We extend sincere condolences to you and all the family and trust that the love of family and friends will sustain you in the days ahead.
Love and best wishes
Celeste & Frank Hawkins,
Leamington, Ontario.

I’m so very sorry for your loss. I just learned of Bills passing. My deepest sympathy to you Shirley, Brad, Darren and Christine.

Shirley and family,
Please accept our sincere condolences on Bill’s passing. It is obvious that you have a close and loving family and cherish each other in the important ways. That is a tribute to Bill in itself. We always enjoyed spending time with Bill. He was a thoughtful and interesting man. Take care, Deanne, Alex and Julianne.

Shirley, Brad, Darren, Christine and families. So very sad to hear of the passing of Bill. He was such a kind person and a true gentleman. Your wonderful memories together will certainly help you through this difficult time. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Dear Shirley.
What a shock it was to see Bill looking out at me in the Globe and Mail today. He was a handsome man.
That brief time Bill and I worked together at Trow’s made me appreciate his steadfastness and intelligence.
It also gave Carol and me the opportunity to meet you Shirley – and your Triumph sports car.
Our paths did cross from time to time over the years, and for that I am grateful.
Cancer is so indiscriminate, taking much too early your Bill and my Carol.
With love to you and your family. Don

To Darren, Christine and Brad, we saw that in his quiet way he was a huge presence in your lives and led his family with care and integrity. He was a gentle man and leaves a big footprint in all of your hearts…until you meet again.

I’m so very sorry to learn of the passing of your father, Christine. Please know that you, your family, his friends, and his colleagues are all in my thoughts at this sad time.

We were in the same class at PWC. I am so sorry to hear that Bill passed away. He is in God’s hands now. My condolences to his wife and family.

I knew Bill from my days in PWC, and also MUN. I am very sorry to read of his passing. My condolences to his family.
