Adam Kavanagh

January 29, 1989 to September 16, 2025

Obituary

It is with broken hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Adam Kavanagh, aged 36 years, on September 16th, 2025. Born January 29, 1989, he was a beloved son, brother, uncle, and friend.

Adam was the proud owner and creative spirit behind Newfoundland Canvas, where he poured his energy and passion into framing and preserving what mattered most to others. From treasured artwork and jerseys to books, medals, Pokémon cards, dolls, cross-stitch, dried flowers, and even dinosaur teeth, he treated every piece with the care and reverence it deserved. His staff were more than just staff, they were family, and his store became a gathering place filled with laughter, stories, and love.

He leaves to mourn his parents, Tom and Kelly Kavanagh; his sister, Samantha Kelly (Adam); and his cherished niece and nephew, Iselin and Grey, who brought endless joy to the remaining time in his life. He will also be deeply missed by his many friends, extended family, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Adam was known for his humor, his kindness, and his boundless heart. To know him was to love him, and his absence leaves an ache that cannot be filled. Yet his spirit will live on in every memory, every framed keepsake, and every person whose life he touched.

So sorry for your loss, Tommy, Kelly, Alice, and all the rest of you. Adam was up the lane when our boys were little more than toddlers. From pumpkins after Halloween, Adam instilled in my son the desire to make money, which resulted in 5 cent tags taped on many things, including used socks.
Love you all ❤️
Blaine

I am Adam’s second cousin. I am the oldest son of the oldest man of the third generation of the Calvert Kavanagh’s (Mart Kavanagh, 1918-1985).. I met Adam, briefly, at his darling Grandmother Alice’s house in 2016, after returning home after 45 years away. Other than that, I was not acquainted with him.

After his recent sad passing, I did my research and I got to know the greatness of this man. He was loved by many. He had great business talent. And he possessed great artistic talent, recognized and celebrated. Like some of our other beloved former kin, he suffered, flew to great heights, was beloved, and embraced the sun, but was meant to go on. to other places in the spiritual universe. I read many tributes from those who loved him. I was deeply moved. As I write this, in my mind I hear the bagpipes…playing “Going Home”. Amen.

Tom and Family

Please accept my sympathy upon Adam’s passing. I am so very sorry for your loss.

Heidi

Tom and family. I was so sorry to hear of Adam’s passing. I am sure he will be missed. Take care.

So sorry for your loss! Thoughts and prayers are with you at this sad time!

My condolences to Adam’s family and friends. I first met Adam when he had the store on Cashin Ave. At the time I was getting back into photography as a personal interest. I remember how friendly and helpful he was. He was generous in sharing advice and tips on photography, printing and framing. I’m even more impressed now that I realize how young he was at the time. He made me feel like I was a big and important customer, when in fact I wasn’t. I was just a person who enjoyed photography and appreciated his help. Over the years I’ve told people if they want a special photo printed perfectly, then go to NL Canvas. The business was a reflection of his talent and drive. I’m sure he left many great memories for family and friends. Please cherish them. Rest easy Adam.

Tom, Kelly, and Samantha,
I am so sorry to hear of the loss of Adam who was such creative talent. My heart breaks for you all. To lose a family member so young is devastating. My thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time. Adam inspired so many and he created a creative space for artists to shine. Adam’s light shines in you – his family – and all who loved him. May his heavenly light bring you strength as you learn to navigate life without his earthly presence. May the wonderful memories of Adam and the joy he brought to others bring you some comfort. God bless you all.

Kelly Tommy and Samantha and family, I am so sorry for your loss. There are no words to help alleviate your grief right now. Let your family and friends help and lean on them in the months ahead. Hugs to you. My heart is with you.

Condolences to you Kelly, Tommy and Sammy. Adam was a tremendous person with more drive and ambition than most. Smart, talented and successful – someone for a family and his community to be very proud of. I’m very sorry for your loss.

Was so very sorry to hear the sad news of Adam’s passing. He was a born entrepreneur and started at a very young age, excelling at whatever he took on.. I worked with Adam in Ferryland, availed of his business services, and ran into him at various times over the years. He always stopped for a chat and was always so upbeat and friendly. Thinking of you all – he touched many people in a positive way and I hope that thought comforts you in some small way.

Kelly & Tommy,
We are so, so sorry to hear of Adam’s passing. Our hearts are with you. Thinking of all of your family as we send our love and condolences.

