It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Alejandro V. Ortiz, better known as “Alex,” who departed this life on September 16, 2025, at the age of 61, in St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada.
Born on November 17, 1964, in Metro Manila, Philippines, Alex lived a life marked by quiet strength, generosity, and unwavering dedication to his loved ones. A devoted husband, father, brother, uncle, and friend, Alex’s presence was a steady anchor in the lives of those fortunate enough to know him.
Alex is lovingly remembered by his wife, Catherine Ortiz, and his beloved daughter, Alyzza G. Ortiz. He is preceded in death by his first wife, Reina Joy G. Ortiz, whose memory remained closest to his heart.
He is also mourned and celebrated by his siblings: Ma. Nenuca O. Cruz, Georgina V. Ortiz, Roberto V. Ortiz, Bernadette V. Ortiz, and Francis Oliver Ortiz, and lovingly remembered by the families of his late brothers, Bernardo V. Ortiz Jr. and Valentino V. Ortiz.
A man of quiet dignity, Alex was a simple philanthropist at heart — never boastful, always generous, and deeply loyal. He was known for his sharp mind, reliability as a workmate, and his passion for doing things well. Always seen with his clean, sleek brushed-up hair, Alex was the embodiment of quiet confidence and understated style.
In his free time, Alex enjoyed mountain biking, watching TV and movies at home, and sharing quiet moments over a drink with loved ones. Home was his sanctuary, and he cherished simple joys with those closest to him, especially his daughter, Alyzza.
Alex touched many lives with his compassion, humility, and unwavering support. He leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and strength that will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
Funeral arrangements will be shared with family and friends in the coming days.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you honor Alex’s memory by spending time with those you love, lending a hand to someone in need, or simply enjoying a quiet evening — just as Alex would have liked.
Mass of Christian Burial will take place from the Carnell Memorial Chapel on Friday, September 19th, 2025 at 1:00 pm.

I have only had the pleasure of working with Alex for the last four years and can honestly say he was one of a kind, simply an honour and pleasure to work with and know. His smile, laugh, gentleness, professionalism , work ethic, his hair, just to name a few, doesn’t go unnoticed. Another great human taken way too soon. Rest easy Alex, you will be missed

I’ve worked with Alex since the start of my career at eastern health about 8 years ago, Alex had a quiet demeanour but always up for a joke, prank or dance. He was a very tidy person over his work and himself, always dressed to impress. We will miss catching your eye looking over in cart makeup for us to yell out “good job Alex!!” And that smile and laugh in return. The little gestures will be missed and work won’t be the same without you there, rest in paradise my friend.
