It is with great sadness we share with you the passing of Eric Edward Harvey on November 20th, 2024 at the Health Sciences after a courageous six-month battle with cancer and its complications.
Predeceased by his father Eric A. Harvey (1987) and his mother Margaret (nee Cairns, 2002) and special cousin George Neal (2024). Leaving to mourn his partner and best friend of 38 years, Peggy Elliott. Also mourning are his brother Hugh, sister-in-law, Donna, nephew Brian and his great nephew Ben, as well as many cousins from the Harvey family. His two loyal Siamese buddies, Sydney and Sophia will miss him greatly. He will be missed by his life long friends, many of whom enjoyed the annual Terra Nova golf trip.
Eric spent most of his working career with the federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans retiring in 2016 to pursue his many interests and hobbies.
He was a member of the Progress Club of Canada spending many hours in his younger days raising money for charity by selling tickets on paintings and delivering turkeys at Christmas. He was also a member of the Crow’s Nest and the Opimian Society.
Eric enjoyed photography, music, and gardening. He could garden from dawn to dusk with great enjoyment, meticulously tending to the vegetables, sunflowers, and trees. Gourmet food and fine wine were favorites of his, especially when shared with family and friends. Lobster, pan fried cod and barbeque dishes were his specialty. Evenings at the ‘Simmsplex’, including music trivia with the golf couples and other friends, were always a fun time.
Eric was introduced to travel at an early age as he travelled with his mother back and forth to Scotland to visit relatives. As a young man he often travelled to Florida and Bermuda with his parents. During a university summer break Eric and three friends drove to Florida for a month. Three tall guys and one not so tall in a small compact car have been the subject of much laughter over the years.
Later he and Peggy enjoyed travelling immensely. Eric especially enjoyed European ocean and river cruises and visits to many of the Caribbean islands.
A special thank you to the close friends who supported us though this difficult time with calls, emails, treats, kindness and support. Especially, Judy and Jim Keats, Phyllis Weir, Colin and Susie Simms, John and Sally Rose, John and Anita Cummings, and Bob and Dale Noseworthy, who kept Eric in an endless supply of cookies throughout his illness. Lastly, thanks to the incredibly compassionate nurses, doctors and dietary team of 4NB for their care of Eric.
Eric was a true gentleman in every way, a man of integrity and warmth with a wonderful sense of humour. He will be greatly missed.
The family will receive visitors at Carnell’s Funeral Home on Sunday, November 24th from 2PM – 7PM.
The funeral will be held at St. Andrew’s (“The Kirk”) Presbyterian Church on Monday, November 25th, at 11AM. Interment to follow at Kenmount Road Anglican Cemetery.
Flowers graciously accepted. Donations in Eric’s name may be made to the Autism Society of Newfoundland and Labrador or SPCA St. John’s for their “Way Home Campaign” to build a new the SPCA.

Sad to hear of Eric’s passing. While I had not seen him since he retired from DFO, knew him well and talked to regularly at work. Great guy, true gentleman. Many will also remember him for his pursuit of ticket sakes for the Progress Club. Back in the 90’s, I actually won a painting. Condolences to his family.
The Pitt family are very sorry to hear of Eric’s illness and death. Neighbours of over 50 years and now three generations. Please accept our sincere condolences.
Though we had not seen Eric in a long time, he was a good friend to both of us back in the ’80s/ Graham and Lynn Mowbray
Shocked and saddened to hear of Eric’s passing. No nicer man ever walked the face of the earth! I don’t think I ever saw him without a big smile on his face and that, of course, is how I will always remember him! Our sincere sympathy to the family.

Hugh, saddened to learn of Eric’s passing. Condolences to all. Fond memories of school days, neighbourhood shenanigans, summer evenings at the ballpark and hanging out in the Square. Was glad I got to see him when I was home in 2018. Rest easy, Harve.
A friendly neighbour is gone, to my sorrow. I have lived on Chestnut Place for fifty years, and Harveys were across the street always. “Young Eric” was part of the family,, and I am sorry that the connection is ended. I did not know of his illness, the reason why he had disappeared. My sympathy is extended to the family, and to his many friends.
Hugh, Peggy and family, I’m very sad to hear of Eric’ passing.
I think fondly of the days on Chestnut Pl. back when Eric had his big green Ramcharger. We as the neighborhood kids would “help” him when he was tinkering with it. We were definitely more hindrance than help. We would pester him all the time for rides in it. We even got the scattered ride to MacPherson in it and felt like the coolest kids around..
In recent times I would see him when we were both by the houses. He was always in good form..
I will miss the smile, wave and chat.
My condolences to Eric’s family. Eric was a very pleasant co-worker at DFO and a fine gentleman. Gone too soon. May he rest in peace.