Bev & Charlie Gearin

JUST FOUND OUT THAT ADAM HAS PASSED. MY HEART IS BROKEN AS I TRY TO LET IT SINK IN FOR THE LOSS OF SUCH A YOUNG MAN.. STAY STRONG AS A FAMILY. GOD WILL SHOW YOU THE WAY AND BE BESIDE YOU EVERY STEP OF THE WAY. I LOVE YOU ALL AND PLEASE TAKE CARE. AUNT BARBARA.

Tommy, Kelly and Sammy. My Condolences on the loss of Adam.

2006 , 2008, 2015 and on, it did not matter where we met we always picked up where we left off. Adam was one of the softest souls. Dear Adam, may your light continue to be the light in the lighthouse needed to guide your family and friends through the dark days to come. You my friend were truly social. May you be at peace, rest my friend rest. I will remember you.

“you’re in the arms of the angel, may you find some comfort here.”

When I started out on my entrepreneur journey Adam’ was doing the same. When my business failed and I got a steady job, I took all of my travel prints and art to NL Canvas. To say Adam and his service went above and beyond is not even close to how big of a personality and love for his craft he had.

Very sad to think of a lovely talent gone too soon. My condolences to all.

Kelly, Tommy and Sammy. It was heartbreaking to hear of Adam’s passing. We have lost such an incredible human being! Even when in school, Adam was wise beyond his years. I will treasure the memories of my interactions with Adam as a young man. He was brilliant!
May his gentle soul rest in peace!

Kelly ,Tom,Sammy,Aunt Chris and families. So sorry for your loss,my heart is broken. Praying you’ll be conforted with precious memories & God’s presence to care for you in your loss. Our deepest condolences, sorry we cannot be with you at this time. Our prayers are with you all. 🙏 ❤️. Rick &Winnie (cousin)Canning

Rest in peace, my dear friend. Life won’t be the same without your laughter, your kindness, and the way you made everything brighter just by being there. I’ll carry our memories with me always, and I hope you’ve found peace where pain can’t reach you anymore ❤️

Sammy, Kelly, Tommy and all of Adam’s family, I am heartbroken for your loss. Adam was such a brilliant and supportive person I remember him drilling math equations into my head, he would be just as excited as me to see a passing mark way back in high school days. Knowing he successfully started his own business at what he always loved to do made supporting Newfoundland Canvas an easy choice. Thinking of you all in the days ahead.

Kelly, Tommy and Sammy condolences on your loss. Adam was such a smart man and always was. Treasure your memories .

Sending thoughts and prayers to Adam’s family and friends. Adam was a kind and beautiful soul and he will be missed by many for his compassion, warmth and humour. Adam was a rare gem and his loss is immeasurable. I hope you find comfort in your memories and peace in your heart in the days ahead.

Kelly, Tommy and Sammy, you know how much I loved Adam. Whenever I visited his shop or met him somewhere in town he always seemed so happy to see me and to catch up on the Calvert news. I have a sweet suncatcher of St. Patrick that he gave me, one of his artistic creations. Adam had so many talents; he could turn a simple black and white photo into a masterpiece. The comments on this site are testimonies to the full caring life he led. I hope Iselin and Grey remember their fun-loving uncle and that they will inherit even a few of his many God-given gifts. I am only down on The Point if you need anything..

Dear Tommy, Kelly, Samantha, and family,

I was so deeply saddened to hear of Adam’s passing. As a young man from Calvert, he gave so much of himself to the school and community, and it was clear even then that he had the drive, skills, and determination to build a successful career and life. Everyone who knew him has felt proud of what he accomplished and the way he carried himself.

It is heartbreaking to lose someone so young. The tributes speak volumes about how loved, respected, and admired Adam was by all who crossed his path. Please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers during this painful time, and I hope the memories of his kindness and spirit bring you some comfort in the days ahead.

With deepest sympathy,
Scott Walsh

I’m sorry

Tom, Kelly , Sammi and family, my deepest condolences .

