It is with sadness that we announce that Anita Newman, age 92, passed away peacefully at home on Feb 4, 2025.
Anita grew up in St. John’s, with her parents (Beatrice and Hedley Snelgrove) and her three sisters.
She graduated from the Grace Hospital School of Nursing and in 1954 married William Newman, a loving marriage that would last 70 years.
They had 4 children, 4 grandchildren, and 1 great grandchild.
Anita loved spending time with her family, including many extended trips to Ontario to visit the grandkids.
Anita also loved going to ‘the country’ (their cabin on Grand Pond). She enjoyed gardening and watching the birds (which she made sure were well fed). She also enjoyed the ‘happy hour’ tradition, sharing stories and laughter with her Grand Pond friends.
Anita was loving, kind, and wise and will be lovingly remembered and missed by her family and friends.
She leaves to mourn, husband Bill,
Children Paul (Janet), Keith, Lisa (John), and Lori (Geoff), Grandchildren Lauren (Kiefer), Sam, Lucy & Kate, great granddaughter Hazel, and sisters June, Lorna and Beth.
She was predeceased by her parents Edmund, Beatrice and Hedley, sister Sonia and brothers in law George, Fred and Stan.
Cremation has taken place.
A visitation to celebrate Anita will be held at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Rd. from 2 – 4 pm. Tuesday, Feb 18th.

Aunt Anita (always Aunt ‘Neet’ to us) was a very special person. I will forever cherish her love, amazing spirit, coolest style …. And the ability to always relate to us ‘kids’ as equals!! She was truly one of a kind….. and I hope she’s enjoying happy hour with Mom sipping on manhattans somewhere beyond this life.
