Gordon Lloyd Vivian

February 18, 1940 to March 1, 2023

Obituary

It is with profound sadness that the family of Gordon Lloyd Vivian announce his passing on March 1st, 2023 at the age of 83.

Predeceased by his parents Stanley and Blanche Vivian; sister Lorraine Stanley; son-in-law John Brazill; and brother-in-law Charles Squires.

Gord leaves many fond, funny and now very cherished memories to his wife of 58 years, Patricia.  His daughter Sherry (Bruce Tilley); two grandchildren Donovan Vivian-Parsons, and Carmen Vivian-Brazill (Joey Wagner).  He also leaves to mourn his only brother Jim Vivian (Alice), sisters Christine Sooley (Howard), Bonnie Vivian Whittle; and sister-in-law Faith Squires.  Gord will also be missed by many nieces, nephews and their families, and many more friends and acquaintances.

Gord was born in Hearts Delight-Islington, Trinity Bay.  He moved to St. John’s as a young teenager where he attended high school, then onto college, where he got his trade as a Master Plumber.  He continued in that trade until he finally hung up his pipe wrench in 2010, but he was still known to install a hot water boiler or thaw frozen pipes for someone who asked.  Even after retiring, “Mr. Vivian”, “Gord”, “Dad”, “Pop”, “Uncle Gord” was often called upon to either fix a problem, or to lend the tool – which he ALWAYS had – for the repair.  He was an enormous wealth of advice to those attempting tasks they were unsure of, and he became a valued mentor to the lucky few close to him.  The knowledge he has passed on will be treasured even more.

In his younger years, Gord took a lot of enjoyment in woodworking.  He liked trouting and ice fishing.  He loved classic cars and could name the year and model of most any car by just a glance.  Gord and his wife Patricia square-danced with the Avalon Stompers well into their 50s and 60s.  He loved a good feed of pea soup with salt meat and dumplings, and wouldn’t turn down a gift of moose, turr, rabbit, or codfish.

When Gord was just 42 years old, he suffered a massive heart attack and was told he would not live to see the next day.  Well, he lived a fulfilling 41 years after that, during which he battled and beat many more health issues thrown at him, proving cats are not the only ones with 9 lives.  He was strong, resilient, and unassuming.

Cremation has taken place.  The family will receive visitors at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, on Monday, March 6 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.  Funeral service will be held from the Carnell Memorial Chapel on Tuesday, March 7 at 2 p.m.

In honour of Gordon, donations can be made to any local food bank or the SPCA.