Tom, Kelly, Samantha, Adam’s extended family and friends: There are no words. Adam was such a force: even at a very young age his energy and talent knew no bounds, as anyone who crossed his path can attest. And it is obvious that he carried that passion and enthusiasm into his professional life.. It was also obvious that he would be an entrepreneur. I think he was creating business plans in Grade 7!! I will always appreciate everything he did for me at Baltimore School. He was my right-hand man. He took care of all the music for the school dances and Spirit week activities; he willingly offered tech support when asked(he made everything look so easy); and he was a dedicated participate in the Duke of Edinburgh program. I will remember him fondly. My thoughts and prayers are with you as you grieve your loss. May he Rest in Peace.

Tommy, Kelly, Sammy, and all of Adam’s loved ones:
I was so deeply saddened to hear of Adam’s passing. I’ll always remember Adam for his sense of humor, kindness, and his ability to always be himself. Adam was such a consistent presence when we were growing up; we spent so many mornings hanging out by our lockers, eating lunch in the library, and our countless adventures with the Duke of Edinburgh program. Adam was always willing to lend a hand to help where he could and literally came to my rescue when I needed a giant poster printed for the last project of my degree. I asked him on minimal notice, and he jumped in without hesitation. That small example truly speaks to who Adam was a person. I cannot imagine the unfathomable loss you are all feeling right now. Adam has left so many memories in the hearts of all the lives he touched, and I hope that can provide you all with some comfort as you navigate this unthinkable time.

Kelly ,Tommy and family ,so sorry for your loss we are so sorry to hear of the sad news ,May your son rest in peace.

I worked with Adam when we were both attending MUN, he was a joy to be around. It was always exiting to be on the same shift as him because his energy and positive attitude was always so infectious. I am deeply sorry to hear this. My sincere condolences to his Friends and family.

Thinking of you all at this sad time. I have many fond memories of Adam as a student. Caring thoughts are with you now & always.. A donation has been made in Adam”s Memory. Jean & Jerome White

Deepest condolences to Adams family and friends.

RIP Adam, my old friend and classmate.. I remember being on the school bus sitting with you and being at your house on your computer or out playing in the woods. Good memories. Anytime someone would mention Newfoundland Canvas, I’d be sure to tell them that I went to school with the owner.

I met Adam for the first time years ago when Newfoundland Canvas was downtown, I think on Cathedral Street. I was using a groupon to get a canvas done of a special photo. He was warm and engaging and I was so impressed with him that I only ever went to Newfoundland Canvas afterwards. He would offer advice and suggestions and had such a talent for his work. Sending sincere condolences to Adam’s loved ones at this sad time. May he rest in peace.

My sincere condolences to all Adam’s immediate family. I’m sure you know this but you have lost a very special person and I’m so sorry for your loss. Everyone Adam interacted with was rewarded with nothing but natural smiles, kindness and help.
Hearing this news a couple of days ago had me in disbelief and left me without words. To be honest, I’m still processing Adam not being here.
Adam reached out to me over 10 years ago to see if I would be interested in working together. His business was at the Cashin Avenue location at the time and after our first meeting, we hit it off. Finding out our families were virtually neighbours on the southern shore was a bonus. We both exchanged our business backgrounds, experiences and offered each other tips. We collaborated on how the new developments he was working on delivered for his customers. We worked on fixing equipment when he tried a new machine for the first time and even ended up moving his shop from that location to Elizabeth Avenue. It was easy to see after that move that Adam had his business model in full swing and dressed for success. In our most recent conversation this year, Adam reflected back to the early days and once again wanted to share new developments that he was working on. We agreed to have coffee so he could test some of those on me but we regretfully did not get to do that. Adam was a great friend and an inspiration.

We are so sorry for your loss. Sincere sympathies to all the family. May all your cherished memories help you through this very difficult time. RIP Adam

Our sincere condolences to Adam’s family and coworkers at Nl Canvas. I’ve been dealing with Adam since he opened Nl Canvas. He always had time for a chat and a joke. He was very knowledgeable and free with his advice. Adam will certainly be missed. RIP Adam.

Sending sincere condolences to Adam’s family his co workers , friends and everyone who had the opportunity to meet him. Adam was my go to for printing since he started on Cathedral St. He was always eager to offer advice and a warm smile. Walking into Newfoundland Canvas will never be the same 💔

I sit here in disbelief. I met Adam on Cathedral Street, joined him on Cashin Avenue and followed him to Elizabeth Avenue. I always had a quiet admiration for his business mind and abilities, his willingness to take risks and to try new things, and his dedication to his work. I’ll always have fond memories of my days there and of him.

