It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Arlene Graham (nee Mitchell) RN, age 82 years at St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital, Tuesday, October 18th, 2022.

Predeceased by her parents, Tracy and Catherine and husband John Melville Graham (Mel).

Leaving to mourn is her brother Bill Mitchell (Vivian) and nephew Blaine, of New Mexico, USA

Her stepchildren Moire (Gordon) Neary and Ian (Geri) Graham. Five grandchildren Mark Neary (Melanie), Allison Neary (Gord), John Graham (Amy), Andrea Brophy (Scott) and Ryan Graham (Tori). Eight great grandchildren, Isla, Jack and Sarah Graham, Sicily, Scottie Jane, Cullen, Maryann Brophy and Lou Graham.

Arlene was born Brooklyn, New York and raised in Mystic, Connecticut. She eventually moved to Palm Harbour Florida, where she met Mel. Arlene moved to Newfoundland in 1991 and married the love of her life. She soon realized that Newfoundland would become her special home. Her early years on the island, she spent many summer days with her grandchildren and Poppie, fishing and picking blueberries. Her creativity was always on display with pints of fresh blueberries and her delicious desserts.

Arlene was an incredible cook and took every opportunity to share her gift with family and dear friends. She introduced her Newfoundland family to many traditions, but most memorable is the family dinners for traditional American Thanksgiving. The food was always flawless, and the turkey dressing was always a topic of conversation (the sage versus the savory). Christmas was an annual highlight in the family calendar, as Arlene was a staple in the eyes of her grandchildren. She had a special way connecting with her Newfoundland family and had a patient and loving influence on all her grandchildren.

She spent her life surrounded with family that loved her deeply. We are all so grateful for all our wonderful memories of our dear Arlene, or as our great-grandchildren would call her, “GG”.

Arlene also made many friends through her involvement at St. Andrews Church and the Mount Pearl Library Board. She was blessed to have some great friends on Halloran Place, especially Mr. Cal Dibbon.

Special thank you to her home-care worker Marie Lewis for her care of Arlene in recent times.

Also, a very special thank you from our family to Dr. Sheila McGrath. Dr. McGrath, your many years of care for both Poppie and Arlene will never be forgotten.

Cremation has taken place at Carnell’s Funeral Home. The family will be receiving visitors from 12-1 p.m. prior to service. A celebration of life will occur on Saturday, November 5, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. from the Carnell Memorial Chapel. Interment to follow in the Field of Honor at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to St. Andrews Presbyterian Church or a charity of your choice.

Sending so much love to the entire Graham family. Arlene is part of so many of my childhood memories and she always had the warmest presence. She gave so much love to Poppy Graham and finally, they’ve reunited. Thinking of you all. Xoxo

Moire, Gordon and Family AND Ian, Geri and Family:
Our deepest sympathies are with you for the loss of Arlene. She will be forever in our hearts and memories. Arlene was a very unique person and a true friend who was very thoughtful, kind and generous. Her Thanksgiving dinners were awesome, and we were so proud to have been included with her family. We will certainly miss our weekly outings to dinner and our enjoyable card games. Death is the most certain of all that can happen to anyone. Yet we can’t help feeling sad when someone close to us is taken. Thinking about all you guys during this difficult time. Love John and Ruby
