Obituary

“Perhaps they are not stars in the sky, but rather openings where our loved ones shine down to let us know they are happy” – Inuit mythology

It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the loss of Angela Cantwell-Peters, who passed away peacefully in Windsor, ON on September 9, 2016 at 86 years of age. Beloved mother of Michele (Cantwell) Stewart (Tim). Cherished Nana of Laura and Matthew Andrews and Emma Stewart. Predeceased (2009) by her devoted husband of 27 years, Stuart Peters, and Thomas Cantwell (1977), loving husband of 24 years. Daughter of the late Peter and Madeline Withers. Dear sister of Paul (late Margaret Clouter) Withers, Peter (Patricia) Withers, Carmel (Cyril) Fleming, late Ray Withers, Vincent (Delores) Withers, late Kay Kiss, Madeline (Doug) Greeley, late James (late Cathy) Withers. Will be sadly missed by a large number of nieces, nephews, and friends.

Angela was a dynamic, intelligent and successful professional woman who was a pioneer in breaking through the corporate “glass ceiling” in Canada. From humble beginnings in the secretarial pool at Bowring Brothers in St. John’s, NL, Angela rose to the top of the corporate ladder. When recalling special moments from her career, however, Angela rarely cited her title as Bowring’s President and CEO, nor her many Board positions, or her seat on the Prime Minister’s special commission. Rather, she treasured the memory of thoughtful co-workers who brought her a loaf of bread, and those who continued to phone her once a year or send a Christmas card. These were the special people that made her career most rewarding and fulfilling.

As the oldest of nine siblings, Angela took on the role of second mother early in her life, providing love and caring for each of her brothers and sisters in a devoted and loyal way. She was an anchor in the Wither’s family, and her loss will be felt deeply.

Angela adored each of her grandchildren, and in her later years was so happy to be near them in Windsor. She treasured opportunities to watch them in a school play or dance recital, and together they enjoyed many special family trips. In Angela’s eyes, though, no star shone more brightly than her precious Emma, whom she loved “to the moon and back”.

But the most important person in Angela’s life was always her daughter, Michele. Her “Mickey Mouse” was Angela’s pride and joy, and she cherished their time together – particularly special moments after a long day at work or when she returned from a business trip. Angela’s love for her only child knew no bounds, and she left an indelible mark on Michele’s life in innumerable ways — as a mother, a role model and later as a friend and confidante. The memories they created and the bond of love they shared will live on forever.

Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held on Sunday, September 18th at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Rd., from 3pm to 5pm and 7pm to 9pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Pius X on Monday, September 19th at 9:30am, with private family interment to follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Angela’s memory may be made to the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Centre or to the Eating Disorder Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Michelle; I was so story to read of your mother’s death. She was always such a lovely and elegant woman and she really did break ground from a career perspective. She was a successful businesswoman long before it was “in vogue” yet was always so self effacing about it all! My parents were very fond of your mom and always spoke so highly of her. I am sure the loss of your mother will leave a big gap in your life. I hadn’t realized she had moved to Windsor but it’s wonderful that you got to spend the last years together. That is a wonderful gift that I’m sure will leave you with many happy memories. Again, my deepest sympathies. Lisa Tucker Boulton

We wish to extend our prayers and sympathy on the recent passing of Angela. She made a significant contribution to the business community of Newfoundland and Labrador.

I had the privilege of being Angela’s neighbour after she moved to Windsor. She was a lovely, spirited woman and I always appreciated our little talks where she would give me great business and life advice. My sympathies to all of her family.

Angela and my mother Sarah Maher Murphy
were good friends for many years. My mother
and Angela’s mother were sisters.

I met Angela later in life and we kept in touch.
She was a brilliant woman and Derick Bowring
trained her to become CEO of Bowring long
before the glass ceiling was broken.

I found the Bowring book last year and treasure
it as a memory of Angela!

We sometimes live our entire lives without ever meeting some of our extended family members. Our Mom Sarah Murphy ( Maher) and Aunt Madeline Withers (Maher) were sisters. I have heard numerous stories throughout the years about your ( Angela) successes with your career from these two bragging sisters.God speed to your reward cousin Angela!