I am so sorry to hear the passing of Adam. When I was in the photography business myself, I would call upon Newfoundland Canvas many times. Adam would always greet you with a big smile and hello and he would serve you to the fullest.

Rest in peace Adam

I am so devastated to hear of Adam’s passing. I coached him in Jr basketball. My favourite memory of him was when he was having a really good game. I put him in on the final last strong line. He said , I can’t do it. I said. Funny you have been playing awesome on your two shifts. You deserve to be on that last line. Every kid on that team cheered him on. He played Amazing. Rest Easy Adam

Dear Tom, Kelly, and Sam — my deepest condolences to you. I was Adam’s religion teacher in grade 8. I was new to the school, and it was a tough adjustment. Adam was a shining light for me. I can still see exactly where he sat in class. His humour and his kindness helped me more than he could ever know. And he wasn’t shy to challenge me with questions that really made me think! I became a better teacher because of him. Adam will live in my memories always. Wishing you all peace and strength.

Tommy, Kelly and family….thinking of you all today as you experience this profound loss of your beloved son and brother.
When you look up at the night sky, the brightest star will most definitely be Adam. He accomplished more in his short 36 years than most people accomplish in three lifetimes. You have so much good to remember and so much to feel proud of. Take care of each other. Sending hugs.

To all who love Adam,
We knew your Adam only from being customers of Newfoundland Canvas. He was a delight.
The last time we were there, Adam stopped what he was doing to help us. He taught and we learned. He teased and we bickered. We laughed the whole time we were there and we hugged before we left.
We are so sorry for your loss.

I am so sadden to hear of Adam’s passing. I will remember him for his kind heart, amazing intellect, and great sense of humour. In business, we partnered on many things, and always supported each other in that capacity. I will miss his smile and great conversations. My thoughts are with his entire family. Rest easy my friend.

Sincere condolences to Adam’s family. I first met Adam when he was on Cashin Ave and had dealt with him and then to his newer location and staff in Stavanger. It was great to see him succeed and always a pleasure to deal with. Gone too soon.

Our Deepest Condolences To All
Of Adams Family , May He RIP in the loving Arms of Jesus !!!!!! Cathy and Francis Armstrong

My sincerest condolences to Adam’s family and friends. I met Adam at Forum for Young Canadians when we were both in high school, and later asked him to go to my grad with me. Adam was the sweetest person – he kindly agreed to go to the grad of a girl he barely knew so that I wouldn’t have to go alone. He brought me a corsage and even got photos with my family – very much a gentleman even as someone so young. Our paths haven’t crossed much in the years since, but I always admired his ambition and drive in building Newfoundland Canvas. This is such a devastating loss for our community and our province – he touched many lives and will be dearly missed.

My sincerest condolences to the Kavanagh family.

To Adam’s family and friends, I was very saddened to hear of Adam’s passing. I first met Adam just when Newfoundland Canvas was in the dream stage. As an owner of a frameshop, Adam picked my brain on everything a framer needed to be the best in the industry. I quickly learned that Adam was more than a dreamer, he was someone who made the impossible possible.

Over the last decade plus, we became friends. Often, in the middle of the night, I would get a text from him about his latest idea or a picture of a purchase of the newest, sleekest tool that would push the boundaries of framing or printing.. He was always reaching for the moon and surpassing all expectations.

When it came to my own business, Adam was a sounding board for me. I would tell him my crazy idea and he would encourage me to shoot for the stars. Even though we were supposed to be competitors, we were more about helping each other be the best at our craft. How many times did I hear him he say “A rising tide floats all boats.” That saying sums up Adam very well, he believed in what helped one, could help all around him.

Well my friend, I hope you are at peace, that you are pushing the boundaries of every dream you have and that you are helping those around you make their dreams a reality.

Rest easy my friend, you are missed by so many.

So sad to hear about Adam’s passing. I met Adam in 2009 when he was the photographer for mom and dad’s 50th wedding anniversary. He was so kind and funny. He was talented and did a fabulous job. I thought at the time what a great guy. This is such a loss to his family, friends and all the people he touched along the way. May God bless and guide his family as they go through the loss of their Adam. Life can be so beautiful and so difficult at the same time. May all the beautiful times that you shared together shine in your hearts. Always think of Adam as a special light in your lives that left too soon. May his spiritual light be with you now always. ⭐️🌹🙏❤️ Patricia Murphy (Walsh)
